November 2009

November 5, Thursday, 7 – 9 p.m.  MAC COMPUTER INTEREST GROUP - dBug Resource Center, 9620 Stone Avenue North, Suite 202, Seattle, 98103.  “Reunion Basics Software”  Lisa Marker will provide a basic introduction to Reunion, the genealogy program for Macintosh computers.  Those with any level of expertise using Reunion are welcome to attend.

November 7, Saturday, 10:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.  CANADIAN INTEREST GROUP - SGS Library.  "Canadian Gazeteers and Historical Geography".

November 14, Saturday, COMPUTER INTEREST GROUP - Not meeting this month; members participating in LDS Family History Expo 2009.

November 14, Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.  LDS Family History Expo 2009 - Redmond Stake Center, 10115 172nd Ave., Redmond, Washington.  SGS will have an information table at this event.  

November 15, Sunday, 2 - 4 p.m.  SGS Group Leader Training, for Special Interest and State Focus group chairs and presenters only, in the use of audio-visual equipment, gmail accounts, and other resources available at the SGS Library.

November 16, Saturday, 1 - 3 p.m.  SGS PROGRAM MEETING - SGS Library. “Breaking through Brick Walls”, a panel discussion with SGS mentors, Ginny Sommarstrom, Jean Roth, Cary Bright, Christine Schomaker, Annette Dwyer and Pat Younie sharing techniques and experiences in solving problems with those elusive ancestors.

November 18, Wednesday1 - 3 p.m.  STATE FOCUS GROUP: ILLINOIS - SGS Library.  "Illinois Brick Walls" .

November 21, Saturday, 10:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.  IRISH INTEREST GROUP - SGS Library.  Open discussion by group.  Bring problems and favorite websites as well as new research information and sources. 

November 21, Saturday, 1 - 3 p.m.  GERMAN INTEREST GROUP - SGS Library.   Open discussion by group.  Bring problems and favorite websites as well as new research information and sources. 

November 23, Monday, 3 - 5 p.m.  SGS Board Meeting - SGS Library.  Submit agenda items by Wednesday, November 18, to sgssecretary@gmail.com. 

November 25, Wednesday - SGS Library closes at 3 p.m.

November 26-31, Thursday - Monday,  SGS Library closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.

December 5, Saturday, 1 - 3 p.m.  STATE FOCUS GROUP: PENNSYLVANIA - SGS Library.  Come share your Pennsylvania questions and resources.  

December 6, Sunday, 2 - 5 p.m.  SGS HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE - SGS Library.  Save the date!  Enjoy food, fun and music, plus an SGS Book Sale table. Cary Bright and others will share a few genealogical “crafty” things for holiday gift giving. Discuss what you do during the holidays to keep Family History awareness alive with your friends and relatives. Share special gift ideas and traditions. 

December 12, Saturday, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  COMPUTER INTEREST GROUP - Check back for location.  "What I Did on My Genealogy Summer Vacation". Group sharing with Dawn Bingaman as leader. 

The IRISH INTEREST GROUP and GERMAN INTEREST GROUP will not meet this month.

January 2010

January 16, Saturday, 10:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.  IRISH INTEREST GROUP - SGS Library.  “Basic Irish Research – An Overview”  For both new and experienced researchers; putting the pieces together and overcoming difficulties in doing Irish research.  

January 16, Saturday, 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.  GERMAN INTEREST GROUP - SGS Library.  “Reading German Church Records”  Even if you don’t read German, you can decipher those puzzling church records to glean basic genealogical information.

January 18, Monday, 1 - 4 p.m.  BEGINNERS CLASSES - SGS Library.  "Beginner's Computer Genealogy - Part 2"  Computer Interest Group members Ginny Sommarstrom and Richard Snook continue their introduction to hardware, software and using computers for genealogy research. January 23, Saturday, 1 - 3 p.m.  INTERMEDIATE RESEARCH SERIES - SGS Library.  “Advanced Census Techniques”  Census records are among the most effective tools in genealogy research – but do you get everything you can out of your searches? Speaker: Karen Sipe.

January 25, Monday, 3 - 5 p.m.  SGS Board Meeting - SGS Library.  Submit agenda items by Wednesday, January 20, to sgssecretary@gmail.com.

January 30, Saturday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.  SGS PROGRAM MEETING - SGS Library.  All-day program in two parts:  10:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.  "Journey of Man with Dr. Spencer Wells" - National Geographic video presentation; and  1 - 3  p.m.  “Genetic Genealogy - How to Use DNA to Solve Genealogical Puzzles and Uncover New Questions You Never Faced Before" with speaker Larry Jones.  Bring the name, location and date of your most ancient ancestor in each of your male ancestral lines.  If you have a wireless laptop computer, bring it along and use the SGS Library wifi to connect to the Internet.  You may go home with the solution to an ancestral puzzle!  More about this program here.

February 6, Saturday, 1 - 3 p.m.  INTERMEDIATE RESEARCH SERIES - SGS Library.  “Dating and Identifying Old Photographs” – there is much to be learned about your historical family photos by the style of dress  and processing. Speaker: SGS Past President Marilyn  Rose.

February 15, Monday, 10:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. - BEGINNERS CLASSES - SGS Library.  "Beginners Genealogy Class".  This repeat of our successful August all-day class will introduce family history research and help you organize your findings.  Details here.  Space limited - SGS Members only.  Register with SGS Director of Education Jean A. Roth at jeanaroth@juno.com.   

February 20, Saturday, 10:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.  IRISH INTEREST GROUP - SGS Library.  “Using Census and Census Substitutes in Irish Research – Putting The Pieces Together”  Before 1901 and 1911 - Ireland lost most of its census records –so other records must be used including Griffith’s Valuation and Tithe Applotment Records.

February 20, Saturday, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.  GERMAN INTEREST GROUP - SGS Library.  “The Wars That Defined German Migration.” Explore the causes and effects of war between the 17th and 19th centuries which caused mass German immigration - beginning with the Thirty Years War in 1618 and ending with the Unification of Germany in 1871.

February 24, Wednesday, 7 - 9 p.m.  Seminar Committee Meeting - SGS Library.  Planning for Spring Seminar.

February 27, Saturday, 1 - 3 p.m.  INTERMEDIATE RESEARCH SERIES - SGS Library. “Getting The Most From Online Data Bases” including Ancestry and Footnote. There is so much information out on the World Wide Web – are you using your searches effectively? Speaker: Dr. Gary Zimmerman, President of the Fiske Genealogical Foundation.
