Pend Oreille County was formed from Stevens County in 1911. It is named after an Indian tribe of the area. The county is located in the far northeastern corner of the state and borders Canada to the north and Idaho on the east. It was first visited by Europeans in 1809 when David Thompson of the Northwest Company passed through the county. The famous Jesuit missionary, Father DeSmet, was also active in the area. During the mid-nineteenth century, gold was discovered along the Pend Oreille River bringing in the first settlers. Steamboats brought the settlers supplies until 1909 when the first railroad arrived. Today the majority of the county is made up of national forest land. Its major economic activities are logging, agriculture, mining and tourism.
