The place names below are included because of their probable interest to the genealogist. The list includes town sites (existing and abandoned), other settlements, and a few locations of historic interest. If a post office existed at a location, the dates when the post office opened and closed are given. The dates between 1850 and 1910 or 1920 when a post office opened and closed are very useful as an indication of when and how long an area was settled. About 1909 the start of Rural Free Delivery eliminated the need for very small, rural post offices. Starting about 1920 the growth of the highway system has continually reduced the need for smaller local post offices. A complete list of Jefferson County post offices is available.
