  • 12 Mar 2012 - Mercer Island, WA
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State presents Stephen Morse, creator of the One-Step website, who will be presenting two lectures:
"Getting Ready for the 1940 Census: Searching Without a Name Index." When the 1940 census is released in April 2012, it will not have a name index. Such an index will not be available for up to six months afterward. Without an index, finding people in the census will require searching by location instead by name. The census is organized by Enumeration Districts (EDs), so we’ll need to convert each address to an ED in order to find it in the census. The One-Step website contains several tools for obtaining EDs. This talk will present those tools and show circumstances in which each can be used. It will also demonstrate a quiz for determining the best tool to use in each specific situation.
"One-Step Webpages: A Potpourri of Genealogical Search Tools." The One-Step website started as an aid for finding passengers in the Ellis Island database. Shortly afterwards, it was expanded to help with searching the 1930 census. Over the years it has continued to evolve. Today it includes about 200 web-based tools in 16 categories, ranging from genealogical searches to astronomical calculations to last-minute bidding on E-bay. This talk will describe the range of tools available and give highlights about each.
Location: Auditorium, Stroum Jewish Community Center, 3801 East Mercer Way, Mercer Island. Doors open at 7 pm. Program starts at 7:30 pm. Free for members; $5.00 for non-members.

  • 28 Mar 2012 - Bremerton, WA

There will be two programs: The first program will be "The Long Awaited 1940 United States Census" by Larry Harden. He will tell us what questions the 1940 census asked on April 1, 1940. Did you know there were a number of questions asked including where people were 5 years before and information about wages? One in 20 people were asked additional questions on the census form such as age at first marriage, fertility and other topics. Learn how this latest census can assist you in your research regarding your genealogy. The second program will be "An Update on the Kitsap County History Book" by Nina Hallett. She is a member of the Kitsap County Historical Society and she will bring us up to date on the status of the remaking of the county history book. This project has proven to be more involved than the historical society first thought. Some of the old photos were found to be missing and replacement photos were difficult to find. This book, when completed, will be a great asset to Kitsap County and its residents. Visit their website above for more information.
