I can't find Jess & Family in 1910 FROM: Joy on DATE-Mar 31, 2009 21:52:38 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Pat, The marriage to Katy Mathys was at least a SECOND marriage for Jess Shelton. If you go to the Washington Digital Archives you will find an undated (undated in the index) marriage record for Jesse F Shelton and Violet L Johnson. Their marriage date on the certificate for the marriage is 9 July 1921. The license date is blank on the certificate of marriage. I am sure this is the same Jesse because I printed off all 3 marriages (to Violet, to Katy and to Marie) and Jess or Jesse's signature is the same handwriting. Violet L (Johnson) Shelton marries again in 1923 to Christ Berg on 3 November 1923. (Again, comparing her signatures, it is the same handwriting). They appear on the 1930 Census as follows: 1930 Vancouver, Clark, Washington 515 Franklin Berg, Christ, head, m, w, 32, m, 26, Norway, Norway, Norway, 1905, pa, Lumber Piler, saw mill Violet, wife, f, w, 21, m, 16, No.Dakota, Michigan, Iowa James, son, m, w, 5, s, Washington, No. Dakota, Norway Page, George (Lodger), Seller, Paper mill Childs, Orville (Lodger), Laborer, Paper mill Page, William (Lodger), Sawyer, Paper mill Owen, James(?) (Roomer), Janitor, store Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Vancouver, Clark, Washington; Roll: 2485; Page: 6B; Enumeration District: 44; Image: 824.0. [so it would appear there was no child from the first marriage to Jess Shelton] The marriage certificate to Christ Berg lists Magnolia Johnson as a witness, so with a name that unusual, Violet's family is also in Clark County on the 1920 Census: 1920 Vancouver, Clark, Washington 903 13th St 12/12 Johnson, P C, head, m, w, 42, m, Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, Farmer Jennie May, wife, f, w, 40, m, Iowa, Iowa, Michigan Magnolia, daughter, f, w, 16, s, North Dakota, Michigan, Iowa Captolia, daughter, f, w, 14, s, Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa Violet, daughter, f, w, 12, s, North Dakota, Michigan, Iowa Perry, son, m, w, 10, s, North Dakota, Michigan, Iowa Marvel, daughter, f, w, 8, s, Canada, Michigan, Iowa Margrate, daughter, f, w, 5, s, Canada, Michigan, Iowa Jane Rose, daughter, f, w, 1 7/12, s, Canada, Michigan, Iowa Stadig, Otto, Head, m, w, 32, Minnesota, Sweden, Sweden, Barfor? [If this age holds true for Violet, she would have been at most 14 years old when she married Jess F Shelton. It would be interesting to get the marriage application from the county.] 1900 Census La Mars, Richland, North Dakota Johnson, Perry, head, w, m, May 1877, 23, s, Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, Farmer Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: La Mars, Richland, North Dakota; Roll: T623_1231 Page: 11A; Enumeration District: 143. Jess became the grandfather to his own son because of the marriage to Elsie. Busy guy - no wonder he died at 59! FROM: Nancy & Pat on DATE-Mar 27, 2009 13:07:48 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Nancy Elder Petersen and Patricia McKee Bauer, along with several regular visitors, will be staffing the GenChat room beginning about 6:45 p.m. Thursday evening. We close the door about 9:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. We have visitors who will give you a willing helping hand with your genealogy brick walls. You can enter questions or answers at any time but we hope you will be able to join us when we are open for discussions. BRICKWALL PROJECT: We don't have any special project this time so Pat Bauer will give you one of her puzzlement things. "Jess Franklin SHELTON was the first husband to my mother, Katy Beatrice MATHYS. I knew they were divorced about 1929 and have discovered an unknown second marriage in Clark County for Jess SHELTON to Marie WINANS May 18, 1929. That second marriage didn't last too long because on April 1, 1939 Marie E. SHELTON married Jacob H. RITTHALER in Clark County, WA. There were two more wives and one child. Jess SHELTON married Agnes (last name unknown) and they had a son named James. Agnes married again to a man named GRANT and the boy was adopted and is named James GRANT. (They might have lived in the Chehalis-Centralia area of WA state.) Then Jess SHELTON married again. This time to the mother of third wife Agnes. Her first name was Elsie but I can't find a surname for her either. After Jess SHELTON died in Stockton, California April 4, 1964 at age 59, Elsie lived in Tillamook, Oregon for a while, then moved back to California. She died probably in the 1980's. (I know Jess Shelton was in a Washington prison in 1930 when he was listed in the census as "inmate.") I'm hoping to find information on both Agnes and Elsie - anything will help! Jess was no relation to me but he was the father of my two older half-brothers." Please click on the "log-out" button (lower right) before you leave.
