Banff Scotland churchyard has
a George ELDER in bio for
"Smith and ELDER" publishing of
London. Could be a relative of his, too.
49) In memory of Adam Elder, who died June 21st, 1829,
aged 82, and of Ann, his wife, who died April 25th, 1821,
aged 69, also of George Elder, son of the above,
who died March 3, 1853, aged 60, and of Margaret, his wife, who
died January 27th, 1837, aged 36,
and of their son George Elder, who died August 2Ist, 1849, aged 21.
"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."*
*" Adam Elder, although a poor man, and labouring in his humble craft for his daily bread, had a
pride in giving his sons a fair education easily accessible at that time, as it still is, at our Banff
Academy.
Alexander, third son of Adam, thus prepared entered the establishment of the Messrs. Imlach,
carrying on various branches of book selling business in Banff. Remaining in their employment for
some ten years, and gaining a character for steadiness and capacity these gentlemen urged his
moving to London, and handed him over to a friend who had bought up, and succeeded to the
great
publishing and bookselling house of Vernor, Hood and Sharp.
Here our Banff man acquired a thorough knowledge of
London work and habits, and promotion was sought for in another house.
About the same period that Elder commenced London life, a youth of the name of Smith was
consigned to the tender mercies of the same party in town by the well-known bookseller in Elgin,
Mr. Isaac Forsyth.
Smith followed pretty much the same course as his Banff compeer;
and the two finally, united in opening a publishing house of their own in Fenchurch Street. . . . All
the world knows that Smith and Elder have for many years carried on one of the first Publishing
Establishments in the metropolis."
(Imlach's "Chronicles.")
Alexander Elder died in February, 1876, at the age of 86 years.
James Gordon Smith died in London in March, 1873.
He is said to have been also a native of Banff, and left Mr. Imlach's book shop in Low Street
Banff, about 1836. He aided in building up the firm of Messrs. Smith, Elder and Co., publishers,
Cornhill, and will long be remembered for the generosity and encouragement he showed to north
country men when they came to reside in London
[George Smith, Sr. and Jr. were publishers with Alexander Elder in London]

The info on a census record is only as accurate as the knowledge of the person giving the
information. My own great grandmother on one census record had her father's birth place as
England and her mother's as Ireland. Actually, the ancestors (grandparents maybe) of each of
them came from those countries.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF STAMFORD.
The first records of any movement towards organizing a
Presbyterian church in Stamford, are found among the records
of the Congregational church. After the communion service of
Jan. 2, 1853, in a church meeting, the following members of the
Congregational church called for letters of dismission from the
church, to constitute a Presbyterian church about to be formed.
Augustus R. Moen, Alexander Milne, George Elder, James
D. Haff, Luke Baker, Hiram Warner, James Robinson, John
Holmes, Mrs. Sophia A. Moen, Miss Cornelia A. Moen,
Hannah E. Elder, Mrs. Mary E. Haff, Mrs. Almira Baker,
Mrs. Sophia Warner, Miss Elizabeth M. Warner, Mrs. Georgette
A. Robinson, Mrs. Catherine Helmes.
Letters of dismission were voted to these members of the
church according to the rules of the church, Jan. 16, 1853.
During the next few weeks similar letters were given to the following
members of the Congregational church :
Wells R. Ritch, Mary Ann Sturges, Elizabeth Sturges, Mrs.
Amzi Ayres, Miss Matilda Moen, Mrs. Sarah A. Ritch, Miss
Sarah L. Ritch.
This church was organized Feb. 25, 1853 with twenty-six
members...

Up until this time, the kids had to be transported to another town for high school. Our daughter is
school nurse for both the elementary and high school and won't have to travel out-of-town any
longer for which she is thankful. She has her own little office in the new school for her four hours
a week job.

Oh Brrrr Charles! Our daughter said they are expecting some very cold weather and really not
looking forward to it at all. At least they will be all moved into their new school by tomorrow
night which is good planning. They will now have the high school in Coulee City and the teachers,
big kids and farmers (with trucks) were moving everything from the old school to the new one
today and tomorrow. That's really a community effort, isn't it?

**Note: The digital image of this item is available at
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/
It is indexed as S.A. Henslee, but looking at the image, the initials are clearly B.A.
It provides the mother's surname which didn't appear in the Brickwall Post.
Also note, the place and date of the marriage are on the wrong lines, but I transcribe them as they
were written.
There is an Adkins Metcalf family tree on Ancestry.com that includes a picture of Leannah
Metcalf's father: William Henry Metcalf - and goes back several generations on that line

BRICKWALL PROJECT:
Craig Souder is looking for more information regarding his wife's family. Her great grandmother
was Leah Marie Martin who married Emmet Alonzo Henslee. The parents of both of these
people were in Clark County and found in the census of 1860, 1870, 1880, 1883, 1885 and 1887.
The parents of Leah Martin were Antoine (Anton, Antone, Anthony) Martin and wife Marie
(Mary). The parents of Emmet were Merline Columbus Henslee and wife Leanah May.
Some information has been found for Craig in the Clark County Pioneers books for the Henslee
family. Nothing was found there on the Martins except the marriage of the daughter to Henslee.
Also, the tombstone picture from the Old City Cemetery where the Henslee parents are buried has
been sent to Craig. The Martins, including Leah and her husband Emmet were in the San
Francisco, CA area by 1900 census.
Any additional information about these families would be greatly appreciated.
