  • 9 Nov 2009 - Mercer Island, WA
Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State presents East European Jewry up to the "Great Migration" presented by Natan M. Meir in the auditorium, Stroum Jewish Community Center, 3801 East Mercer Way, Mercer Island. Doors open at 7:00 PM, Presentation starts promptly at 7:30 PM. Free admission for JGSWS members, $5.00 for non-members. The JGSWS library will be available. WiFi will be available (bring your laptops).
About Our Program: Many American Jews think of their East European ancestors as “traditional” shtetl Jews up to the moment of their immigration to the U.S., but the historical reality was much more complicated. This lecture surveys the history of East European Jews from the twilight of old Poland at the end of the 18th century through the vicissitudes of subjectship under the Russian Empire in the 19th century. You will gain an understanding of the vitality of Jewish life in Eastern Europe and the multiple crises that Russian and Polish Jews faced at the turn of the 20th century – the age of the “Great Migration.” Topics to be discussed include tsarist policies towards Jews, shifts in Jewish leadership, the roles played by pogroms and anti-Semitism, internal cultural and religious dynamics, and economic and demographic transformations. For the most part, the presentation will cover the Russian Empire (The Pale of Settlement) but will also refer to Russian Poland (“the Congress Kingdom”) and Austrian Galicia.
