ROE
28 Feb 1998
Related farm names: Arnegard, Roehaugen,
Rakelgarden,Rakelfarm
I have a lengthy document written by Kjell Sorbol of
Norway in 1984. This book traces the Genealogy of the ROE
name from Torstein Knutson. Speaks of
Knut Torsteinson (Roe) born Nov. 4, 1791 who was raised
on Roehaugen. This farm may have also
previously known as Arnegard. Knut Torsteinson was the
son of Torstein Knutson(born 1760 , died July 26, 1837).
From what I can tell their are two farms involved 1)
Arnegard or Roehaugen and 2) Rakelgarden or Rakelfarm. I
may be of some help as I can find very little about the
Roe family or the location of Norway where these farms
were/are located. I have a picture of the farm entitled
"Aettegardern Roe, gnr. 46, bnr. 12". Thanks,
Steve Roe

JOHNSON
28 FEB 1998 Heather L. Rankin proquest@page.az.net
Looking for information on the following ancestors.
Andrew JOHNSON was born in 25 July 1825 in Christianna,
Norway. The IGI lists his father as Rasmus and his mother
as Hockin. I have not verified this yet. Andrew moved his
family to Peterson, Morgan, Utah in 1860. He was possibly
in the Budge Handcart company. He married Maria Agusta
CHRISTIANSEN born 1829 in Norway.
They had the following children:
Agnes Johnson born Oct 1848 in Christiana (Oslo) Norway
Julia Johnson born 16 May 1851 in Christiana (Oslo)
Norway.
The two sisters married two GAARDER (Garder) brothers.
Agnes married Ole Olsen Gorder (Gaarder) Jr.
Julia married Martin Garder (Gaarder)
Family history has it that the girls (Agnes and Julia)
met the GAARDER (Gorder) brothers (Ole and Martin) in
Omaha Nebraska and walked across the plains with them
when Agnes was 11 years old. All the children of the two
families thought it was a great adventure but knew it was
probably very hard on the parents. Any help on this
family will be most appreciated. Heather

GAARDER
28 Feb 1998 Heather L. Rankin proquest@page.az.net
Hi. Looking for any information on the following family:
Ole Olsen Gaarder born about 1818 in Bangs, Lodingen,
Norlands, Norway married Anne Mickolsen before 1843. She
was born about 1820, probably in Lodingen.
They had the following children:
Ole Olsen Gorder, Jr. born 3 June 1844 in Bangs.
Martin Gaarder (Garder) born 25 Nov 1849 in Bangs.
Andrew Gaarder born 1843 in Bangs, Lodingen, Norlands,
Norway
Laurtiz Gaarder born 1858 in Norway.
Karen Gaarder born 1843 in Norway.
Family history has it that their last name was not
Gaarder, Garder or Gorder but Olsen. On the ship coming
to America they were asked to pick a last name that was
not Olsen.
They left Norway in 1860 on the ship William Tapscott and
docked in New York. From there they went to Omaha. In
Omaha they joined the Budge hand-cart company that went
to Utah. They settled in Peterson, Morgan, Utah. I have
quite a bit of info on this family I would love to share.
Any help will be most appreciated. Cheers! Heather Rankin

OSTHAGEN/ANDERSEN
16 Feb 1998
We are of Norwegian descent and are taking a trip to
Norway in July of this year. We would like to contact and
meet with descendents of those of our family who remained
in Norway.
Our grandfather was August Osthagen. We
remember from conversation, that his family emigrated
from Norway in 1877 or 1878 and know little of those who
remained in Norway. Our grandmother was Thora Andersen
( or possibly Andresen ) who came to the USA in 1887 and
was married to August about 1888 or 89. She maintained
correspondence, over the years until her death in 1939 or
40, with a person that we believe was sister. Her address
as best we can remember it was:
Fro Marta Gloppe
#1 Harbitz Gade
Oslo, Norway
On her only visit to Norway in 1937 she was met at the
ship by her nephews. Probably the sons of her sister. Any
help you may be able to give us in contacting the
descendents of these people would be greatly appreciated.
----My name is Bob Norton, and any help you may be able
to give my parents in either finding descendents or how
to go about it would be greatly appreciated. My parents
are in their late 70's & early 80's and meeting any
relatives would make their trip memorable. Thank you for
your time. Bob Norton - wunicorn@swbell.com

Looking for NIKOLAISEN Relatives in USA 15
Feb 1998
My name is Terje Nikolaisen. We are looking for relatives
in USA, maybe in Canada. We don't know how many people in
USA, which are using "Nikolaisen"
as last name.? Our family "Nikolaisen" lives in
in the north of Norway. Since spring time we are looking
for any information about our relatives in USA. My
father's uncle immigrated to the USA. We got information
from his brother, few years ago (my grandfather). The
person we are looking for is my grandfather's brother;
His name is
"SIGURD ANDREAS NIKOLAISEN, maybe called SEGURD,
born 11.10.1889". He went for USA. Nikolaisen is an
uncommon name in USA, and maybe he changed his lastname
for ex. "Nikolson or Nicholson".
My grandfather was born
1891, and was his best friend. My grandfather told that
the family in Norway only received two letters, or
postcard from him after he left Norway. The information
says that he married in USA. They try, but didn't get any
contact with him, maybe he leave and settled in another
states in USA.
We don't get his
address where he lived when he came over there, and
nobody from our district have any information about him.
Can you please tell us where we can get any information
about our relatives in USA. We will be pleased for any
information we can get about him, or any relatives being
descended from him. Thanks! Your sincerely, Terje
Nikolaisen

FAGERLIE
14 Feb 1998
Marie Margrethe Fagerlie was born April
10, 1871 of parents Lemming Lemingson Fagerlie and
Mildred Olsdaughter Aspaas, both of the
congregation of Tingvold Congregation but moved to
Christiansund where Marie was born. She lost her father
when she was 6 years and 1 month old.(May 1877) and her
mother died when she was nine years and 9 months
(December?1880) She then came to the home of her fathers
sister (who eventually would move to Northport, Michigan)
Elizabeth Moe. She was then in the house of another one
of her father's sisters, Marit Haagensen, where she
stayed for ten years. .At 18 years of age, she came to
America and again lived with her aunt Elizabeth in the
year 1889. She would marry Daniel Johnson in 1892 in
Suttons Bay, Michigan. She received several letters from
Elen Borseth of the farm Simonskjel. Elen spoke of her
brother, Lars, who worked himself to death on the farm.
She later writes of losing the farm to debt. It is never
clear what relation Elen is to Marie and she put no
return address on her envelopes. Any information, no
matter how minor, would be deeply appreciated. ahutto@gte.net

IVERSEN
13 Feb 1998
I am seeking info on my father's family. Family name is Iversen.
The easiest research resources have all succumbed to the
final result and I am limited to some very basic
information.
My grandfather emigrated to the US from Lillehamer and
settled in Billerica, Massachusetts in the early part of
this century (circa 1910?).I do not know his first name
or my grandmother's name but she was also of Norwegian
ancestry. The area was well known as a textile production
area and has attracted immigrants for many years. I know
that there are relatives still living in Lillehamer, but
do not know how to find them. My father, who died in
1956, in Tewksbury, MA was known as Paul Iversen and was
born in 1922. There were at least 9 sons born to my
grandfather, here in the US.(unfortunately, all dead
now). Any kind of jumpstart or guidance on this research
would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

BEITSTAD
9 Feb 1998
I'm compiling a micro-history of the emigration of people
from Beitstad (en) in Steinkjer co.(the
capital of NorthTrondelag). I hope to produce an
easy-read narrative that will be of interest to folks who
have a common anscestry. The Beitstadboka has been a
valuable source of determining how various Surnames
(Patrinymic, Farm, and otherwise) are connected. My
challenge has been to get that late 19th and early 20th
century history connected to their living descendents.
- - If anyone has known connections to Beitstad
or suspects they might have, I welcome a response. Here
is a list of some farm names I'm working with from there:
Hammer, Rones, Skevik, Grandhus, Bartnes, Lia, Hollia,
Stamnes, Rennan, Elnan, Viset, Holmfet, Brekka, Kjellset,
Tekset, Utvik, Benan, Tessem, Bardal, Hammeren, Overrein,
Dalekra, Gulung, Vesterhus, Hervik, Melhus, Lo, &
Tekset. Of course the English derivation of some of these
might be quite different, e.g., Kjellset became Chelseth,
Tekset became texeth. Regards, Tom Rones

I am looking for Aagot Haugen or Haugens who was alive in
1960. She lived in the village of Lysaker and wrote a
letter to my great-grandfather Morten Iversen. He had
passed away prior to the arrival of the letter, but my
family never replied to the letter. I know that she
worked for A.F. Klaveness & Co. who is a shipbuilder
in Norway. Does anyone have any idea how to find the
person? I have looked for the company, but I have heard
reports that it doesn't exist anymore. I would appreciate

BORRESON
3 Feb 1998
I am attempting to gather some information on my father's
roots in Norway. My father was named John Borreson and
was born in Stavanger, Norway on August 23, 1888. His
father's name was John Borreson and his mother was Bertha
Sunde. He had 2 sisters, names unknown. When he was about
15 years old (probably in 1903) he migrated to the United
States where he met an uncle (name unknown) and
apparently settled down in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He
served in a Medical Detachment in the US Army during
World War 1. His dates of service was from Dec 17, 1917
to Dec. 27, 1918. After discharge he went back to
Minneapolis. He was married twice. His 2nd wife was my
mother, Florence Palmer. I and my brother, John, Jr were
born in Minneapolis in 1936 & 1940 respectively.
Shortly thereafter we moved to Seattle, Wa where my
younger brother, Bernie was born in 1944. It was about
this time that my father changed the spelling of our name
from Borreson to Burreson. He died in 1966 in Seattle. I
would like to get any information on my grandparents and
other kin in Norway. Beatrice (Burreson) Abel

BIRKENES
1 Feb 1998 Arden J. Olson arden.j.olson@harrang.com
I am interested in any information relating to Sjur Olsen
"Birkenes" (b-1678, d-1767), who inherited the
Nigarn farm on Birkenes Hill north of Etne, Norway.
According to military recruiting records, the farm was
previously owned by Haken Olsen and Aldvard Siffuersen,
the latter of whom may have been Sjur Olsen's
grandfather. Siffuersen was also the sheriff of Etne from
1650 to 1677, as his father Siffuer had been from 1627 to
1650. My particular interest is in the link(s) between
Siffuerson and Olsen, whether they were in fact related,
and who Olsen's father may have been. Thank you for any
assistance.

TRANBERG 1 Feb 1998
I'm looking for information concerning Fredrich Ambrosius
Tranberg born 1738. Tonight I found that Tranberg was a
farm in the 1801 census!
John Jacob Dronenburg / Dronenberger / (Marriage
Lic-Tromberber), b 1775, married Anna Maria Magdalena
Madery/Madera/Madiera, (b 1 Oct, 1780 in Fredrick Co. MA;
d 10 Mar, 1864 at Zion Parish MA ,) on 20 Oct 1801 at the
Maderia home near the Amelung Glass House near New
Bremen, MA (My comment: this is only 20-30 minutes drive
from Fredrick MA)
Son Henry G., b 11 Apr, 1807 had two sons (William &
Vernon) who were very colorful; both fought in the Civil
War. They lived in Tuscorara (near Urbana) on the
Potomac, just 20 minutes south of Fredrick, MA. He was a
blacksmith. Sons may have been military blacksmiths.
The confederate calvaryman, William, later lived (and
died) in Missouri. He is in
my great great grandfather. His Daughter Eve was my Great
Grandmother. The yankee calvaryman (Vernon) was later
with units that fought with Custer a the Little Big Horn.
He deserted after the battle and settled in Missouri. He
applied for a pension as a Civil War Veteran (no
computers to cross-reference for desertion back then.) My
dad is going to visit his gravesite this winter.
I found the house that they grew up in, on the Potomac,
about 5 years ago. It is deserted and has farm debris
piled up around it. Dad has one of the bricks. I was last
in the house in October, 1997.
Going Back from the ancestor at the beginning of this
message, ie John Jacob Dronenburg:
His Father: Johann Jacob Tranberg / Trondbarger /
Throndbarger / Thrandberger b 1753 near Littlestown PA; d
1800-1811 near Silver Run MA; Residence Weaver married
Regina Margaretha Lemon b ?? near Silver Run MA
His Father Fredrich Ambrosius Tranberg b 1738 arrived at
Philadelphia on the Ship Winter Galley from Rotterdam. My
sources say the name was Swedish (possibly from Swedes
living in Germany after the 30 years war (my comment.)).
Also possibly a religious refugee. Lived in Mannheim
Twsp. York Co. PA. Married Eva Maria Magdalena Wittmer at
Lancaster PA on 25 Nov, 1739. I am currently researching
the Winter Galley.
