of the Virginia Peninsula in York County, Virginia which became known as Camp Peary, initially
for use as a Seabee training base. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) extended a spur
track from its Richmond-Newport News main line tracks to the site from nearby Williamsburg and
established Magruder Station near the former unincorporated town of Magruder. There is

I picked up a small bible that belonged to a soldier in WWII. It was the type that was given out to
all the military people then. I tried and tried to locate family, thinking they might like to have it. I
think I did locate a death record for him - can't remember now because it's been a while ago. I
finally took it to the little military museum in the same mall as our library and gave it to Sam
Jones. He put it in their collection.

I was one of the lucky ones who were able to see MR. HOPE and his USO show. I was on my
last two months in Chu Lai (I rotated home in early Feb 69) when this great man blessed and
honored us with his 68 Christmas show. I can remember MS. Ann Margaret, Mr. Rosie Greer,
Miss. World (Miss Australia), MR. Jerry Colona as if it was just yesterday. The impression that he
made not only on me; but upon the other thousands of my brother Marines, and our other
brothers and sisters in uniform is indescribable. We, not only as a nation, but as a whole world on
July 26 2003 lost a man of great stature, comedy, and humanity. I have a picture from my local
paper hanging up in my office, with MR. HOPE with angels wings standing in front of a large
group of servicemen saying; " When I got up here, I told Saint Peter that I didn't have any idea
how to spend eternity...He said Just wing it...." "But, seriously, it's really great to be with all of
you terrific guys and gals again...."

John Kenneth Thornton died 4 January 1997, his obituary was in the Columbian on 5 January,
1997. It says he died at the Portland VA. Served in the Coast guard. Worked at Alcoa for 30
years. Survived by wife, Emma; 3 daughters: Joan Royston, Dorothy Johnson, and Barbara
Sorenson all of Vancouver. 4 Grandchildren. Buried at Park Hill Cemetery.

The US Public records Index lists a number of Munger's living in Clark County, there were also a
number that died in Clark County perhaps a search of our obits might give some clues.
This name struck a cored with me as my family knew some Munger's when we lived in the Walnut
Grove Area, I think my brother ran around with some of them, but I was only 4 to 5 years old so
do not remember for sure.
The Public records index has these munger's and more.

The Munger Book does have a Jerome Munger, no birth date or place but could guess around
1820. He was the son of Harmon Munger, born Bethlem CT Aug 2 1794, died Hastings,
Michigan in 1859. M Sophia Knapp.
Harmon was the son of Orange Munger b Bethlem CT about 1769-70, D Oswego NY; son of
Lewis (our common ancestor)born East parish of Guilford CT 1729, d Bethlem CT 1801; son of
Johnathan, son of John, son of Nicholas Munger the 1st Munger in America. The Munger book
talks about all of these Mungers and lists their children, marriages, etc. There is no further info on
Jerome but there is on one of his sisters, Lucy.
It would be worth your while to get a Munger Book based on this info because there is far too
much to send you via e-mail. There is an address posted in another message re Munger Book.

The information that I have located on Volney starts with the 1910 Census for Clark County,
Washington, where he is listed with his father, Albert M. Munger, 69, born Ohio. His mother is
Abbie, 57, born N.J. He has a sister Stella, 27, born Wa., a brother Albert, 23, born Oregon, and
a brother Archie, 19, born Oregon. Last is Volney, listed as Clifford, 12, born Washington.
The 1920 Census shows him again in Clark County with his mother as head of household. His
father apparently had died during the previous 10 years. His mother is listed as Abbie K. Munger,
68, b. NJ. Also in the household are Archie K, 28, and Volney C, 21.
Stella is listed as living on W. 28th St. in Vancouver in 1940, and V. Clifford, with wife Helen C.,
are listed as living on NE 3rd Pl., Camas,in 1950. This information from the City Registry at
CCGS.
Volney's Passport lists him as living at 1425 NE 3rd Place,Camas, Wa., in 1949. The foreign
contact person is listed as a Brice Shafer, Domenico Chiodo 28, Genoa, Italy. Familysearch.org
has a file on Volney, and lists his SS# as 534-10-6836, born 31 Jan 1898, died 9 Sep 1984,

father's death, and came across the passport for a Volney Clifford Munger, born 1898,
Washington State. The passport was issued in 1949, and at that time it appears that he lived in
Camas. My wife's father Arthur Kramer, of Clark County, Washington, married an Irene Lambert
in Oceano, California in about 1987. Volney Clifford Munger had been Irene's previous husband,
and died in the Oceano, California, area. Both Irene and Art has since died.
I have been attempting to find a descendent of Volney who is interested in Genealogy. I realize
that I could go down through the phone book and call the Munger's listed, and possibly located a
descendent. That does not indicate a genealogy interest, however. I checked the records at
CCGS, and could not locate any Munger researchers, or individuals researching the Munger line.
I did, however, come across a Dana Munger Kessler in one of the old chat Room records. She
was researching the Munger line, and mentioned the Volney line. I attempted to contact her
through the e-mail address that she used at that time, but it came back as no longer valid.
I am wondering if you have any way of contacting Dana? It seems as she would be the person
that would be most interested in the Passport, and would appreciate it the most. I would be
appreciative of any help that you could give me with this. As you can see, I do have e-mail
access, but will be away from home the last week of January.
