It's too bad the people didn't spell their names for the census taker - they merely spelled them the
way they sounded. Our Bauer relatives in 1900 and later came out as Bower in Clark County. I
guess people figured that brothers should have the same spelling for their names and brother Fred
was a Bower. Brother Charles was Bauer.

Castle Garden: Ships Passenger Lists to New York 1 Aug. 1855 - 18 Apr. 1890
Castle Garden existed as a processing station for immigrants between 1855 and 1890. There is no
separate set of records for Castle Garden, as there is for Ellis Island. That means that ships
processed at Castle Garden are found on the micofilm of manifests (ships passenger lists) to New
York in chronological order, along with all other ships sailing into the port of New York

I found this query! It's from Margaret Summitt!
Seeking death info on Louise or Louisa KOERTH. In German it's KO(umlaut)RTH. The
pronunciation is guttral and the final H is silent. I have found every spelling variant imaginable,
including KOERT, GORT, HORT and HURT.
I have a marriage record for Louise, maiden name NICOLAI or NICKOLEY, married 18 Feb
1824 in Jankendorf, Posen Province, Prussia, to Gottfried KOERT. Louise was the third
daughter of the deceased innkeeper Peter NICKOLEY. At the time of her marriage she was age
24; this would place her birthdate about 1800. Husband Gottfried died 17 Nov 1846 in Prussia.
On Ancestry.com you will find that her husband's death date has been wrongly given to Louise.
Louise and Gottfried had seven children. Three of them died in childhood. Three of them came
to America and were married and had children. The other, daughter Louise (b. ca. 1831) I have
found no record of after her confirmation in Jankendorf in 1845.
Louise as a widow came to America, arriving 5 Dec 1857 on the ship "Louisiana" in New York.
With her came her son Daniel and his wife Wilhelmine (ROSENAU) and their children, and other
relatives of Wilhelmine.
I find Louise in the 1880 Census for Maple Grove, Manitowoc Co., WI, living with her daughter
in law Wilhelmine and family. Louise was aged 79 in the 1880 Census. The surname is indexed
KOCETH by familysearch.org.
I have not found Louise in the 1860 or 1870 Censuses. I would guess she was dead by 1900,
certainly by 1910.
Family lore says: Louise lived part of the time with her son Daniel and part of the time with her
son Ludwig, aka Lewis. Son Daniel served in the Civil War 1864-65, died 1871, resided in Maple
Grove, Manitowoc Co., WI. Ludwig aka Lewis/Louis resided in Brown Co., WI (Holland Twp.)
and died in 1927, is buried in Brillion Bluffs Cemetery, Calumet Co., WI. Louise is not buried in
that cemetery, online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sheboygan/ .
Family lore says: Louise had a sister, married surname possibly GRUENING. The sister lived ca.
1860 (or later?) near Beaver Dam, Dodge Co., WI. Louise and her son Daniel walked the 90-odd
miles from Maple Grove to Beaver Dam to buy a heifer from this sister. I have not found any
trace of her.
Louise had a daughter, (Anna) Caroline, who emigrated to the US before her mother. Anna
Caroline married Valentin Sprengler 5 Jan 1854 in Milwaukee. In the 1880 Census Valentin and
Anna Caroline are living in O'Neal Township, San Joaquin Co., CA.

History
A SHORT HISTORY OF THE WASHINGTON STATE GUARD
The Washington State Guard (WSG) traces it's history back to 1855 when the Washington
Territorial legislature enacted the first law creating the organized militia. After Washington
became a state it created its state militia in 1890. The Washington State Militia served in the
Philippines during the Spanish American War of 1898 – 1899. The Washington State Militia was
exclusively under state control until 1903 when the Washington National Guard was formed and
placed under both federal and state control.
During World War One the exclusively state controlled Washington State Guard was reborn. The
Third Infantry Regiment consisting of 16 companies, a medical detachment, and a machine gun
company was formed in principal cities throughout Washington. After WWI the WSG was
disbanded.
On 01 November 1940, over a year before the U.S. entered World War Two, the Washington
State Guard was again re-established with an Infantry Brigade and two Regiments. During WWII
the WSG was used to guard vital installations and to patrol the coast lines. As an invasion of the
U.S. mainland became less apparent, the role shifted to disaster assistance and civil defense. In
1947 the WSG was again disbanded.
On 19 May 1960 Governor Albert Rosellini once more re-established the Washington State Guard
to augment the Washington National Guard as an additional internal security force for the State
and to replace the Washington National Guard when the latter is inducted into active federal
service. The WSG has been serving continuously since then supporting the Washington Military
Department in a variety of missions and assignments.

This project comes from CCGS member Lyndon Gabriel:
"I have been looking for in formation on the Washington State Guard Reserve. I believe my
father was a member and I have been looking for any records. I have tried the State Archives,
and National Guard but to no avail. My dad was Alfred Eugene Gabriel. He was born Mar 4,
1904, Dayton, Yamhill, Oregon. I'm pretty sure he would have been in the Washougal unit since
we lived there all thru the war.
Here is what I know:
The Washington State Guard Reserve which was a "home guard" organization during WWII. It
was authorized by Washington State Guard General Orders #7, March 20, 1942. There were
units in 51 locations in the state, including: Camas, Vancouver and Washougal in Clark County. I
cite Washington ARNG PAM 870-1-6, pgs 700-702 (found this at the CCGS Library).
According to my reference, an enlistment contract for each individual was required. Muster and
attendance records were also to be kept. If there were enlistment papers than there must have
been discharge or some such when the units were disbanded.
I have contacted both the State Archives and the Washington National Guard and they say that
they have no records from these units.
Does anyone have any ideas about where I might look??? "
