FROM: Joy on DATE-Jun 4, 2009 2:57:15 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Yvonne, the military is a stickler for details, so I would assume that your father's name was legally changed at some point prior to his enlistment. If his school records showed Kreinbring it's likely that was his legal name - meaning his stepfather adopted him. My own famiily experience with a situation like this - When my dad joined the Navy they went so far as having to go back and having his FATHER's birth certificate corrected (his dad was Francis... and listed as a FEMALE on his birth certificate). My dad's name all through his life is Kersteter... but on his birth certificate it is spelled Kerstetter (with a double T). For his navy years he had to be Kerstetter with the double T). It arrived earlier this week - it came really fast. After I ordered it, I was looking through some records and found another copy of the same certificate which I had obtained on one of my trips to SLC. Wrong Robert Hardy. At least the birthdate is wrong. The family seemed so right! This fellow was born Sept. 18, 1852. Then I ordered a second certificate - the one Jerry mentioned. With that one I discovered I could put in a birth date and if they didn't match they would tell me and there was about a 4 pound charge, rather than 7. That was the wrong date, too. Back to the drawing board - again! Given the date of his birth, the country should probably read "Dutchy of Schleswig". Historically, due to land disputes in the 19th century, the Duchy of Schleswig was sometimes governed by Denmark and sometimes by Prussia. The northern and southern part of Schleswig is typically divided along the Kongeå River. Following the Gastein Convention of 14 August 1865, Prussia and Austria took over the administration of Schleswig. Referendums were held in northern and central Schleswig in early 1920, and northern Schleswig officially returned to Danish rule on 20 June 1920 and southern Schleswig remained under German rule. FROM: Yvonne on DATE-Jun 3, 2009 7:51:09 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: Hi All, I just wanted to tell you what really inspired me to dig deeper. My Grandmother (Augusta) Had a 6 page MY LIFE STORY handout at her funeral. I read this over many times thru the past years. It was about 2006 when I understood the very 1st sentence. My Mother and Dad were born to two sisters who had come by boat from Germany to Iowa near Davenport, through sponsorship of an Uncle. That's when I realized her mother and father were COUSINS. They married July 10th 1906.Two years later they moved to the Lasalle area 52 miles north of Denver.Raymond was born Oct 27th,2006 Also Augusta's mothers birthday.Augusta was born Aug 10th 1911 and weighed 3 1/2 pounds at 1 month old.Later came Vernon, Otto, and Arline. She finished high school at Greeley Teachers College. Then went to Chase's Business College for 3 months. She cooked at a Sheriff's home for prisoners, for 1 year. Then the sheriff lost in an election. She was still in Greeley. At that time the people in Greeley housed 1 or 2 football players, so she cooked one meal for 2 of them. She writes One time they got up to leave she was sitting on a flour can and the lid flew off and down she went into the can. She said "For heavens sake, help me out of here". They did and immediately disappeared outside. Then she writes - By then I had met Norman Johnson, Fanny Ayer's son. Some here will remember Mother and Carl Ayers. Norman and I were married on May 25th,1935 and had 3 boys, Richard on Aug 19th 1936, Jerry on Jan 30th, 1938 and Tom on April 10 1940. By that time our marriage was in a shambles, so we divorced. We had been living in Evans, Colorado, but I moved to Fort Collins to be near the folks. She says Fannie and Carl moved to WA in 1942 and she arrived with her kids on Aug 4th 1944. She met Raymond Kreinbring then who worked for the hill brothers baling. They married Nov 22nd 1944. Karen was born Oct 11th 1945 and Anne on Jan 16th 1949. Dick (richard) and Jerry went to school at Mill Plain Elementary. Moved to Nampa,Idaho for 2 years from April 1949-May 1951. Then back to Brush Prairie.Rented the 8 acres of the old Stalely Place. Augusta took LPN training at Clark College and worked from 1960 till 1976 fulltime. They also lived in a little heights house east of Earl's (Ray's nephew)prior to LPN training. Augusta was my nurse at the OLD Hospital downtown Vancouver WA when I was born. I tried to give just the highlights of her story, sorry I this is so long. She was a wonderful grandma and a great lady. BRICKWALL PROJECT: This is a query that was posted in the Guestbook on the CCGS web page: "I love researching my family history, but I'm getting frustrated because my father's dad left the family when my dad was 3 years old in 1941 last name Johnson. My grandmother remarried Kreinbring and all my father's school records are in Kreinbring. My father enlisted in the army at 17, stationed in GERMANY and married my mother in 1958 in germany, at which time he had to LEGALLY change his name to Kreinbring. So I have found that records may have been lost in a fire in an army office, possibly 1956- 1958? My maiden name is Kreinbring but my real grandfather's last name is Johnson. My Father's father (Norman R Johnson) 1914-1994 grave in Boulder City, Nevada. All I Have is Norman's mother was Fanny Brewer. Any help appreciated and yes I will join CCGS when I can afford to.
