NOTE: Mail addresses posted on USGenWeb pages are harvested by BULK EMAIL marketing groups. They have programs that read the pages and search the pages for everything with the form "mailto: email@example.com. Within days of adding your email name, you begin to get junk mail: "Hi There!", "Good Timing", "Free Business Opportunity", and you can probably add many to this list.
You can read the mail, delete them or do something about them. Most reputable Internet Service Providers (ISP) have an "Acceptable Use" agreement that prohibits Bulk emailing. If you notify the ISP hosting the account, they will typically disable the email account. If I get adult content email, I will even send a request to their hosting address.
All email has a SENDER address, a REPLY TO address and a third REMOVE address embedded at the end of the email. They will be advertising information on a FOURTH site. Bulk mailers try to protect their important resource (the web site where their data is located) and will sacrifice the SENDER address because they will just go get another FREE email address. Free email addresses are wonderful. I love them and so do bulk mailers.
Put your email address online and you will begin to get daily doses of JUNK EMAIL. If you want to dig into the header and take some action against them, you can. It is not too hard.
A typical header will look like the actual one sent to me:
<rest of junk>
