Kristensen
and Hansen - sid_norman@bc.sympatico.ca
I am doing some research into my Norwegian background on
my Mother's side of the family. I know my Grandfather was
born in Norway and believe he came from Moss and my G.
Mother I am quite sure came from Holmestrand. I do not
know where they were married but I do believe they were
married in Holmestrand around 1893 ish, as the oldest
child was born in 1894. My G. Mother had one child before
she married my G. Father, the child's name was Julius
Hansen. He was born on Jan 29, 1890. Again I
believe he was born in Holmestrand. Also their first
child was a son by the name of Arnt Frederik
Karlsen. He was born on Oct. 24, 1894. I believe
was born in Holmestrand as I have been unable to find his
birth in Moss. I have found a total of eight children
that my Grandparents had before leaving Norway in 1906 to
come to North American. I have resently found out that
there was one more child born in 1902 in Moss that did
not survive. They ended up residing in the USA for a
short period of time where one more child was born before
coming to Saskatchewan, Canada to homestead and farm. One
further child was born in Saskatchewan. This last child
was my Mother. This would bring the total number of
children to 12 counting Julius. Julius also came to
Canada but he did not come with the rest of the family. I
suspect he was 16 years old at the time and therefore
would have been required to go into the service (I think)
for two years. (Most likely the navy or merchant navy.)
At present I have not been able to find his record to
confirm this fact, nor have I found the date when he
exited Norway. My G. Mother's name was Julie Margrethe
Kristensen, she was born on Dec 1, 1866 and my G.
Father's name was Olaf Karlsen and he was born on Sept
25, 1869. Olaf had at least two other brothers and one
sister. Their names were: Hans, born in 1859, Otto and
Louise. I also know that Julie Margrethe had at least one
brother by the name of Herman Kristensen.
Now, knowing the above information, what I would like to
know is: Have the records for the Holmestrand area for
this period survived? And if so, how do I go about
finding them so I can do some searching. Or is there
someone that would be willing to do some look ups for me
(at a reasonable cost.) Also can you confirm that Naval
or Merchant service was required at age 16 for all youths
born in this period. Thank you very much for taking the
time to help me out.

MOURSUND
29 Aug 1998 Edward A. Scriven scriv@slkc.uswest.net
I am looking for the birth/christening of Jonetta
Andrea MOURSUND. Christening date we were given
is 21 Jul 1768 in Troms County. There is a place name
Moursund or Maursund in Skjervoy parish, but I could not
find her christening on the parish record. I have no
guarantee it is supposed to be in that parish or that the
date is right. Her father was Anders Nilsen
MOURSUND, and her mother was Jonette Jonsdatter
ROST. I have researched other ROST relatives in Skjervoy
parish, so I expect this should be the place for the
christening to appear. She married Jonas Cornelius FALCK
on 5 Oct 1814 in Hadsel, Nordland County, and died 6 Sep
1831 in Trondheim. Thanks for any help, Ed Scriven

Anders parents, etc.
Also an older relative visited Norway in 1975 and visited
the the Nordehov Parish Grounds. Per conversation with a
Mr. Arne B. Bang, who was the Chairman of the Ringerike

to her. He was a descendant of Olea Larsdatter who
married Ole Larson Sunlokken. A geneology had been put
together in Norway on this, but Deloris Nerison Meader
passed away before any communication could insue. Anyone

Greetings from Florida U.S.A. My name is Egil Arnt
Voreland. I was born in Kristiansand Norway July 17,1939.
I still have alot of cousins & aunts over there but
all my uncles are gone. No one has any interest in
genealogy, so perhaps I should look into it for the
family, but I don't know where to begin. I speak
Norwegian, but my spelling is "forferdelg". It
would be really neat to hear from you. P.S, I came to
America at the age of fifteen, and am now a ripe age of
58. Hope to hear from you. Searching for roots, Egil
(Bud) nanafar@sunnyfl.net
Thanks again, Egil Voreland. P.S, My family farm was in
Vennesla, just north of Kristiansand.

Kristian
Evensen Saksvik, aka Skogstad, aka Skokstad
11 Aug 1998
My uncle Kristian Evensen Saksvik, born September 25,
1883 in Malvik, Norway, one of five children of Even
Eriksen Krogstad Saksvik and Hanna Kristensdatter Saksvik
who owned the Saksvik (Upper) farm in Malvik, emigrated
to North America in 1907. After searching USA with no
results, a search of probate records for 1921 in Norway
when his father died, it came to light that Kristian's
address in or before 1921 was the West Hotel, 444 Carrall
Street in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. The West Hotel in the
early 1920's was the home away from home for Scandinavian
loggers and construction worker in the off season.
Unsubstantiated information from Norway believe Kristian
might have died in the mid 1950's. Anyone with further
information, please advise by E-mail to persaxvik@classic.msn.com
Thank You, Per Saxvik

NILSDATTER
10 Aug 1998 Amy Hutto ahutto@gte.net
Elen Nilsdatter was a sister of Ingeborg
Nilsdatter Børsetbrekken (b. 1844 d. 1875) and
lived at Simonhjell together with her brother Lars (b.
1851 d. 1915) who owned the farm. Their father's name was
Nils J. Borset. I am looking for
siblings, specifically Halvor (male) Eli (female) and
Marit (may have left in 1882) that supposedly immigrated
to the United States. The only proof I have that they
even existed was a letter from Elen while she was still
living at Simonhjel and a recent letter from a woman in
Norway that told me Elen eventually married ? Kvendset
and moved to Nesset in Romsdal. Any leads no matter how
vague would be a start. Thank you, Amy Hutto
