Dr. Arthur Clarendon Wright
World War I
In the early days of World War I, soldiers who became fatigued, exhausted, anxiety-ridden or who cracked under pressure were seen as weak or as malingerers, cowards or deserters. As the war progressed, the United States became more lenient and started to understand these men were suffering from mental or emotional distress and were "shell shocked." Some of these returning soldiers were sent to New York General Hospital #1, Ward #54 for treatment and care. Dr. Wright was a physician assigned to work with these returning soldiers.
