BRIEN
30 April 1998 Sally Lyback Maitland norskhus@upstel.net
I am seeking information on my grandfather Edward
Andrew Brien
(Brennen?)'s family in Norway. Edward Andrew
Brien was born December 22, 1872 in Nicollet County, MN.
Died October 2, 1937 in San Haven, Dunseth, ND. He was
married to Mary Johannah Gunderson October 2, 1897 and
they resided at Pelican Rapids, MN. They had five
children: George, Earl, Walter, Clifford, and Mabel.
- I believe Edward Andrew Brien had two sisters, Bessie
and Julia (married to Edward Tinglestead) and a brother
Elmer who left home at an early age -- last heard of in
Canada?? There may have also been some half sisters.
- I believe Edward Andrew Brien came from Norway but I do
not know where or in what year. If anyone has any
information, no matter how small, I would appreciate it.
Thank you.

Emmrud/Emrud/Emmerud
27 Apr 1998
My grandmother Gundrun Emrud was born in Sigdahl Parish
in 1856. She had a brother and a sister who immigrated to
North Dakota in the 1880s other relatives of her fathers
family had immigrated to Waseca, Minnesota. Gundrun also
had a sister who eventually settled in Wannamingo,
Minnesota with her husband. That family took the surname
Sievertson. One of the Sievertson daughters resided in
Wannamingo in the middle 1950s.
The descendants of Gundruns brother believed to have
lived near Turtle Lake N.D. and used the name Emery
derived from an Anglicization of Emrud. There were
several Emery children and I am looking for descendants.
Gundrun also had a sister who settled with her husband in
North Dakota. That family's ultimate surname is unknown
to Gundrun Emrud's descendants though we do have pictures
of them taken at a wedding in North Dakota. The name
Emrud comes from the farm which the family owned for
several generations. One brother remained in Norway and
had two daughters who lived in the Sigdahl area. One
daughter at least surviving into the 1950s.The other
daughter in Norway was married to a man with the surname
Ouslaug and lived somewhere near Sigdahl. I am looking
for descendants of Gundrun Emrud's siblings. I have
genealogical information in some lines back to the 1400s
which I would share. Perhaps other descendants from the
North Dakota siblings are out there in cyberspace.
Gundruns father's name was Jon so some family members
used the patronymic Jonsen spelled in a variety of ways.
I am waiting to hear. email: markk3@ix.netcom.com

entered the states they either went to MN or WI. Most of
the children were born in WI on the MN border.

7, 1862. We think his father's name was Ole Aune who
had three step-brothers, George Gunnar Aune, Peter (Per)
Aune and Eric Aune. Ole's mother's name was Magnild. Can
you give me a route to take when researching this
ancester? We had always heard that the name of these
relatives was Olson until they came to the USA and there
were so many Olsons that they changed their name to Aune.
However, since there seem to be Ole's brothers who stayed
in Norway and still have the name of Aune, this does not
seem to be the case. Thank You for your assistance, Jane

SKAVOLDEN FARM
16 Apr 1998 - sej@keynet.net
I am looking for information on the Skavolden Farm and
Alstahaug Parrish relatives named Syver Anderson
Skavolden (born 1816 to father Anders Syverson and mother
?) and married on May 3, 1840 to Marit Andersdatter (born
1822 to father Anders Anderson and mother ?) My great
great grandfather on my mother's side was Andreas
Anderson Skavolden who was five when the family emigrated
to the U.S. in 1850. He later became the naturalized
Henry S. Anderson of Park River, North Dakota. The family
left from Valdres in 1850, all except for a daughter
Guri, who was eight at the time, and no records exist
that tell us why she was left behind or what happened to
her. I would appreciate any help on locating records for
any of these family members. I have help on the U.S.
Henry S. Anderson side, but no way to extract information
on the Norwegian side. Thank you for any help provided.

SKAVOLDEN-ANDERSDATTER
16 Apr 1998 sej@keynet.net
My great great grandparents were Syver Anderson
Skavolden and Marit Andersdatter
who were married on May 3, 1840, when he was 24 (born in
1816) and she was 18 (born in 1822), and they lived on
the Skavolden Farm in Nordland County, in the district of
the Alstahaug Parrish. Marit's father was Anders
Anderson. I am trying to locate information on Marit's
mother and both sets of her grandparents and also on
Syver's parents and his grandparents. The spelling of
Anderson may have been changed from Andersen when they
emigrated to the United States in 1850 with four of their
five children. We have been unable to find out what
happened to the only girl of Syver and Marit, Guri, who
was eight years old at the time they left, as she did not
leave with them. My mother's grandfather, Andreas
Skavolden, and who later became the naturalized Henry S.
Anderson, was born on December 16, 1845, I believe at the
Skavolden Farm, and he was five years old when they
emigrated to the U.S. Any help in locating information
about this Norwegian part of my family would be greatly
appreciated. They left from Valdres, which is where they
were supposed to have relatives, but I don't know from
which side of the family (Syver's or Marits.)
Thank you for any and all help.

OPSAHL
14 Apr 1998
My name is James Opsahl. I currently reside in the United
States. My grandfather settled in northwestern Minnesota.
The small town of Oklee, to be exact. I
just need to know about any Opsahl's
from Norway who settled in northwestern Minnesota in the
late 1800's- early 1900's. I know that the results may be
extensive, because Opsahl is synonymous with North
Dakota/ Minnesota/ Wisconsin, but any response would be
appreciated.
What part of Norway did the Opsahl's who navigated to the
northwestern part of Minnesota come from? If Oklee,
Minnesota could be pinpointed, that would be a godsend.
But that area of Minnesota in general is great. Thank
you,

LUGUSET/LANSETH
11 Apr 1998 - cthomto@ibm.net
I am trying to find information on Emelia Nilsdtr
born 10 March 1853 in Norway. When she came to America in
1881 she took the name of Luguset
sometimes called Lanseth but records of
her marriage to Lars Hannem in
Campbridge Wisconsin USA it is shown as Luguset. Her
father's name was Nils Eriksen Luguset
and her mother's name was Berit Torgerdsdatter.
She probably had lived near the groom in Norway as they
married shortly after she came, Oct 28, 1882. Lars had
lived on the Skar farm but he dropped
the Skar reference and went be Lars Eriksen.
We have since found that a son that came with her was
born March 31, 1873 in Norway and was named Nels Anton
Nelson. No father was named. Can anyone locate
information on her in the records of Norway. More
information on where she was born, and farm she lived on
when she had her child as well as the church parish where
she was born? Sometimes she made reference to Ness Norway
as though she was familiar with that area. Thank you for
any help you can give us.

WIDTSOE/GAARDEN
3 Apr 1998
WIDTSOE/GAARDEN from the island of Froya, near Trondheim.
I am looking for anyone related to John Andreas
Widtsoe (b 31 Jan 1872). He is the son of John
Anderson Widtsoe of Trondheim and Anne Karine Gaarden of
Froya.
My name is Kari Robinson and I am the oldest great
granddaughter of John Andreas Widtsoe,
born on the island of Froya in 1872. In about 1880, he
along with his older brother (Aasbjorn), mother (Anne
Karine Pedersen Gaarden) and Aunt (Petroline Jorgine
Pedersen Gaarden) immigrated to the USA in 1880, settling
in Logan, Utah. (His father 'John Andersen Widtsoe'-a
teacher- had recently died in Namsos). John went on to
attend Harvard University graduating cum laude and summa
cum laude in the same year in Chemistry. He was
internationally known as a chemist and for his work with
irrigation. He maintained his Norwegian identity and
proudly passed it on to his descendants. I also lived in
Norway for 18 months (in the mid 1970's)and became fluent
in Norwegian (mostly the vestland dialect) - most of
which I have managed to retain. I have gathered most of
his genealogy - both descendants and ancestors - which I
am willing to share if anyone is looking. I'd love to
find some more "cousins" as well. I know of
some relatives in Trondheim. The main areas of this
family are the island of Froya and the area south of
Trondheim known as Orkdal, Meldal, etc. Some of the main
family/farm names (in these two areas) are: Gaarden,
Svorkdal, Svorkaas, Graven, Atvending, Widtsoe, Dordal,
and a few more. karimom@juno.com

November 21, 1862 in 1888 or 1889. She may be from the
same area, since he supposedly sent for her. Any
information on either of these individuals and their
ancestors would be greatly appreciated. I have
information on their children and their life in Canada
after 1903 for anyone interested. Thank you.

HOFLAND/FALKEN -1 Apr 1998 MinnieKiss@aol.com
I am searching on information on the Hofland or Falken
family that came from Norway to the United States in the
late 1800's. My grandfather was born to Christ W. Hofland
born 5/4/1879 and Jorgina (Seim) born 12/20/1885.
Christ's parents were Ole and Brita (Christoffersdatter)
Hofland. Ole Hofland was born 1846 and Brita was born in
1850 both in Norway. My grandmother was born to Knute
Falken born 9/9/1885 and Gena (Bren) born 3/12/1892.
Knute's parents were John and Oleina (Thompson) Falken.
John was born in 1852 and Olenia was born in 1858 both in
Norway. Any information that you might have to complete
this picture would be greatly appreciated.

first child EMMA was born in Woodville in St Croix Co.
Wi. They came here in 1889 and was naturalized in 1892
according to the census. They moved from Woodville to
Hanah ND. That's about all I know about them before my
