Joy- That's what the Diocese wrote. I used an 1836 map to locate the nearest churches to the
wards where my ancestors lived at census time, so I think I have the right churches. It was St.
Patrick's and St. Mary's, both on the lower east side.

Other Parishes. All Catholic parishes in the three boroughs of Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten
Island, and their record holdings, are described in some detail in Volume 8 of the series Inventory
of the Church Archives of New York City, published by the Historical Records Survey of the
Work Projects Administration (WPA) in 1941 (unfortunately, a similar volume for Brooklyn and
Queens was not published). In most cases the parishes retain their registers and they are only
available there. For current addresses see the Official Catholic Directory, published annually.
Manhattan parishes are also listed (with map) in the September 1996 newsletter of The Irish
Family History Forum. Also at NYG&B is Maps of the Vicariates of the Archdiocese of New
York (1992 ed.), which shows the location of each church.

I am interested to know if you have any info on Mary McGarry. She might be my GGF Francis

If you have any info, let me know

Hi,
I'm new to this. My father's line goes through Helen Marie Abbott. Her father is James Joseph
Abbott (1869) of Downpatrick, Ireland. He did in Oct 1929 in Pennsylvaniea. He married Mary
McGarry in 1894 in Philadelphia, Penn. I am trying to locate James' parents. If any of you have
information, I'd appreciate it.

Here are the current requirements for Clark County:
Requirements
Both applicants must be at least 18 years of age or older and must have a current photo ID as
proof of your age.
Applicants who are 17 years of age must be accompanied by one parent or legal guardian who can
provide consent.
Applicants under the age of 17 must obtain permission from the Family Court.
Blood tests and physical exams are not required to obtain a marriage license.
Applicants do not have to be residents of the State of Washington to obtain a marriage license.
The license is only valid for weddings that are performed within the state of Washington.
Proof of divorce from a previous spouse, or death of a spouse, is not required to obtain a
marriage license. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the final decree of divorce
is filed before applying for a new marriage license.
Same sex marriages are not recognized in the State of Washington.
Waiting Period
There is a three (3) day waiting period beginning the first day after you apply for your license and
ending the third day following the date of application. You may not get married during this
waiting period. The License is valid for 60 days beginning on the 3rd day after application.
Witnesses
Witnesses are not necessary to apply for a license, but state law requires that at least two
witnesses be present at the ceremony. Witnesses should be at least 12 years of age

2. 1869 married in Pittsfield, Berkshire Co, MA, celebrant was Father E N PURCELL. (source

7. 1880 census Virginia City, Storey Co, Nevada
8. 1888 homestead certificate #2237, App 4552, Jewell, Clatsop Co, OR
9. 1892 died
RESEARCH NOTES: name not found in index to Berkshire County MA Naturalizations
I think Jim needs to get official death certs for his great grandfather, Timothy CORCORAN and
all Timothy's children. Sometimes death certificates can give more detailed information than just
the country (or state) of birth. Best chance to find place of birth, however, is in naturalization
records. After all, an applicant for federal land had to at least declare an intention to become a
citizen of the US.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Regards,
Marge (writing for Jim)

Also, With the Homestead claim being under Ellen (Helen), it is possible that Timothy did not

One of our staff, Miss Betty, wants to ask about Clark County possibly being a "Gretna Green" -
a place where folks from out of town could go to be married quickly and with less strict rules re:
age, etc. Time period 1895-1910, and people were from Oregon.
The marriage certificate for Timothy Corcoran (Son of Timothy Corcoran in the other query) and
Margaret C Walker is on the Washington Digital Archives. The Marriage date and the license date
are the same day, so apparently in 1898 there was no waiting period in Clark County Washington.
1893
Certificate of Marriage
State of Washington, County of Clarke
I hereby certify, that on the third day of Nov. in the year of our Lord on thousand eight hundred
and ninety eight at Vancouver in the County and State aforesaid, I, the undersigned, a Catholic
Priest by authority of a License bearing the date the third of Nov. A.D. 1898 and issued by the
County Auditor of Clarke County, did on the 3rd day of Nov. A.D. 1898, join in Lawful Wedlock
TIMOTHY CORCORAN of the County of Clatsop State of Oregon and MARGARET C
WALKER of the County of Clatsop State of Oregon
In the presence of Gillquist Sluth(?) and Mary Denoyer, Witnesses
Gelin(?) Verm?????
signed: Timothy Corcoran, Groom
signed: Margaret C Walker, Bride
It would appear that there was no waiting period in Clark County until sometime in the 1960s. I
browsed through marriages on the Washington State digital archives and found marriages as late
as 1960 where the license was issued the same day as the marriage.

WE WILL BE HAVING A ‘SPECIAL EVENT' WEDNESDAY, FEB 4, WITH GENCHAT.
We will be on board in Clark County, with visitors from around the country, and will be hosting
the Sno-Isles Genealogical Society of Lynnwood, WA during their General Meeting. We will not
be here Thursday evening!
Nancy Elder Petersen and Patricia McKee Bauer, along with several regular visitors, will be
staffing the GenChat room beginning about 6:45 p.m. WEDNESDAY evening. We close the door
about 9:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
We have visitors who will give you a willing helping hand with your genealogy brick walls. You
can enter questions or answers at any time but we hope you will be able to join us when we are
open for discussions.
BRICKWALL PROJECT:
We worked on these just a bit last week but Miss Marge of Sno-Isles wants to know if we will
continue it this week.
One of our staff, Miss Betty, wants to ask about Clark County possibly being a "Gretna Green" -

Another question - another member wants to find the naturalization records for his Original
Immigrant Ancestor, Timothy CORCORAN, born Ireland in 1841. He went from Ireland to
Berkshire Co, MA to Virginia City, NV to Clatsop Co, OR
If we have more projects, they will be posted later.
