Welcome
Mount
Adams Chapter
Mount Adams Chapter
is located in White Salmon, Washington, which is in the beautiful
Columbia River Gorge area in southern Washington.
The area is well known for windsurfing, biking, hiking, white water
rafting, salmon fishing, and many more outdoor activities.
The
chapter was started by Cheryl Strong who was appointed Organizing
Regent in 1999.
The chapter was officially confirmed April 15, 2000, with 12
organizing members. They were Cheryl Strong, Carol Ecklund, Donna
Everett, Nancy Knowles, Nina Clark, Dorothy Miles, Emily Aman,
Elizabeth Strong Ayers, Cora Brown, Neva Schupbach, Bette Forgy, and
Veda Bledsoe.
The name of
the chapter
was chosen because the area the chapter serves is located at the foot
of Mount Adams which is located in Klickitat County in Washington
state. Most of Klickitat County is able to see the mountain
which is central to the area. Mount Adams is the second highest peak in
Washington State and the third highest in the Cascade Range. It is a
broad volcanic massif which towers above the surrounding hills
about 30 miles north of the Columbia River. The summit is covered by a
large icecap, and over a dozen glaciers pour down its flanks, most via
massive and treacherous icefalls. However, the South Rib
(Suksdorf Ridge) route is crevasse-free, providing one of the easier
climbing routes and nicest ski runs on any of the northern Cascade
volcanoes. It has over 7,000 ft (2,100 m) of skiable vertical in the
spring, including a near-perfect 30-degree pitch for over 2,500 ft (800
m) below the false summit. An even better descent is the Southwest
Chutes variation, which drops for over 4,000 vertical feet
(1,200 m) from the false summit at a consistent 35-40 degree pitch.
Mount
Adams Chapter serves the community
by donations to the Veterans Home in The Dalles, Oregon. We remind the
community of Constitution Week with community displays and
presentations at the schools. We actively support the DAR schools
with donations. DAR Project Patriot sponsored by DAR for support of our
troops is a favorite project of the chapter.
