RAILAN
26 Sep 1998 AliceLRobertson@Worldnet.att.net
The name attached to Anders Stephensen is
Railan and I don't know if that is a farm name
in Finland or Norway - or a village or family name. I've
searched the web to the best of my ability, but don't
find it. Since he was born in Norway abt 1688 and died in
Eidskog, Hedmark in 1762, I may know all that I will know
about him other than his marriage and children. Thanks.

SANDMARK
- HYGGEN 26 Sep 1998
I was told that in 1906 Ole Andreas Pettersen
Sandmark and Martha (Hoiby) Bjornsdatter
who were tenant farmers, purchased the farm HYGGEN. Their
youngest son, Edvard (born in 1907) bought the farm in
1944. Edvard married Gudrun Larsen. This is all I know
and I don't know the location or if this is correct.
Would like to verify information and learn more. Thank
you. by Deanne V. Rowen at vanbrow3@sullybuttes.net

ROANPAA
- PUDAS 26 Sep 1998 SCSMARK@ix.netcom.com
I am trying to find Isak Roanpaa's
parents names. He married Maria Pudas in
Vadso Norway 1840. They had three children. Juho/Johan
Roanpaa, Isak William Roanpaa, And Henrik Vilhelm
Roanpaa. Maria Pudas was from Matarengi Sweden. The dates
of birth for the sons are Johan Roanpaa, b. 1849 in
Vesesaari (vadso). Isak William, b.November 24,1844, And
Henrik Vilhelm, b. November 28, 1855. Juho was a Minister
and is mentioned in a self published book by Uuras
Saarnivaara called the history of the Laestadian. The
name Tornio comes up as the place of birth for Isak
Roanpaa. I'm not sure. The surnames of Rovanpaa and
Roambe also come up. I know the migrated to Calumet,
Michigan when they were older. This is where Roambe comes
in. Isak (50), wife Marie (60). but I am not sure if this
is them. This is all the information I have. If I could
find the names of Isak Roanpaa's parents that would be
very helpful. Thank you for your time in this matter.

I am looking for
information about any person(s) with the last name FOSS.

resides in Frontier and farms. Any information about this
would be greatly appreciated, for I am just starting out
and really do not know where to begin. Thanks, Brandi

KIRKEIDE
23 Sept 1998 Richard M. Myhre rmyhre@aol.com
John Johanneson Kirkeide was born
08/04/1863 at Stryn, Nordfjord, Norway to Johannes
Ellingson Kirkeide and Karoline Jensdatter Stauri.
Johannes Ellingson Kirkeide was born in 1830 at Stryn,
Nordfjord, Norway and died1885 at age 65. Karoline was
born in 1820 and died at age 56 in 1876.
Kirkeide is the name of a "Gard" or farm in the
valley of Stryn in Nordfsord, Norway. For more than 300
years it has been operated by an unbroken succession of
father to son. The name is derived from EIDE, a neck of
land, and KIRKE, a church, there have been several
churches on this site. The present church was built in
1854.
This information was obtained in 1973 by Helmer M.
Blegen, a language professor at a college in Souix
Falls,SD and a cousin by marriage to children Of John. I
have the names of the people that managed the farm from
1716 to the one that took over in 1914. I don't have the
name of the son that was managing the farm in 1973. I
have a complete list of John Johanneson Kirkeide
descendents in the USA. I would be very interested in
contacting any of the people that were connected to the
GARD & sharing USA information with them or anyone
having information of the life & times of earlier
yrs. in Norway

TUFTE
23 SEPT 1998 Richard Myhre rmyhre@aol.com
Margit Tufte was the daughter of Ole
Ellingson Tufte & Margit Nestegard,
born 7/24/1871. She came to America with her father &
6 siblings, her mother had died in Norway, when she was 4
yrs.old.
Margit was baptized at Hal Gamle Kyrkge, Hol, Hollingdal,
Norway. That church was built in 1214.
Margit first married my grandfather Knut O. Myhre
and after his death she married Evan S. Medhus 8/14/1899
& they had 5 children. Life was hard on the ND.
Prairie & I'm sure that her family that lived near
her helped with whatever had to be done. I think my
grandfather was a person that did not take family
responsibilities very seriously. In those days trips to
Norway were not an overnight thing & probably took
several months each way.
Any information on any of the families mentioned would be
appreciated. I have much info.of the history in the USA
& would be glad to hear from anyone with any
knowledge of the Norway connection & would be happy
to share any information.

Tresfjord,Norway. He was the son of Erich
Erichsen Kjøbstad & Inger
Ottesdatter Skorgenes. They never married so
Knut was raised by the husmenfolk Knut & Marit
Raknem.

born 03/29/1822 at the Bortigarden farm on Skeide. She
was christened at Voll church. Her parents were Jacob

& would like further info. on life & times of
people living on the Berild farm prior to & after the
yrs. mentioned. I have birth & death dates &
addresses for most of the descendents in the USA. Chester

perhaps we could catch up on more recent events in the
lives of any descendents still living in Norway.

OLSEN
20 Sept 1998 BunnybyK@aol.com
I'm looking for information on my great grandfather Alfred
Olsen and his son Peter Olsen.
I don't really have anything to go on with Alfred but his
name. Peter was born in 1848 and left Norway in or about
1886-1887. He settled in Michigan and owned a farm there.
He married a Martha Iverson also from
Norway but I don't know if they were married in Norway or
America. Her father's name was Ivor Iverson.
But I don't know where any of these people actually lived
in Norway. I thought I was told around Oslo but I really
don't know. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

SKRADE
17 Sep 1998 jds519@hotmail.com
I'm interested in knowing the background of my name and
family. My last name is "Skrade," and I'm aware
that it is extremely rare. I've seen one variation on
it--"Skradee." It is pronounced SKRAY DEE. My
family is not a very close one. We can be found (all 30
or so of us) scattered around the states of Wisconsin,
Illinois, Iowa, and Ohio. My grandmother died almost five
years ago, and my grandfather died when my father was
twelve. Not much is known about us, and recently it has
been driving me crazy with having such a unique name and
not knowing it's history. As I said, my family is not
close at all which leaves me nowhere to go. Thanks-
Sincerely, Jess Skrade

Ole Brenna emigrated from Norway about 1875. His father's
name was Helge Brenna, born August 10,1814. Ole, according
to a handwritten note I have about his 50th Wedding
Anniversary, ..."was born at Brenna, Opheinasgrendin

birth was February 2, 1848.
QUESTIONS: 1. Who were Helge's parents?
2.What was his wife's name?
3. Where, in Norway, did Helge, his parents and Ole live?
Ole Brenna's wife's name was Kari Berg and they were
married in Minnesota about 1877. She was also born in
Norway on April 14, 1856. How can I research the same
questions about Kari as above about Brenna's?

OLSON -
BONDERUD (Bonderud/Toten) 8
Sep 1998 brian.bjorgo@gte.net
The farm name and parish listed are of my mother's
father's birthplace according to what records I have been
able to find from corresponding with other relatives. My
grandfather and his four brothers last name was Olson
when they emigrated to the US in 1884, but changed their
last name to Bonderud at that time apparently due to the
numerous Olson families entering at that time from
Norway. I note that their father's name was Ole so using
the method of last names in Norway, the brothers last
name became Olson.
. . . Having scanned your list of parishes and farms, I
do not see the Bonderud name listed. Is
there no record of such a farm name in Toten, Norway?
Separately I shall enter my surname of Bjorgo, that is
not a farm name however, but a place named "Bjorgo
Station" which still existed until several years ago
and is supposedly located in North Surdal, Norway. I have
a photograph of a building which apparently is a railroad
station with that title on the building. Also, pictures
were given to me of the cemetery headstones of my
great-grandfather and great-grandmother near that
building. I
have no other information on the area/community by the
name of Bjorgo. My e-mail address is: brian.bjorgo@gte.net
Thank you. Brian Bjorgo

BAKKEN/OLSON
-- 5 Sep 1998 glennn@bitstream.net
I am looking for a family I believe has the last name of
BAKKEN.
1) Andreas Halvorsen was born 18 March
1846 (Bjorgum from Lange Drag) - he married Andrea
Olsdatter OPPEN on 30 October 1874 in Nord
Aurdal, Valdres, Norway. Andrea was born on 2 February
1848 in Nord Aurdal to my great-great grandparents, Ole
Christensen and Anne Knudsdatter. Andreas and Andrea had
2 children (that I know of) -- Ole, born 1875 and Guri,
born 1877. According to the 1875 Census, Ole and Anne
were living with Andreas and Andrea - farm OPPENBAKKEN.
Ole and Anne died in 1887 and I find Andrea O.
BAKKEN living with her brother, Halvor Olson in
Steele County, Minnesota in 1905. She was 56. According
to a couple of obituaries, I have a mention of Mrs.
Harvey Bakken of Minneapolis in 1923 and a Miss Agnes
Bakken of Duluth in 1929.
2) Andrea also had a sister named Kari
(born 1854) married to Thore Amundson MANUM
in 1877. Thore was born in 1850 in Nord Aurdal. Thore and
Kari are listed in the Steele County, Minnesota Census of
1880 as Omundson - church records indicate Olson. They
had 3 children - Ingebor (1877 - born Nord Aurdal), Anna
(1879 - born Steele County, MN) and Ovidea Caroline (1881
- born Steele County) - they left Steele County,
Minnesota in 1882 according to the church records.
Can anyone direct me to something more concrete on this
for either of these families? Thank you for your help and
cooperation...Please e-mail me at glennn@bitstream.net
