There is only one sheriff in each county, so there may have been a deputy sheriff who resided there. All of the county's personnel records from that period have been destroyed. He may have been the town marshall. The Clark County Historical Society, and the county museum may have some of those records. We will be doing some research as it relates to the history of the sheriff's office in the next few months, and if we run across anything that may shed some light on Mr. Knapp, we will forward it on. If she doesn't want to wait, I suppose she could contact the historical society and request a search of what records might be available. "James Knapp choose an unusual and infamous bride, Elizabeth Brau or Brandtt. Elizabeth not only came with a history of being the sole survivor of her family after an attack by Native American Indians, but the small child was allegedly rescued by the James Brothers, the famous Frank and Jesse James. Together, they had 7 children until James Knapp's death, then she married again and had 6 more children until his death, then she married again, this time to Charles Knapp, her first husband's brother. The descendants of the Knapp children began their colorful backwoods life in Wisconsin, then migrated to Oregon and Washington State where some married into the famous Chief Seattle (Sealth) family, which in our family tree is now known as the Elwell family. FROM: Joy on DATE-Feb 22, 2007 3:49:16 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: He wants to know how to get the info listed on our website. Here's his email: Thank you so very much for your email. Robert Earl Passwaters ("Earl Jr" to us of his family) is my oldest brother. We were both born in Woodland in the 1930's, but moved to a 20 acre place near LaCenter as small children when our house in Woodland burned down. Earl Jr. died of pneumonia & whooping cough in January 1944 while we lived at LaCenter. My folks were pretty poor, plus WWII was going on, and I was also extremely sick with pneumonia & whooping cough - at any rate, Earl Jr. was buried at a cemetery between Vancouver & LaCenter without any gravestone marker. None of us other siblings had ever known specifically where the cemetery was located, and hadn't ever been to his gravesite in the 60+ years since his death, and have felt we'd like to locate and visite his grave and purchase a gravestone for him. We thought that our parents had mentioned that the cemetery was near "Four Corners", but weren't sure. In the time since I left the email note with the Clark County Genealogical Society, I and my next younger brother (who lives at Longview) have realized that the location is actually near "Dollar Corner" (not "Four Corners") and my brother recalled that our Dad had given him the cemetery receipt for the cemetery plot purchase. My brother then searched and managed to locate the cemetery receipt in his paperwork. The receipt, dated Jan 28, 1944 from "Limber's Funeral Home" shows the purchase of five graves in Lot 140 of "Manor Cemetery". So, of course, that was a major step forward in our being able to locate Earl Jr.'s grave. I was then able to locate the website for the Memory Memorial Park, and to call the phone number for the Layne's Battleground Funeral Home, and then just two weekends ago, Harlan Denton of the funeral home guided us with his cemetery map to the location of the "Passwaters Lot 140" in the Manor Wilson Bridge Cemetery. So, within the last couple of weeks, my younger brother & I & our wives have actually been able to locate and visit Earl Jr.'s gravesite. We hope to have a gravestone marker made and placed for his grave within the next few months. So we really, really appreciate your willingness to help us in our search for our older brother's gravesite - but we do seem to have already been successful in locating and visiting it. I would like to get Robert Earl Passwaters (Earl Jr.) grave/burial information included in the cemetery and CCGS records, for the benefit of future research efforts. Is that something which you are able to help accomplish? As I say, the cemetery receipt shows it as Lot 140 in the Manor Wilson Bridge Cemetery. Just before 1920, Paul Parmenter, son of Charles Allen and Mary Parmenter was placed under the care of Western State Hospital for the Insane in Stillacom, Washington. He was listed on the 1920 census as an inmate there. By the 1930 census he was released because there was no mention of him. When he was released, he dissapeared and was never heard from again. Before his admission to the hosptial, Paul was living in Centralia, Washington. He was never married before he was admitted. It is rumored that Paul might have changed his name to Johnie Johnson and moved to California to work in the mines. This has never been proven. The brother of Paul Parmenter was named Frank Parmenter. He also lived in Centralia, Washington. He also disappeared just after he was disowned by his father for stealing a bike (this was a big crime in those days). He was also never heard from again.
