The births in Arnold are those that the parents bothered to register. Many families never registered any births, and most registered only some of their children. Since children were not baptized as infants in many Rhode Island churches in the 18th century, these records in Arnold are not as much help as for deaths; Quaker records and Episcopal records are very welcome exceptions. By the 19th century church records become a much more useful tool. Newspapers did not list births, although the published age at death can be a clue." The last, in 1884. It is said, that after each fire, the county attempted to re-record the records that survived, or those portions that survived. I may be wrong, but the ealiest book of "restored records" that I have seen at the courthouse begins abt. 1818. Probate does have a booklet of early minister's returns of earlier years. I believe some or all of what we have listed here in "Pioneer Marriage Records" may also be what can be found in the booklet in Probate. Imagine all the "re-recordings", or transcriptions, what was readable, or not & deciphering the handrighting as well! After several times, some names seem to have changed even if they did not in real life. The Hamilton County Ohio Genealogy Society has published in recent years, numerous books of the existing marriage from Probate, or from other sources such as newspapers & church records. See the Published Hamilton Co. Resource section to see what is available. If you have any records of marriages in Hamilton Co. or pertaining to individuals of Hamilton Co. please send to Linda Boorom. The latter's children were: Nettie M.; Wilson B.; Maggie May; Lillie A., d.; Emma Gertrude, d.; James T., d.; and Nannie Grace, d. The four deceased children died of diptheria in a single week in November, 1878. From 1813 to 1879, there was not a death on the homestead of David Elder, nor the S. C. Craighead property. In the latter year, Mr. Elder died. The warrant of the Robert and T. B. Elder and S. J. Craighead farms, was issued in 1784, to George Gray, who deeded to John Elder, the surveyor. The latter on the 10th of April, 1790, conveyed the dame to David, James and Robert Elder. David and Robert deeded the James on the 28th of October, 1802. The patent was issued to the latter in 1802. At that time, the settlers were few and widely scattered in that part of the county. They extemporized a shanty of four upright forks holding up a roof of bark and brush, having no protection at the sides, This shanty stood a few rods north of where Prof. S. J. Craighead's house is situated. They had brought a few cooking utensils and some provisions with them across the mountains on pack-horses. In this simple manner they lived until they were able to erect a house of hewn logs, which was built in a very short time on the ground now used as a garden, beside Craighead's house. The use of this building as a blockhouse is mentioned in another article. Joshua Elder, the surveyor was a son of Rev. When he came to his new home, his children, James, David, Robert and Ann, had reached maturity. He had one son by his first wife, who did not accompany the family, being brought up by his mother's people. He second wife was Mary Taylor. Robert Elder died in 1790 or 1791; his wife (Mary T. Elder) on the 15th of April 1813. Both are buried in Ebenezer grave yard. James Elder, the oldest son, was married to Martha Robinson in 1792, and settled in the half of the farm that contained the first buildings. He was a large muscular man, full of courage and capable of great endurance, and thus was well fitted for pioneer life. His children used to say he never was known to feel any fear except one occasion when coming home late at night from a neighbor's, where he had been butchering, the wolves in considerable numbers came up to him and circled around with hideous howlings. He pounded on a tree with a club and frightened them away. He was a ruling elder in the church of Ebenezer, chosen at the first election for officers of that order in the congregation which position he held till his death, in 1813; his wife died in 1812. His farm was subdivided, his son David living in the part that contained the homestead, and his son James in the other portion. David Elder, the second son of Robert, was born in 1764. He married Ann Nesbitt in 1790, and settled in a farm along the Conemaugh about one mile east of what is now the tunnel on the W. P. R. R. In 1816, he removed with his family to Ohio. Robert, the third son of Robert Elder, was born in 1767. He was married to Mary Smith. They lived in the eastern half of the original tract. He died in 1813, and his wife in 1857. Ann, only daughter of Robert Elder, was married to Archibald Marshall, who made the first improvement if the present Getty and Lowry farms, Conemaugh township. There are a number of others by the name of Elder living in this county who are of the same stock, but descended from a different branch of the Dauphin county family. FROM: jerryt on DATE-Aug 16, 2007 3:15:39 GMT-DATE MESSAGE: JOHN R. ELDER. – His great-grandfather, Robert Elder, emigrated to America from Ireland, about the year 1750. He located in Path valley, Franklin county, Pennsylvania, where he died about the year 1810. According to the family traditions he was a man of small stature, bur great energy. He was a farmer, and also dealt in horses, buying them in the north, training them and selling them in the south. It is perhaps from this circumstance, that so many of his descendants have a great penchant for horse flesh. Robert Elder brought a wife with him from Ireland. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Watt. By her he had two sons, David and Abraham. After his first wife's death, Robert Elder married again and became the father of five sons, to-wit: John, Matthew, Robert, Samuel and Joseph. Of the sons of the second wife but little is known. The youngest one, Joseph, died in 1858, in Ligonier valley, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, and some of his descendants are still there. The son of the first wife, David and Abraham, removed to Half-moon, Centre county, Pennsylvania, shortly after the close of the revolution. Abraham died there about 1825. He was an extensive farmer, and kept a public house. His son Robert inherited his estate, and became well known as a farmer and drover. His (Robert's) only surviving son is George W. Elder, an eminent lawyer of Lewistown, Pennsylvania. David Elder removed to Spruce creek, Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania, in 1796. He purchased a farm near the village of Graysville, where he died in 1823. He served a short time in the army during the revolution, and was also in one of the expeditions against the Indians, in the western territory. His wife was Jane Boggs, daughter of Andrew Boggs, who was one of the first settlers of Bald Eagle valley, Centre county, Pennsylvania, having settled there as early as 1767. David Elder had five sons and three daughters, nearly all of whom are now dead. Robert, the oldest son, was the only one of them that ever located in Indiana county, Pennsylvania. FROM: Nancy & Pat on DATE-Aug 14, 2007 23:50:17 GMT-DATE EMAIL: patbauer@pacifier.com MESSAGE: Nancy Elder Petersen and Patricia McKee Bauer, along with several regular visitors, will be staffing the GenChat room beginning about 6:45 p.m. Thursday evening. We close the door about 9:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. We have lots of visitors who will give you a willing helping hand with your genealogy brick walls. You can enter questions or answers at any time but we hope you will be able to join us when we are open for discussions. BRICK WALL: This brickwall is from our CCGS Newsletter Editor, Gene Kuechmann. Let's see if we can help her. Stephen Wilder was born 21 Mar 1824 in Gloucester, RI. His parents were Asaph and Olive (Wilkinson) Wilder of Gloucester. Stephen died 10 Mar 1868 in Storrs Township, Ohio (now Price Hill, Cincinnati, OH).We haven't found much about his life before 1809, but there is probably some information waiting to be mined in the town records of RI. I think he got a liquor license in 1808, according to a town history. On 8 Jan 1809(?) he married Betsey Harris, daughter of Steven and Ruth Harris. This marriage was recorded, along with many others, in 1811. Their son was born 4 Apr 1809, and Betsey died the next day. Stephen and his brother William were involved in the coastal/Cuban trade. Stephen was awarded a Seaman's Protection Certificate 8 Nov 1809. He arrived in the vicinity of Cincinnati in 1814 (according to his youngest son) or 1820 (according to another source). Stephen's first appearance in a census is 1840. In 1823 (Book of the Wilders and b. date of first child) he married Elizabeth Mooney, who was born 1905 in PA or OH. They had 10 sons. Brick wall 1: We have found no record of this marriage. According to cemetery records, Elizabeth's parents were _________ and Patience Mooney. In the 1850 census, a Patience Mooney, age 64, is in the Wilder household, birth place Nova Scotia. Also living there is a Stephen Mooney, age 22, born OH. His cemetery record gives his parents as Stephen and ______ Mooney. In the 1880 census, he says his father was b. New Jersey, and his mother MD. In 1900, they were both born in NJ. Stephen Mooney's wife Mary's cemetery record says she is Stephen Wilder's sister-in-law. (All of these people are buried in Stephen Wilder's lot in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cinci.) Brick wall 2: Who are Elizabeth Mooney's parents? Brick wall 3: Who are Stephen Mooney's parents? Brick wall 4: Are Elizabeth and the much younger Stephen W. Mooney brother and sister? Do they have the same mother and the same father? (If Mary is Wilder's sister-in-law, she is Elizabeth's sister or sister-in-law, so her husband is Elizabeth's brother?) After moving to Cincinnati, Stephen Wilder (sometimes called Capt.) became a prosperous pork packer & shipper, said to carry on trade between Cinci and New England via the Mississippi. Brick wall 5: Where can we find shipping records for this trade? Please feel free to come into GenChat anytime and post a query.
