The Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State general meeting will be held Monday, April 8, at the Stroum Jewish Community Center Auditorium. Howard Droker, historian and author, will discuss why Jews came to Washington Territory and Washington State, how they made their living here, and how they maintained and adapted their Judaism to their new circumstances. Learn about the first three waves of Jewish immigrants: German-speaking Jews from Central Europe, Yiddish-speaking Jews from Eastern, and Sephardic Ladino-speaking Jews from Turkey and Rhodes. You'll see historical photographs of Washington State synagogues, Jewish businesses and organizations, Jewish leaders, and Jewish life from each wave of Jewish immigrants from Territorial Times to World War II. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the program starts promptly at 7:30 pm. The JGSWS library will be open. WiFi will be available (bring your laptop.) The Wenatchee Area Genealogical Society general meeting will feature Kay Sibley, Executive Director of Borderlands Historical Society in Oroville, with a talk on "The Mystery of 'Okanogan' Smith." The program begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 171 Eastmont Avenue, East Wenatchee, Washington, followed by a short business meeting and time for member sharing and networking. The Genealogical Society of South Whidbey Island general meeting will be held at 1:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hwy 525 & Woodard Road, Freeland. Eric Stroschein will present a program that is an examination and discussion of the new Family Search facilities and software available at the LDS site. Since there have been many questions about the new Family Search, this should be a very useful program for the GSSWI membership. Come and enhance your RCQ (Research Competence Quotient). The Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society general meeting will be held at 1:00 pm at Arlington Free Methodist Church, 730 East Highland Drive, Arlington. Program: "Records of the Veterans Administration" Society member, Marlene Agnes, will discuss the types of records created by the Veterans Administration which are of interest to the family historian. Marlene retired from the Seattle office of the VA after many years of service. She and her husband provided the driving force for creation of the Tahoma National Cemetery in Auburn. The Whidbey Island Genealogical Searchers general meeting will be held at 1:00 to about 3:00 pm at 2720 Heller Rd, the fire station #25, just north of Crosby Road in Oak Harbor. Speaker: Laura Sparr, Past-President and former Education Committee Chairman of Washington State Genealogical Society. She is one of the key people responsible for the founding of WIGS and always presents a topic that is of interest to our members. The Fiske Genealogical Library Mac Group will present a program on "Out of the Attic - Using Memorabilia To Help Tell Your Story" from 7-9 pm. Most of us have some memorabilia from our families or we know someone in the family who does. Is it your g grandmothers thimble, your g g grandfathers Civil War sword, a favorite cook book from your mother, a trophy from some contest many years ago? No memorabilia? Where can you find it? What do you do with these items? What stories do they tell? Where can they lead you? How do they become part of the story you are trying to tell? The Skagit Valley Genealogical Society general meeting will be held 7 to 7 pm at the at the Burlington Community Center, 1011 Greenleaf Ave, Burlington. Program: “Skagit County Family History Book.” Hazel Rasar, Past President of SVGS, and Dan Royal, Archivist and Historian for SkVGS, will preview the Skagit County Family History Book. The Rasar family was a pioneer family in the valley. Hazel has been researching her roots here and abroad. She has also served on the WSGS Board. Dan is president of the Skagit Valley Historical Association. He also has deep roots in the Valley. More details are available on the Society website.

The Genealogical Society of South Whidbey Island presents a Spring Seminar on Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm at the Useless Bay Gold and Country Club in Freeland. Karen Krugman, of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, will be the main speaker. Her topics will be: "Chasing Your Elusive Ancestor On the Internet," "So Your Female Ancestor Has No Surname?" "STUMBLE - My Favorite Way to Find Ancestors," and "Researching There When You Are Here." Cost is $50, which includes lunch and snacks. The Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society presents a Spring Seminar featuring William Dollarhide and Leland Meitzler. Bill's topics will be "Using Deeds to Trace the Trails of Your Ancestors" and "Civil War Era Genealogy." Leland's topics will be "Your Ancestor Didn't Burn in the Courthouse Fire" and "The X Files - Dealing with Black Sheep in the Family Tree." The Bend Genealogical Society is excited to announce their Spring Seminar, featuring author, lecturer and professional genealogist Christine Rose, CG, CGL, FASG. The Spring Seminar events will include a social evening with Christine on Friday, April 26th, and an all-day seminar on Saturday, April 27th. The Grays Harbor Genealogical Society will sponsor a two-class workshop by Mary Kathryn Kozy. Classes are: "Genealogy on the Internet: Beyond the Basics" and "FamilySearch.org & Genealogy in the Future." The workshop will be from 1-4:30 pm at the Aberdeen Museum of History, 111 East 3rd St, Aberdeen. Cost is $10 for GHGS members, $15 for non-members. "The Kidnapping of Johnnie Hans and How I Found Him" Presented by Judy Alexander Clayton. A fascinating story of a murder, the kidnapping of a toddler, and his older brother's search for him in the late 1880s; Frederick "Lone Star" Hans became a famous figure in history while searching for his little brother, encountering Gen. Sherman, Gen. Crook, Wild Bill Hickok, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, etc. Using genealogy and the Internet, Judy was able to bring all of the pieces of the story together and bring a disconnected Hans family together for a reunion 130 years later.

The Halsted Trust Genealogical Conference will present "Exodus: Movement of the People," the story of migration from, to and within the British Isles. It will be held on Friday, September 6, 2013 through Sunday, September 8, 2013, at the Hinckley Island Hotel, Watling Street, Hinckley, Leicestershire, England LE10 3JA. The conference lectures will be aimed at family historians interested in the theme of British Migration from, to and within the British Isles. The conference lectures and after dinner talks are expected to feature nationally and internationally known genealogical speakers but the organisers also plan on some new talks and subjects that have not been presented before.
