Pat and Nancy: Took my 7 year old granddaughter to her first horse shows last week.
One in Boring, and one in St. Helens. She was adorable in her little girl's version of a
grown up equitation outfit, complete with scalloped leather chaps, bejeweled shirt, and
little western show hat. Just looked adorable, and was awesome. Rode like a little pro,
even though it was only a leadline class! For obvious reasons, they give all of the little
ones a blue ribbon, but she's way beyond them. "That's weird", she said. EVERYONE
got a blue ribbon.. Can't fool kids much these days..share a picture with you one day.

The report by the fire investigators is not officially out, so I can't say, but the people of
the town have shown so much love to us all. There were a few things that were
salvageable, but they sure don't give you much time. You have five business days to
have what is left of the building torn down, but that is not enough. The first day you are
in shock and it is still smoldering. The second day, the inspectors and insurance people
come, and the next day too, and you can't even go look inside until they say it is safe.
Then you have to make the arrangements for heavy equipment, labor, etc., it goes on
and on. By the time the insurance and officials are through, a couple of days have gone
by. So many wonderful people came to help in any way they could. We will never forget
it. God bless them. Someone sent my sister a historical photo of the store (it was a
historical building - the old general store). I think it was built in 1896. The street was
dirt, and some guy is holding a horse right in front of the store. Another old timer told us
that on the same date (June 10th)85 years ago, the entire block burned EXCEPT the
mall building. Now on June 10th 85 years later, it burned and nothing else did. Bizarre
isn't it? One sweet little old lady called my sister and told her the last time she was in
the building, she bought her husband a shirt there...he's now in his eighties! People
from all over have been writing and sending their condolences to them. Even people
that have not lived here for years. At least we have their love.

Okay everyone. I'm back. How are you all? I have some good news on the story I told
you of last time (my search for my mother's half sister with the same name..). I found
her on an early 1900's census for Kansas (just across the river from Kansas City, MO
where mother was born). She is living with her mother, stepfather, and step sisters. I
know it is her, because I have a note of my mother's that tells what the mother of her
half sister's subsequent married name was, and it all concurs! I can't wait to follow
through on it. It was the 1920 census for Johnson County, Kansas, District 113 (Olathe,
Kansas). She is listed as the step daughter, but of course she was Esther's daughter
and her second husband's stepdaughter, he being the head of household. She is 12
years old at this time. She shows up again in the 1925 STATE census and shown as
age 16. This is about the time they were writing to each other, as I asked my mother
about it once, and she said for about three years (ages 13-16). The half sister was
three years older (born 1908, my mother born 1911). I know this has to be the right
one. Now I need to find the marriage between Claude M. Fleming and Esther Crane.
Could be in Kansas or Missouri, and maybe the birth information regarding the
daughter Claudia May Fleming born 1908. Maybe you can help me find it.. thanks
much.
PS: The fire in Kalama last week was the Heritage Square Antique Mall originally
restored and rebuilt by my sister, and subsequently gifted and owned by her daughter
for the past 13 years. There is nothing left now but a pile of rubble. You cannot even
imagine how awful it was...Fortunately everyone got out safely and no one was hurt,
but the stuff inside was mostly one of a kind and irreplaceable. The experience is
difficult to convey, and was hard for us to comprehend. The whole town had to stand
there and watch it burn..

20-year-old woman in 1921 and said he was 21 at the time. However, he was only 17!
Must have been mature for his age. It's definitely Jess although he spelled his name as

Possible Brickwall solution for Gina McBride
I am a descendant of William McBride born 1751, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland and his
wife Margaret Crawford through their son James b. 21 Aug 1781 Rowan County NC.
James has a brother Henry b.21 Aug 1788 Iredale County NC. Henry married Elizabeth
or Eliza Jones 30 Mar 1832 at Nashville, Davidson, TN
They have six children including #4 David H. McBride b. 1832 in IN. I do not know who
he married or his children but itis possible that this is the same family as the Charles
Edward mentioned in the brickwall query. There was a whole group of people who
moved from NC to TN (for about three years then up to IN.).
I have a pretty good history of a family named Andrews who traveled the same route.

I haven't been able to find Truman and Mary Jane McNall in the 1900, 1910, 1920

Wichita Daily Times, Wichita Falls, Texas
Monday, August 24, 1914
Page 2
AGED GAINESVILLE COUPLE ASSAULTED BY BURGLAR
Gainesville, Aug. 24 - Mr and Mrs Truman McNall each more than 70 years old, were
clubbed almost to death in their home here last Saturday night by a burglar.
Mrs. McNall discovered an intruder in the house about 4 o'clock Saturday morning, but
before she could give the alarm the man hit her upon the head with some heavy
instrument, crushing the skull in three separate places. Mr. McNall, who was in another
room, heard his wife groaning and called but received no response. He tried to pull
himself to a sitting position in his bed, although he was already weak. The burglar then
rushed in and hit the old gentleman over the head, also severely crushing his skull.
Some boarders in adjoining rooms heard the noise but rushed in too late to capture or
recognized the aged couple's assailant.
Officers have sent to Oklahoma for bloodhounds with which to locate the guilty person.
Mrs. McNall recovered consciousness shortly after she was injured, long enough to
state that the man was a trampish looking fellow who loafed around her son-in-law's
store all day Friday. Both victims were unconscious Sunday night. Mr. McNall is not as
seriously injured as his wife, but the condition of both is critical and very little hope is
entertained for their recovery.
Both are pioneer citizens here and are numbered among the best people in town.

Marriage Records, circa 1835-1924+.
County Records Microfilm
Marriages, 1880-1916.
State Records Microfilm, Department of Public Health.
Unlike births and deaths, marriages were recorded in the public records at the county
level even before Iowa became a territory. In 1880, legislation required that marriages
be recorded at both the county and state levels. There may be a county index or
internal volume index available. No statewide index to marriages is available.
Before 1880, the information included only names of bride and groom, date license was
issued, place of marriage ceremony, date of marriage, and person conducting the
ceremony. Sometimes listed were the ages of the bride and groom and the names of
any persons giving consent.
After 1880, the information requested for each marriage was expanded, and included
the groom's name, residence, age at next birthday, color, race, place of birth,
occupation, father's name and mother's maiden name; bride's name, residence, age at
next birthday, color, race, place of birth, father's name, and mother's maiden name;
names of any persons giving consent; when and where married; and name and office of
personal conducting the ceremony.
Certified copies of birth and death certificates and marriage licenses are available for a
fee from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, Lucas State Office Bldg., Des Moines, IA 50319,
or in the county from the Office of the Clerk of the District Court.

Edith was the oldest, and she was born in Vancouver, WA, which means
they had moved to Washington at least by 1887."
She included a PDF photo of Charles and Sarah at a lumber camp which had the name
"Camp.4 C.W.P. Co." on a log where they were photographed. Any ideas anyone?
