Our Motto:

"Liberty, Fraternity and Unity"

The USS Enterprize Chapter USD 1812 was founded on August 25, 2005 with 18 charter members. This chapter serves the City of Bremerton and the Greater Kitsap Peninsula of Washington State.

The name of the chapter is in honor of the schooner/brig USS Enterprize (sometimes spelled with a "z") that defended our country before, during and after the War of 1812.

Information about the ship USS Enterprise (Enterprize of 1799) can be found on this link:

scroll down to the picture of the Third USS Enterprise Ships, there you will find a picture of this ship included in these links.

The chapter has an ongoing patriotic project of honoring veterans of the two modern aircraft carriers also named Enterprise:

Both Enterprise carriers were overhauled in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington.

The chapter also supports the Spirit of Enterprize Tall Ship Project in Washington, DC. This tall ship will be a replica of our chapter's namesake and is being built to allow young people to experience what it was like to serve on a sailing ship during the early 1800's. See this link:

Membership in the USS Enterprize Chapter, U.S.D. 1812 provides opportunities for service in our community. Our chapter participates in projects that support veterans through donations of time and goods to the Washington Veterans Home at Retsil, Washington. We also support the annual Veterans Day Celebration at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds, carry flags in the Massing of the Colors at Fort Lewis, Washington, and host an entry in the annual Armed Forces Day Parade in Bremerton, Washington.

Parade

An 1812 era naval officer uniform was created under the direction of a USS Enterprize Chapter member, to represent Lt. Edward McCall, who was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for bringing the battle, USS Enterprize vs. HMS Boxer, to a victorious close, on August 5, 1813. This uniform is worn by a male volunteer at special chapter events like the parade.

The chapter rewards patriotism and good citizenship by presenting U.S.D. 1812 JROTC Bronze Medals each spring to the following local units:

South Kitsap High School, NJROTC, Port Orchard, Washington
Bremerton High School, NJROTC, Bremerton, Washington
Kitsap Battalion of the Sea Cadet Corps, Keyport, Washington
Shelton High School, NJROTC, Shelton, Washington

The chapter places educational displays in local libraries to commemorate historical events from the War of 1812. The display at the left was for the 75th anniversary of the acceptance by Congress of the Star Spangled Banner as our National Anthem (March 3, 2006).

The chapter also maintains good public relations with the community by supporting events like the annual Festival of the Trees sponsored by the Harrison Hospital Foundation, by donating stuffed toys to the Celebrate the Children's Tree. These toys are distributed to children as comfort items in our local hospitals and emergency rooms.
Our chapter meetings have programs that focus on the history of the War of 1812 and our chapter business focuses on creative ways to support the society's National Committees. Recruiting new members is always a high priority and allows us to share and improve our skills in genealogical research.
