Pat: I sure will try. By the way, I had an exciting genealogical happening this week. You
know the Fleming line I have been chasing for about ten years now? Had a brick wall
that ended with my great grandfather and his second wife. This week I got a response
to an inquiry I made SIX years ago! His opening sentence was "I hope six years is not
too long"! Turns out the respondent was just given his GG Grandmother's papers,
which have letters from her to her children. His great great grandmother is my great
grandfather's second wife. He's just getting them lined out, but going to copy anything I
want from them. We're both very excited, because I probably have things he doesn't,
since he's a direct descendant of her (Ladora (Combs) Fleming nee Timmons. I am
hoping he will find a death certificate for my Great Grandfather William, which I have
been unable to get from either OK or MO. Neither can find one. If I get that lucky, I will
be able to move forward. If not, I will still just love having more on them as a couple,
and will be able to give him William's civil war information. Should be fun! I'm very
excited.

First, regarding the Florida Death index on Ancestry...
According to the notes on this database on ancestry.com records before 1917 are
spotty. Also, the notes at the bottom of the search page say that the index on
Ancestry.com covers 1936-1998 (even though it is titled 1877-1998):
Source Information:
Ancestry.com. Florida Death Index, 1877-1998 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA:
The Generations Network, Inc., 2004. Original data: State of Florida. Florida Death
Index, 1877-1998. Florida: Florida Department of Health, Office of Vital Records, 1998.
About Florida Death Index, 1877-1998
This index covers the death records in the State of Florida, USA, from 1936 to 1998.
Most records contain a name, race, death date, death place, gender, birth date, volume
number, and certificate number.
This index covers over 5 million deaths recorded in Florida from 1877-1998. Most
records contain:
•Name of deceased
•Death place (city and/or county)
•Death date
•Race
•Birth date
•Gender
•Certificate and/or volume number
This collection of records was digitized from microfiche provided by The Florida
Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics, P.O. Box 210, Jacksonville, Florida
32231-0042. It is important to use the information gathered from this index to obtain a
copy of the original record, as original records usually contain more information than do
their indexes. Information about how to order a copy of a death certificate is available
on The Florida Department of Health website.
The Bureau of Vital Statistics of the State Department of Health and Rehabilitative
Services, P.O. Box 210, Jacksonville, Florida 32231, has custody of birth and death
records filed from January 1917 to date.
Death records begin about 1877, but the first state law mandating registration of deaths
was passed in 1899, and records before 1917 are spotty. It is always wise to check with
city health departments. Some years ago, for example, the St. Augustine Health
Department deposited a number of "death certificates and burial permits" written on
scraps of paper, prescription blanks, etc., for the late 1870s and early 1880s with its
local historical society library.
Taken from Florida, Ancestry's Red Book by Lyn Scott and Gary Topping, edited by
Alice Eichholz. (Salt Lake City, UT: Ancestry Incorporated, 1992).

BRICKWALL PROJECT:
CCGS member Gene Kuechmann asks about this:
Stephen Lafayette Wilder supposedly drowned March 9, 1885, in the Indian River near
Titusville, Florida. The Wilder Book, Spring Grove Cemetery (Cincinnati, where he is
buried), and my mother (his great-niece) all agreed that is when, where, and how he
died. According to my mother, Stephen was boating with his sons when the boat
capsized. He told his sons to cling to the capsized boat while he swam for help. They
were rescued, but he drowned.
I asked someone to look for news items about it in Daytona, but never heard back. I
tried to look online for news items, couldn't find any. My cousin Barbara doesn't find
him in the "Florida Death Index, 1877-1998" on ancestry.com. He does not appear in
the index to local newspapers at the Hamilton County Library (he was from Cincinnati).
How do we confirm the date, location, and manner of his death?
Please click on the "log-out" button (lower right) before you leave.
