Treadwell was said to have had twelve years of experience in both placer and lode mines in California and Nevada before he came to Alaska. In the summer of 1881 he was in charge of the construction of a home at San Francisco for John D. Fry, a banker, when news of the gold strike on Gastineau Channel reached the city. Fry and others paid Treadwell's expenses on a trip to look over the prospects Treadwell's name first appears in the Juneau records on September 13, 1881, when he purchased from Pierre Joseph Erussard the Paris lode claim on Douglas Island. A week later Treadwell formed a partnership with Erussard, D.P. Mitchell and Dave Martin, called the San Francisco Company, and staked four gulch placers on Ground Hog Gulch. A few days later Treadwell and Mitchell staked two more placer claims in the same area. He evidently intended to work the placers as he built a house on the trail below Silver Bow Basin, but for some reason the plans changed. ln October he sold the house to Charles Wells for $200 and thereafter devoted his attention to the Douglas Island property. They employed 12 hands and their annual business amounted to $50,000. Then William Fichthorn, Andrew Ficthorn, Adam Fasig and Joseph Henry formed a co-partnership, trading as Fichthorn, Fasig & Co., and they became the owners and operated the plant until 1861. Andrew Fichthorn and his nephew Andrew purchased the tannery in that year and conducted the business successfully for seven years. Henry Kerper then purchased the property and carried on the business until 1886, when Oscar H. Haubner and William J Heller, trading as Haubner and Heller, leased the plant and they have operated it since. Book of biographies, this volume contains biographical sketches of leading citizens of Berks County, Pa. Picture of Henry Kerper - page 60 Page 62 Henry Kerper was born in the city of Reading, August 2, 1828, and obtained his intellectual training in the private schools of that city. At the age of seventeen years he entered the shops of P & R R R as an apprentrice to the trade of machinist, and served in that capacity for three years. He was then engaged as a machinist in different places throughout the county until 1856, making an excellent reputation as a skilled mechanic. Upon the death of his father, Mr. Kerper took charge of the latter's tannery and successfully operated it until 1882, when he retired from active business on account of his failing health. He is a man of many excellent qualities, and faithfully and conscientiously performs every obligation of a dutiful citizen, standing high in the esteem and respect of his numerous acquaintances. In the month of December 1858, he was joined in Hymeneal bonds with Louisa Reiff, who has the love and friendship of a large circle of acquaintances in Reading, where she has resided for many years. As a thoroughly estimable gentleman and well known citizen of Reading, we take pleasure in presenting on a previous page a portrait of Mr. Kerper. Sex Name M Daniel REIFF (AFN:1JDG-1HK) Born: 22 Jan 1852 Place: Reading, Berks, Pennsylvania Died: 27 Jan 1852 Place: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Note: I question Anna's Death date and the birth / death dates for Daniel. On the 1860 census, there is a Daniel, age 5 with the family. If this Daniel is son of Anna, she couldn't have died in 1852 if he was born about 1855. FROM: jerryt on DATE-May 3, 2007 3:04:03 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: The rest of the story about Ermold: William Spohn Ermold, foreman blacksmith in the employ of the Southwark Foundry & Machine Company at Philadelphia since 1887, was born Dec. 7, 1834, at Reading, Berks county, where he attended public schools until he was sixteen years old. He was then apprenticed to the trade of blacksmith with the P. & R. R. Co., and after learning his trade remained with the company until 1857. He then worked at different places in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Washington, D. C., Iowa, and Idaho until 1881, when he returned to Reading and there followed his trade until 1887, when he accepted the position of foreman blacksmith with the Southwark Foundry & Machine Company of Philadelphia, and this position he has filled in a most satisfactory manner until the present time. In 1860 Mr. Ermold was married to Rosa Regina Reiff, daughter of Ludwig F. E. Reiff and Anna Mary Muntz, his wife, by whom he had seven children: Emma Louise (married to Robert Cavis De Vault), Millie Reiff (married to George Lentner Lewis), Elmer Atwood (married to Lillian Krewson), Mark Atlee (married to Edna Smith Garrett), and three who died, Anna Mary in 1862, William Reiff in 1866, and Herbert K. in 1891. His wife died in 1881. His father was Daniel Ermold, a blacksmith at Reading for forty years. He was born at Reading in 1789, and after learning his trade carried on business for upward of thirty years, at the corner of Third and Franklin streets, when he entered the employ of the P. & R. R. Co., and continued with the company until his decease in 1848. He was married to Sarah Spohn, a daughter of John Spohn of Reading (who was a captain in the Revolution), and by her he had twelve children: Daniel (married to Catharine Taylor), Peter (who married Sarah Henry and after her decease Clara Edelman), Obediah (married to Ann E. Hoff), William S., Harriet (married to William Nagel), Maria (married to Peter A. Breen, and living at Philadelphia at the advanced age of eighty-six years), and six who died in infancy. FROM: jerryt on DATE-May 3, 2007 3:03:08 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Here is a good one: Mr. Ermold's father-in-law, Ludwig F. E. Reiff, was born at Heilbron in Wurtemberg, Germany, in 1793, and when a young man emigrated to Pennsylvania, landing at Philadelphia, and after following his trade of butcher there for several years removed to Reading, where he carried on farming and also butchering until his decease in 1861. His home and farm were situated on North Fifth street, beyond Buttonwood. While at Philadelphia he met his wife, who was also born in Wurtemberg.
