Volunteers at the Jefferson County Library have compiled an index for the 1910 Jefferson County Federal Census. Images of the original census data are available on both microfilm and Heritage Quest CD ROM T624-1656. Click here for an index to the files on the CD ROM.

Listings are by surname and forename; Soundex code, age and birthplace are included to facilitate searching and selecting candidate entries. Index data consists of the enumeration district, precinct, ward, page, and line; the file name on the CD ROM is also provided.

Soundex codes in the tables are valid for both the original and NARA Soundex rule-sets. Use your browser's Find command in searching for all entries of a given Soundex code.

Soundex Calculator

How to use the Soundex calculator:

  1. Type the name you want to convert in the Surname box, below.
  2. Click on "Convert."

Caution: Index errors are a fact of life — enumeration, compilation and transcription. We have made a conscientious effort to interpret, transcribe and proofread the original data; realistically errors will always remain. Please report errors, inconsistencies, alternate interpretations, etc. to pkohl@olympus.net.

How can a careful genealogist get the greatest benefit from this index?

1. Examine all index entries carefully. Be very grateful that the index exists and very suspicious of every entry.

2. Use the "find" capability in your browser to help you in your search.

3. Use the Soundex codes to find all candidate entries.

4. Use all the information in the index. Unusual forename? Search on the forename.

5. Look at the images of the original records on microfilm or the CD ROM.

Remember: an index can help you find a name if it is present; the absence of an index entry never means that the name did not appear on the original document.
