FROM: PatB on DATE-Nov 29, 2007 4:49:34 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: There were two interesting obits in the Columbian today - both for the same guy. In the one, apparently with info furnished by the wife (step mother to his own children), it mentioned her name and the names of his two step children. No mention of biological children or his siblings. In the other, the wife isn't mentioned but he is survived by four named children (another one is deceased and named); two sisters and seven grandchildren. Each obit has a picture of the guy. I went to school with his sister. The wife is having a funeral for him Saturday and the kids will have a memorial service for him the following Saturday. Rather strange but understandable. FROM: PatB on DATE-Nov 29, 2007 4:17:39 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Jim sent me this info that he had received. I thought you'd enjoy reading it: Subject: Arley Lewis Information I just got the information on Arley from the WA archives. I am just blown away by what was in it all. There were a couple more news items, there was a letter from Arley, to the Gov. explaining what happened & pleading for his life, letters from the Gov., the P.A., appeal from a minister and several signed petitions to try to save Arley's life. Arley claims the reason he confessed was because the P.A. told him there were three other men they were holding for the crime. Arley had one trial and one stay of execution all the while trying to reach family members (it named his brothers). But, they never heard from anybody. Those brothers could have saved Arley's life. This was just all so sad, it made me cry. One thing that the P.A. mentioned to the Gov. was how Arley seemed to never have any remorse and how he played the piano in the corridor of the court house after the trial. There is a plot number at the prison, number 299 where he is buried. I must let the prison know this. Thanks everyone for all of the help. It also says, "Daughter of Lois Gillette Kirwan." Lois Gillette Kirwin is buried at Elim - 1897-1994. Lois is also in the SS Death Index b. 2 Jun 1897, d. 12 Dec 1994 as Kirwan. I'm trying to find a correct surname for daughter Lorna Zoe. Or maybe she is a Zoe. Lorna Zoe stone: http://www.rootsweb.com/~waclacem/Elim/zoelorna.jpg Lois Kirwin/Kirwan stone: http://www.rootsweb.com/~waclacem/Elim/kirwinlg.jpg There is no SS record for Lorna Zoe. There is one with the correct dates for Lorraine VanCleave who died at Battle Ground. She's also listed as Lorraine Z. VanCleave in the WA death index. There is also info on a Lois Gillette who may or may not be the mother of this Lorna. Here's some info: (these dates fit!) South Dakota marriages: Lester S.
