From: Carolyn Ellertson on Thu, 03-01-2007 at 9:03:37 PM Dolores: Well, why would they name the mothers of the makers of America? They were had to stay in their place, right? They probably were out in the fields the day after delivering each one.. From: Dolores on Thu, 03-01-2007 at 9:03:18 PM Yes my maiden name is Whitaker, but my dad and grandmother were from Baker OR. I will have to look in the family bible pages again and see where they all came from before Oregon From: Nancy Elder Petersen on Thu, 03-01-2007 at 9:01:58 PM Jerry, Thanks! I just received a query about ELDER in Kansas, looks like that could be the same family from PA. From: Carolyn Ellertson on Thu, 03-01-2007 at 9:01:08 PM Lots of muster rolls for Ohio soldiers in that book. Good stuff! Probably look for some of my own there, even though most were from Greene County. Dolores: Are you a Whitaker? I'm from a brother of Rev Alexander Whitaker. They went from PA to NC, where my direct ancestor then took up with a bunch of wagon burners, and became a wealthy land owner. He was instrumental in saving some of the Cherokee land for the Cherokees, since there was a law against them owning their own property... FROM: Dolores on DATE-Mar 1, 2007 5:00:24 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: That's the book. There are lots of other names in that book, of the pioneers that came by wagon and built cabins and settled the area. It has not only the Reeder clan in it but lots of others. It is a hoot to read. Sorry that I lost my copy. The women had no names, had a dozen or so kids, but no names. FROM: jerryt on DATE-Mar 1, 2007 5:00:21 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Nancy - in Clark County: George ELDER, farmer; P.O. Clifton; was born in this township January, 1839. His early years were spent on the farm, and his only means of education was that of the common schools of his neighborhood. At the age of 22, when his country was in the throes of civil war, he volunteered and entered the 16th Ohio Militia, and afterward served three years in Co. A, 94th O. V. I., of which he was Orderly-Sergeant. During this period he was at Chickamauga, Stone River and on other fields of blood, and was with Sherman "to the sea." The war over, he was honorably discharged and settled in Jackson County, Kan., in tile business of stock-raising, but that climate and occupation disagreeing with him, in a short time he closed out his interests there and returned to his native township, than which a fairer or better rural district would be difficult to find. Since his return he has followed farming, and is the owner of a farm very pleasantly located, and in a good state of cultivation. His people have honored him with the offices of Trustee, Assessor and Township Treasurer, the last of which he now holds. In 1869, he married Miss Sarah Kitchen, daughter of Abraham Kitchen, an old settler and highly esteemed citizen. She departed this life in 1872, and in 1875 he was married to Miss Jane Duval, daughter of Lewis Duval, and there are, issue of this marriage, three children-one girl and twin boys-all of whom live. FROM: Nancy Elder Petersen on DATE-Mar 1, 2007 3:45:30 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Delores, Here's one: http://www.martygrant.com/gen/refs/1820.htm The 1820 census was the 4th Census of the United States. The data collected by the census takers was not comprehensive, but it is of great value to researchers. They obtained the name of each "Head of Household", and then a numerical enumeration of all of the other family members by age and sex. The 1820 census was slightly better than the previous years. They added one additional column to the male categories (males age 16 and over but under 18), and they also added additional categories for "free colored" and for slaves, instead of just lumping them all in one column each. Only the head of each household was listed by name, everyone else was only included by category. This means that you can't view the 1820 census and immediately know who everyone in each household was. However, you can use the data and compare it to data obtained from other records, and analyze the numbers and make educated assumptions about who was in the family. Of course, this is a hit and miss proposition with varying degrees of success..... ...more FROM: KL Hobby on DATE-Mar 1, 2007 3:44:09 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: It happened again. Here is what she found: "I contacted the Department of Vital Statistics, Marion Co Oregon. They keep these records for only six months. They gave me a phone number in PORTLAND Oregon 1 971 673 1190. These people do in fact keep the records of birth and death. They also have a Automatic phone system that will allow you to make many options but make it virtually impossible to talk to a real person unless you know their name. All the tricks to talk to a real person end up with you speaking to someone in Spanish. Even after you wait on the phone for a half an hour you end with a very pleasant lady speaking only Spanish. The bad news is that they keep Birth records for 100 years and Death records for only 50 years. This information comes from one of their phone options You can obtain Death Certificates by mail, by FAX, or by walking into their office in Portland with Personal ID,and a good reason for having the Cetificate. You can enter questions or answers at any time but we hope you will be able to join us when we are open for discussions. AMONG TOPICS WE WILL DISCUSS THIS WEEK: (If you have help for this, please post it ahead of time in GenChat.) CCGS member Dolores Dougherty already has a lot of info on this line so she's included those details here - so you won't waste your time gathering this info again. This is what she knows and what she wants to find out. "My maternal Grandfather Ervin Guy Reeder that Nancy and the group found so much info on has always maintained that this booklet that was written by Albert Reeder in 1910 on the Settlement of South Charleston (Clark Co.) OH, was his Genealogy family lines. I cannot find any support for that. His father (Ervin Guy Reeder) was Russel B. Reeder according to Census pages and other articles on the web that you all found. Census pages has Albert Reeder the son of John Reeder, who is possibly the son of Jacob Reeder. The booklet is the only support for Jacob Reeder to be the father of John. John had 4 children according to the booklet. Jacob supposedly came to the wilds of Ohio in 1813, by covered wagon, built cabins and had a dozen kids and started the So. Charleston settlement. In 1920 Census page had Albert Reeder very old and a cousin staying in the home with he and his elderly wife by the name of Ora Reeder. Ora Reeder was my grandfather's sister. That is the only link that I can find between the two Reeder families. I cannot locate that John Reeder had a son named Russel B. His kids on the 1860 census, were: Mary born abt1838; Albert born abt1839 and John ( must be a JR) born abt1841. Albert being the one who wrote the booklet. His wife at that time was Mary. No mention of Russel. No other Census pages on John for any other years prior or later, that I can find. If Ora Reeder was Alberts cousin how can I link them together? She was a spinster school teacher. Lived with many of the Reeders and Wilsons clans over the years, both cousins and brothers and nephews. If she was Alberts cousin by blood, then her dad Russel B. would have to have been a son of John Reeder. John born in abt 1805, would have been old enough to have been married and have a son born abt 1827. Prior marriage and divorce maybe? He would have been the eldest of John's kids. Perhaps stayed with his mother so not on the Census with the other wife and later kids. How else could Ora Reeder be Albert Reeder's blood cousin? I cannot locate any Census pages on the Jacob Reeder line. Only one Census page 1860 on John Reeder and family. Finding Russel B. Reeder's father would possibly solve the mystery. Almost all of these folks were from Clark Co. South Charleston, and Springfield OH. The booklet also mentions James Jones who came from Wales, in 1710 was in Delaware, was the father of Daniel Jones who was possibly the father of Mary who was Albert Reeder's wife. Albert claimed that his Great, Great was James Jones from Wales. The only thing that I would like to do, is tie Russel B. and Albert Reeder together somehow. Albert Reeder's Mother is Mary Jones, DAR records show her marriage to John Reeder 8 Mar 1832, Clark Co OH. So she is the daughter of Daniel Jones, who is the son of Albert's claimed great, great James Jones, of Delaware OH. he is on the census page of 1820, no family however. They are both mentioned in the book that Albert wrote in 1910. Wish I knew a way to get someone to go into the South Charleston library and make me a copy of that booklet, all 36 pages. I know the title and the printer and the year. Any ideas? Thanking you all in advance Sincerely Dolores " Please click on the "log-out" button (lower right) before you leave.
