his children were forbiden from learning to speak German. That suited my dad just fine.

The Hamburg-American Packet Company's flyer has reduced the time between New

IT can be appropriately said of the new and magnificent steamship Columbia, of the
Hamburg Line, that she is a "gem of the ocean." The accounts of her remarkably fast
runs continue to be published in leading journals at home and abroad.
BOTH the Augusta Victoria and the Columbia fulfill all expectations and promises as to
being "good sea boats." They are said to be unusually comfortable steamships in the
heaviest and roughest weather.

during band practice, some of the guys put the car up on a lawn across the street,
between two trees, then called the cops. Dan told us all about the events. Then he
said, "I want to know if anyone here was involved in that stunt?" One guy stood up and
said, "Was that a red car?" Everyone roared. It wasn't our class but the next year or so
that it happened.

I just had the weirdest thing happen. As many of you know, I'm working on my class
reunion for August 22. We always invite our former teachers but only have 4 or 5 still
living now and only one of those will probably be with us. Prior to our 1999 reunion I
received a change of address from the Post Office for Daniel Olof Backman, our band
instructor at VHS. I knew his wife had died and I presumed he was maybe moving into
a retirement facility. But, it was in Gig Harbor, WA which was strange. I've been
sending the letters to that address twice for each reunion and they weren't returned.
Finally today I found the address in the online phone book and called. No relation!
Daniel F. Backman lives at the address. Thanks to both of these people moving at the
same time in the same basic area, they forwarding address given me was for the other
guy! Frustrations. I've tried all kinds of things to find Daniel O. Backman - born about
1917 - with no luck. He's not in the SS Death Index so he's "out there" somewhere! He
did live in Snohomish County as a youngster in 1930. The last known address was
Sacramento, CA and he's probably still in that area.

On the brick wall questions listed for Ray Senkel, we have the following results so far:
1895 SD census: Doesn't seem to be available for Codington County.
1910 US census enumeration: Unable to locate the Senkel Family.
Immigration date, port, and ship for Louis Senkel: Unable to locate.
Information on where Louis Senkel was born in Germany: Hopefully, Ray can get
copies of the naturalization papers and find that info there.
Marriage record for Louis and Julia: No SD indices prior to 1905.
Information on Julia's ancestry: Great finds on this (back into the 1500's in England).
Bonus finds: Senkel family in the 1905 and 1915 SD census.

Summary for Ray:
I agree with Joy on the Gula Ellis in Watertown, SD, in 1900 being the wrong family.
Here is a draft of a lineage (and of course everything should be verified):
1. Louis Senkel's wife, Julia A. Ellis, was born Nov 1875 in Ontario, Canada, probably
in the Leeds and Grenville North District. She came to the US in 1899 and lived with
her brother and his wife in 1900.
2. She was the daughter of William Ellis who was born in about 1838 in Quebec,
Canada and Elizabeth Lesert who was born about 1842 in Edwardburgh, Ontario,
Canada and died 28 Mar 1884 in Grenville, Ontario, Canada.
3. William Ellis was the son of Freeman Ellis, who was born about 1800 in Woodstock,
Windsor, Vermont, USA and died 5 Feb 1880, in Grenville, Ontario, Canada and
Jane/Emira _____ who was born about 1805 in Ireland. They married in 1833.

There is a curious second birth entry for a Bertha Ellis, citing Maria Stanley as the
mother, with a birth date in November 1884 (one month after their marriage). At first I
assumed it was two different Bertha's, and that the one born in March 1884 had died
with her mother, but I cannot find a death record for her, and the 1901 census gives the
complete birth date of individuals, and the Bertha living with the family in 1901 was
born in March of 1884. This birth record was recorded almost 15 months after the date
of birth, and I think it may actually have been more of a statement of adoption, since
Maria very likely raised Bertha from the time of her birth (when her mother died). It's
conjecture on my part, but I can't find another explanation of why you would name a
second child Bertha when the first is still living.

Deuel county is a neighboring county to Codington, so it wouldn't be a big distance to
travel to be there to marry Louis in 1900 (after the census date, since Louis was still
single on the 1900 census, and later censuses (1905, 1915 South Dakota Censuses)
say they were married in 1900).

For Julia it says she was born in Canada and has been in South Dakota for 6 years.
1915 SD State Census

Greenwood Township
for Louis Senkel says they were married in 1900
Also, Julia's brother, Samuel Ellis and his wife Cora, both remarried to someone else in
Watertown, Codington prior to the 1910 census – which would lead me to believe Julia
could easily be in Watertown, too.

I do NOT think Gula Ellis, daughter of Dolly (and Azro Ellis) in Codington, South
Dakota (1900) is Julia who married Louis Senkel. Gula is born in Iowa (probably
Blackhawk county) in February 1882. Julia Ellis, wife of Louis Senkel according to
censuses was born in Canada in 1875-1876

Dolly Ellis is still in Codington County in 1910, but none of her children are with her.
Another person searching for information on the Gaffney family says that Gula Ellis
married Thomas William Gaffney:
John and Mary Gaffney listed in 1880 census as being in Milk Grove or Joliett Ill. John
born ~1835 or so. Mary born ~1837 or so & died in ~1881. Had approx 8 children
including a Thomas William, Simon, Julie, Margaret, John, ??. Son Thomas William
married a Gula Ellis and lived in Huon S.D. for a while. Daughter Margaret lived in
Craftsville, S.D.

BRICKWALL PROJECT:
This brick wall comes from Ray Senkel of Tigard, Oregon:
Seeking information on the ancestry of Louis F. Senkel (born about 1864 in Germany)
and his wife Julia Ellis (born about 1876, possibly in Canada).
This information has been found:
1900 census (Louis, 32): 226 Dakota Avenue, Watertown, Codington County, South
Dakota (Series: T623 Roll: 1548 Page: 250). Likely the correct person.
1900 census (Jula, 18): 117 Oak Street, Watertown, Codington County, South Dakota
(Series: T623 Roll: 1548 Page: 262). Unsure if this is the correct person.
1920 census (Louis, 56, and Julia L., 44): Greenwood, Tripp County, South Dakota
(Series: T625 Roll: 1723 Page: 216).
1930 census (Lewis, 67, and Jeula, 54): Greenwood, Tripp County, South Dakota
(Series: T626 Roll: 2231 Page: 150).
South Dakota birth index: 18 May 1902 birth of their first child, William.
South Dakota birth index: 18 Dec 1903 birth of their second child, Arnold.
South Dakota naturalization index: Louis' first papers filed in Codington County, SD,
on 19 March 1896 (vol 358 page 209).
South Dakota naturalization index: Louis' second papers filed in Tripp County, SD, on
2 Nov 1915 (vol 13 page 2016).
Brick walls:
1895 SD census enumeration and 1910 US census enumeration.
Immigration date, port, and ship for Louis Senkel.
Any information on where Louis Senkel was born in Germany and his ancestry.
Marriage record for Louis and Julia (probably about 1901).
Was the Julia found in the census in 1900 (b. Iowa, dau. of Dolly Ellis) the same person
as Louis' wife (b. Canada)?
Any information on Julia's ancestry.
Note:
There is another Louis F. Senkel in NY during the same time period, and this is not the
correct family.
