Thompson, E. R., real estate dealer and county auditor - Cresco (Iowa) - born 9 Aug 1854, in Stod, Trondhjem stift, Norway. After having received a common school education i his native land, he emigrated in 1872, coming directly to Winneshiek county, Iowa, where he remained for two years, working on farms and attending school; then moved to Cresco, where he clerked and kept books for three years; worked in an abstract office for the same length of time; served as deputy auditor for a couple of years. In 1886 he was appointed assistant cashier of the Bank of Cresco, and in 1887 he was elected, on the Republican ticket, auditor of Howard county and secretary of the county board of education, which positions he occupied for five years, being about the only Scandinavian in the county who has held any important political office. He has also been a member of the Cresco school board for several years. In 1893 Thompson started an abstract business, at the same time dealing in real estate and insurance. he is a member of the United Norwegian Lutheran Church; was married to Julia Solberg, of Emmett county, in 1881. They have four children.
