MESSAGE:
CATLETT, HANSON GEORGE (1808 ~ 1854) Hanson George Catlett was born in 1808 in
Hagerstown, Maryland to Grandison Catlett and Mary "Polly" Gassaway. Not much is known
about Hanson's childhood in Maryland, except that he had one sister, Mary, and three older
half-sisters. Apparently, Grandison Catlett had an adventuresome spirit and was not well liked by
Polly's father. When Hanson was less than 10 years old, his rich grandfather, Charles Gassaway,
died but did not include the Catlett children in his will like he did the half-sisters. While Hanson
was still a teenager, his father went to Kentucky, leaving his family in Maryland.
In 1832, Hanson married Eleanor Anne Bayne in Prince George's County, Maryland. It wasn't
long before he was looking for adventure, opportunity and maybe, just some "elbow room." The
letters that he wrote home showed how excited he was to go to Texas and how optimistic he was
about making some good land deals and bringing his family to Texas.
He sailed from New Orleans and wrote home for the first time from Brazoria, on October 24,
1836, seven days after arriving in Texas. The first letter stated, "My health is much better than it
has been for several years." Apparently, when Hanson left Maryland, he didn't know for sure if he
was going all of the way to Texas, because he wrote to Ellen, "In my last letter to you from
Orleans I informed you of my intention to come to Texas." He also mentions receiving her letters
"directed to Orleans and Natchus."

The following is an article from the Medical World A Journal of Universal. Found this online and
it really blew me away. My grandfather died in 1854 at a fairly young age in Texas, we don't
know of what. The Medical World A Journal Intelligence, taken from a New York newspaper
before August 19, 1854 when my great great grandfather, Hanson George Catlett died. This New
York newspaper must still exist. Just wondering if you have any resourses for any NY
Newspapers. The Journal was published in 1857.
Thanks,

Cancer: A Mr. H.G. Catlett relates the following dreadful case in a New York paper, of his own
condition, which was happily relieved. "The disease originated upon the cheek bone, near the
outer corner of my right eye, and continued to spread upon the bone before developing itself upon
the surface. Dr. Gilbert put me under treatment, at Memphis, on the 23rd September, 1852. The
raw surface was then larger than a dollar, but extended nearly over the entire side of my face upon
the bone. The doctor took out my eye, removed all the flesh and the entire surface of the cheek
and jaw-bone from my eyebrow to my gums; and from my ear to my nose, and the roof of my
mouth, two openings were made through into my nose; all of my jaw teeth, a part of the eyebrow,
and the entire socket bone of the eye, were removed, and all without the use of the knife. There
has been no appearance of disease since April last; and I have every hope and belief that it has
been completely eradicated. I have had examination made recently by eminent physicians and
surgeons, who could discover no appearance of remaining disease."

His father, Frank Cipra, was born in Zbirov, Bohemia, in October, 1839, grew up and married at
Teakov, and followed farming according to the intensive methods that prevailed in the old
country. When he came to the United States with his family in 1877, he located on the broad
prairies of Ellsworth County, Kansas, and homesteaded 160 acres in Palacky Township..."

HYACINTH
THIRTEEN miles northwest of Hays on the highest point of the divide between the Saline River
to the north and Big Creek to the south a little church rears its tower sixty feet into the blue sky.
The church is visible for many miles. This is St. John's Catholic Church of Hyacinth, in Buckeye
Township.
The movement to build this church was started by James Ross and John Miller. These men
circulated a subscription list, entering twenty-five names thereon. They presented this list to Rev.
Fr. Richard Dei, then pastor of Hays, in whose jurisdiction the territory to be formed into a new
parish was located. John O'laughlin donated a tract of twenty acres in the southwest corner of
Section Thirteen, Township Twelve, Range Nineteen, Ellis County, Kansas. On this tract the
church was erected. It is a frame building having the following dimensions: auditorium 6Ox32,
sanctuary, 20x18, sacristy 16x14; likewise a threeroom parsonage 16x28 was built.
The available funds at the commencement of the building was three hundred and fifty dollars. The
church building was completed in three months and was solemnly blessed November 29, 1906, by
the Right Rev. Bishop Cunningham of Concordia.
Twelve families constituted the entire membership, namely: James Ross, John Miller, Cornel
Stecklein, George Schmidt, Alex Geist, Adam Pfeifer, Michael Geist, Peter Schoenfeldt, John
O'laughlin, Andrew Pfeifer, Lawrence Maschka, and Alex Royer.

Nancy Elder Petersen and Patricia McKee Bauer, along with several regular visitors, will be
staffing the GenChat room beginning about 6:45 p.m. Thursday evening. We close the door about
9:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
We have visitors who will give you a willing helping hand with your genealogy brick walls. You
can enter questions or answers at any time but we hope you will be able to join us when we are
open for discussions.
BRICKWALL PROJECT:
Pat says, "This query comes from my newly-found cousin, Eon Maska, in California."
Eon reports, "What I really need now is the information for John Paul Maska b. 17 Dec 1870 in
Moravia (this is a state in present day Czechoslovakia, but in 1870 it was German occupied as a
result of the Franco-Prussian War) city unknown yet and his wife Katherine Staab b. Apr 1882 in
Catherine, Ellis, Kansas. John Paul Maska d. 1 Jun 1966 in Los Angeles, CA.
I want to find out about their descendants, which would include John James Maska's siblings and
their children. James B. Maska is the last child of John James and Helen June Maska living and he
has helped me a bunch so far with my father's side of the family. I also have two uncles left on my
mother's side too, but I've not gotten much time to research that side yet past my great
grandparents. I have information on most of the family members descending from John James
Maska & Helen June Carr."
Eon has info only on son John James Maska, see below:
Descendants of John Paul MASKA
------------------------------
1-John Paul Maska b. 17 Dec 1870, Moravia, Czechoslovakia, d. 1 Jun 1966, Los
Angeles, Los Angeles, California
+Katherine/Catherine STAAB b. Apr 1882, Catherine, Ellis, Kansas
|--2-John James Maska b. 25 Dec 1904, Hayes, Kansas, d. 27 Aug 1991, Portland,
| Multnomah, Oregon
+Helen June Carr b. 30 Jun 1911, Kelso, WA, d. 13 Nov 1992, Portland,
Multnomah, Oregon
(Eon has birth, death, marriage dates for John James & his descendants - including info on both of
the marriages for J.J. Maska & Helen June Carr - one in Skamania County in 1930 and the other
in Clark County 1934. His name was incorrect on the 1930 certificate which is probably the
reason for redoing the marriage in 1934.)
(Eon also says: "As for John James' occupation, he used to tell us that he worked in the movie
industry as an extra back in the days before non-whites were allowed in mainstream movies; he
would play an Indian or a Mexican in the Westerns. He also used to tell us about working with
Bill Cosby on the "I Spy" TV show. I'm not sure what his 'title' was though.")
