What are Queries?
Queries, in genealogical publications, have traditionally been similar to classified ads. They are short paragraphs, with specific details about a person or family, usually complete with a specific question or "query" about that person or family. These days, queries are published in magazines, newsletters, journals, newspapers, e-mail mailing lists and on web sites. The queries found here on the TPCGS web site are submitted by members and non-members who have research in this area of the world. The queries submitted are published in the society's quarterly and on this web site. If you are looking for research help besides this type of query, see the following pages for further options:

Any society member may submit queries for publication in The Newsletter and on the society's web site. Non-members who are doing research in the Tacoma-Pierce County area prior to 1930 may send queries which will be published at the discretion of the Queries Editor. He d from an accident. He was the son of Peter Olaus Olson AAS and Marit JONS who also had Ole, Karen, and Christina.

Seek info on Catherine A. MITCHELL, (b ca 1851) dau of Catherine WEBSTER ROGERS. According to 1906 article of Tacoma Ledger concerning death of her step-father Edwin R. ROGERS of Steilacoom, Pierce Co., WA, Catherine was res in Steilacoom. Did she have ch or grand-children in the area? Catherine also had a brother William WEBSTER (b ca 1856) who wasn't listed in the 1880 census when he would have been ca 23.

Seeking more info about Kate MELVILLE, perhaps the first woman sheriff in WA state. Her father was the first sheriff in Pierce County from ca 1855-1859. Kate and her fa d prior to 1904. If they were bur in the Old Settler Cemetery in Lakewood, Pierce Co., WA their headstones may have been lost or illegible. Robert MELVILLE, (12 Aug 1842, 5 Jan 1867) bur in the Old Settler Cemetery, may be a relative.

Seek birthplace and death records of my grandfather, Charles JOHNSON, b 1859. He m 8 Sep 1906 at Chicago, IL, Thora SVENDSEN SALVESEN (b 1872, Stavanger, Norway), a widow with 3 children. Charles JOHNSON was thought to have grown children from a previous marriage. They had 1 ch, Evelyn Thorvalda JOHNSON, b 11 Jan 1908, Chicago, who m Henry D. MARTENS in 1926 and gave birth to 4 ch. Thora, who next m Chris CHRISTENSEN in 1919, d in Iowa in 1934. All of her children d by 1935 leaving no clues to Charles JOHNSON. In the 1910 census, Thora lived at S.W. Avers Ave., Chicago, and was listed as a widow. Cook Co. can find no records for him.

Seek info on grandmother, Jean Violet McCLELLAND/McLELLAND, who was b in Scotland about 1898. She went to Canada as child laborer and m Frank KIRK. They were in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington in 1919, she d in 1932, leaving 4 ch 6-13 years old. She was a member of Central Lutheran Church which has no older membership records. Her obit states she had two bro in Scotland (William and Henry) and that her parents were Mr.and Mrs. John ADAMSON of England. Children's birth certificates indicate her maiden name McCLELLAND and McLELLAND.

Seeking info and poss desc of Judson APPLEGATE who according to a 16 Feb 1899 issue of a Delphi, Indiana, newspaper died on 6 Feb 1899 at Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington. A Mrs. Frank KILGORE had forwarded info from "The Tacoma Daily News" to James B. SCOTT in Delphi. He was in law practice with A. R. TITLOW who was also from Delphi. Where is he buried? Judson was mar to a SCHERMERHORN who d in the 1880's.

Oscar worked as a carpenter in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington ca 1906-1910; work included interior of a Catholic Church in Tacoma before his death 19 Aug 1910; they resided at 3015 S. 12th St. Minnie disappeared shortly after his death; left 6 ch behind. Seek info on Mary Ella "Nellie" ENGLISH (b 1861 Racine, Racine Co., WI, d unknown in WA state). Her par were John Wallace ENGLISH (d 1901 Carroll Co., IA) and Jane Hannah FRY (d 1904 Carroll Co., IA). After probate was completed 1905 Nellie moved to WA state. Two of her bro and other family had already made homes in WA. Am unable to locate a death certificate for Nellie nor locate her in the counties of other relatives. One possibility is a m to Oliver COGEAN and two ch: Sallie and Joe.

OSBORNE
Seek info on John Wright OSBORNE (b 1843), burial info, desc, etc. He was a Civil War veteran with the 43rd Tennessee Infantry, an East Tennessee Conbfederate regiment. His last known address about 1922 was 1706 North Alder, Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington; from 1898 he engaged in the lumber business with nephews in Pacific Co., Washington. No death certificate is on record with the WA Department of Health.

Are records available in Sumner for contracts offered to teachers prior to 1900? My grandfather, Dow B. FOSTER, left Bloomington, Monroe Co., IN (where one child was b) for Sumner, Pierce Co., Washington, where Dow taught school and where my fa, Dale T. FOSTER was b in Oct 1896. Seek more info on Alexander ROGERS who was b in Ireland and settled in NJ before going to PA, perhaps Cumberland County; all 12 ch were b in PA: William L. (5 May 1806), Mary, Betsy, Ann, Peggy, Polly, James, Benjamin, Samuel, Robert (other birthdates unknown). William m Isabella WATTERSON, dau of Jane WILLEY; their six ch all b in PA but later moved to Peoria IL. One son, James WATTERSON ROGERS was b 7 Mar 1835, m Nancy HILL in Illinois.

Wish to contact other desc of Alexander ROGERS, b Ireland ca 1786, emigrated to NJ then moved to PA. While in NJ he m Jerusha GRAHAM; ch b in PA were: Mary, William L., Betsy, Ann, Peggy, Polly, James, Benjamin, Samuel and Robert. Son William (b 5 May 1806) m Isbella WATTERSON (b 24 Mar 1805) and had in PA: Thomas Alexander, Margaret Jane, Wesley Howe, James Watterson, Samuel Kistler and Joseph Park ROGERS. James Watterson ROGERS was b 7 Mar 1835, m Nancy Ann HILL (b 16 Jan 1841) and had the ff ch in IL bef moving to IA: Phoebe Leila, Louis Elton, David Jesse, Edwin Byrely, Frances Olive, Myrtle Mary and Charles Parke ROGERS.

My grandfather was Leonard Paul JOHNSON; he may have used Paul Leonard JOHNSON. He is believed to have served in the Army (WW II or Korea?) and d in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington 29 Dec 1969. He and Florence WILKINSON had son, Roger Paul JOHNSON. Would appreciate any information on Leonard Paul.

Need info on HALLMEYER fam; they may have had a grocery store in the McKinley Hill area in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington during the 1920's; later it was run by J. B. RIVERS, son-in-law of Martin HALLMEYER. Cannot locate HALLMEYER family in the 1920 census but my mother Anna HALLMEYER was in Tacoma in 1920. Any help appreciated.
