SGS Goes Wireless!
The
SGS Library is now equipped with a DSL internet connection and wireless
router (also known as "WiFi"). Bring your wireless-capable
notebook computer to the library and you will be able to connect
to the internet while doing your research.
The service will
be available during open hours, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m, Tuesday through
Saturday. SGS members may use the new wireless internet
connection, as well as society computers and data CD's, at no
charge. Non-members will be asked to contribute $1.00 per hour
to use these resources, in addition to the non-member fee of $5.00 for use of
the library.
Remember, bring your computer with you the next time you visit the library and try out the WiFi!
NEW! - STATE FOCUS GROUPS
Beginning
June, 2005, two meetings will be held each month to focus on research
in the states that SGS members indicated to be of greatest interest in
the recent survey. These meetings are designed as an opportunity for
members to connect with others who are researching in the same areas.
Each meeting is loosely structured to include
information about the Seattle Genealogical Society’s resources for a given state,
a discussion of research strategies to employ with resources unique to that state,
and contributions from members about their individual resources, successes and “brick walls”.
The
first meeting for each state will allow time for members to form small
focus groups that may continue to meet to share information and
resources and to provide ongoing support and enjoyment as members'
pursue their family history research. Please come bringing your
favorite websites for researching the state, your knowledge of local
courthouses and genealogical societies, your secrets for successful
research in the state, and your questions. Sharing with others
interested in the same area may produce some interesting results!
Pennsylvania,
important to over half our survey respondents, will be the subject of
the first meeting, to be held Tuesday, June 7, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.,
in the 2nd Floor Conference room at National Archives-Pacific Alaska
Region (Seattle) building, 6125 Sand Point Way NE (across the street
from the SGS library).
In
order to accommodate as many members as possible and to cover as many
states as possible in a timely manner, several Saturday morning
meetings will be held at a new location for us, the North East Branch
of the Seattle Public Library, 6801 35th Ave. N.E., Seattle.
To find meetings for the states you are interested in with their
corresponding times and locations, check the Calendar of Events.
We hope to see you soon!
ATTENTION
SGS MEMBERS! The next QUARTERLY MEETING will be held Monday, March 14,
2005 at 7:00 PM at the SGS Library. This is one of the most important
meetings of the year. The Nominating Committee will present nominees
for the 2005-06 SGS Board of Directors and take further nominations
from the floor during the meeting. After the formal meeting, the
current Board of Directors will conduct an OPEN FORUM soliciting
suggestions from all members for the improvement of our society.
