I used an 1836 map to locate the nearest churches to the wards where my ancestors lived at census time, so I think I have the right churches. It was St. Patrick's and St. Mary's, both on the lower east side. All Catholic parishes in the three boroughs of Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten Island, and their record holdings, are described in some detail in Volume 8 of the series Inventory of the Church Archives of New York City, published by the Historical Records Survey of the Work Projects Administration (WPA) in 1941 (unfortunately, a similar volume for Brooklyn and Queens was not published). In most cases the parishes retain their registers and they are only available there. For current addresses see the Official Catholic Directory, published annually. Manhattan parishes are also listed (with map) in the September 1996 newsletter of The Irish Family History Forum. Also at NYG&B is Maps of the Vicariates of the Archdiocese of New York (1992 ed.), which shows the location of each church. FROM: Nancy Elder Petersen on DATE-Feb 4, 2009 4:49:53 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: I always hope they are all busy typing info into new databases, so they secretary can just say "how do you spell that? Oh yes, here he is!" That happened at a cemetery office recently... FROM: Gene on DATE-Feb 4, 2009 4:48:58 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Pat- I haven't. The Diocese also gave me the telephone numbers, but I'm not sure there's anyone to answer the phones if there's no one to answer letters! FROM: Jim on DATE-Feb 4, 2009 4:48:52 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Okay - just a thought. FROM: Gene on DATE-Feb 4, 2009 4:47:43 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Jim - They sent me their web address. They don't have that info on there or they wouldn't have said I'd have to go to the churches themselves. FROM: Jim on DATE-Feb 4, 2009 4:47:37 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: You can also use the website www.411.com for an on-line phone book. FROM: Joy on DATE-Feb 4, 2009 2:47:00 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Here are the current requirements for Clark County: Requirements Both applicants must be at least 18 years of age or older and must have a current photo ID as proof of your age. Applicants who are 17 years of age must be accompanied by one parent or legal guardian who can provide consent. Applicants under the age of 17 must obtain permission from the Family Court. Blood tests and physical exams are not required to obtain a marriage license. Applicants do not have to be residents of the State of Washington to obtain a marriage license. The license is only valid for weddings that are performed within the state of Washington. Proof of divorce from a previous spouse, or death of a spouse, is not required to obtain a marriage license. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the final decree of divorce is filed before applying for a new marriage license. Same sex marriages are not recognized in the State of Washington. Waiting Period There is a three (3) day waiting period beginning the first day after you apply for your license and ending the third day following the date of application. You may not get married during this waiting period. The License is valid for 60 days beginning on the 3rd day after application. Witnesses Witnesses are not necessary to apply for a license, but state law requires that at least two witnesses be present at the ceremony. Witnesses should be at least 12 years of age FROM: PatB on DATE-Feb 4, 2009 2:46:44 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: I believe sometimes special licenses could be obtained immediately - perhaps with permission from a judge.
