Y Cymry a’u helyntion yn Virginia o’r dyddiau cynharaf hyd ddiwedd y rhyfel cartref” (The Welsh in Virginia and their trials from the earliest days until the end of the Civil War),
by D. Eirug Davies is published by Cymdeithas Lyfrau Ceredigion Gyf, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion; ISBN 978-1-84512-084-9.

Book review by Philip Davies published in the January 2010 edition of NINNAU, The North American Welsh Newspaper(R) Incorporating Y DRYCHTM, relates that accounts of Welsh American history do not give much attention to the Welsh in Virginia but that this latest addition to the collection of historical writings by Dr. Davies will change that in many ways. Review by Philip Davies, who was a drug industry scientist, announced that Dr. Davies work reveals the first British settlement in Virginia began in 1607, that between 1654 and 1686 ten thousand set sale from Bristol, England to Virginia; 4,000 of them were Welsh. And further, that a significant proportion of the population of Henrico County was Welsh; by 1704, seventeen percent had identified themselves as being Welsh.

Dr. Davies book will be of great interest to family history researchers having heritage through Virginia. The work is published in the Welsh language and Philip Davies’ review encourages Dr. Eirug Davies to offer translation of it (in English) enabling a larger readership.

Dr. Eirug Davies has published many books and articles of interest to family history researchers including “Y Cymry ac aur Colorado” (published in the Welsh language) and he has provided presentations of his research about the “Welsh in the American West”, “The Welsh Language in Vermont’s Slate Belt” and of the Welsh in Coal Creek, Tennessee to name but a few. An Associate Member of Harvard’s Celtic Department where he has conducted many seminars, Dr. Davies was involved in microelectronics research with the United States Air Force and has published extensively on his work and interacted with many of the leading figures responsible for today’s electronic industry. His interests in Welsh history were developed from an interest in Welsh literature produced in the United States.
