Lincoln
County was organized in 1883 and was once part of Spokane County. It is
named after President Abraham Lincoln. It is located in the northeastern part
of the state. It was first settled by former miners and government freighters,
and its county seat, Davenport, was located by a spring on the trail to Walla
Walla. In 1880 Fort Spokane was established on the northern edge of the county
to protect the settlers from the Indians. Today the county is one of the major
wheat growing areas of the state and the nation. Also of importance are cattle raising and the production of
barley and oats.
