Edna Merle Elder (daughter of Thomas Benton Elder, son of Cornelius Dempsey Elder) and her husband Robert Lee Griffith were still in Dubuque, Iowa in 1910. They then had a daughter born in 1911 whose birthplace was Spokane. They then have a son born in Montana in 1915 (my father). Robert's WW I draft registration (1917/18) and his 1920 Federal census both place him in Addy, Stevens, WA. I'd love to know if Robert Lee Griffith and Edna are listed in the Spokane City directories between 1910 and 1920,especially between 1910 and 1915. 2. Edna's brother Lysle's 1910 Federal census record places him in Montana. His WW I draft registration (1917/18) and his 1920 Federal census both place him in Spokane. I'm hoping that the Spokane City Directories will shed light on when Lysle first came to Spokane. Actually for Lysle, I'd love to see the Spokane City Directories for the period 1905 up through 1917/18. 3. Robert Lee's brother Eugene A. Griffith and wife Mary are in Spokane in 1920 according to that year's Federal census record. I'd love to consult the Spokane City Directories to try to determine what period of time Eugene was actually in Spokane. He grew up in Amboy, Wash., and joined the US Navy, leaving as a Seaman First Class. He worked for Boise Cascade as a laborer and married Goldie Joyce Cook on September 29, 1945, living in Brush Prairie on the family farm for over 40 years before settling in Wasco in 1999. He loved fishing, clamming, and hunting. He is survived by his daughters, Joyce E. Combs of Grass Valley, Linda Hatch of Vancouver, Donna M. Smith of Warm Springs; son Jack Dean McKee of Amboy; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and son Gordon James McKee. Apparently, there were several different Mercer family roots in Northern Virginia. Further research is needed to compile a more accurate account of this surname. Asa was looking for a job, and his brother suggested that he would make a good impression on the Seattle men if he could import some women for them.
