Town of Armenia, Armenia Norwegian
Some of the first settlers in the Town of Armenia were Norwegian immigrants. Because of the distance and
difficulty in travel, only on special occassions were the familes able to attend services at the closest
Lutheran church, St. James in Necedah. Thus it was that in 1892 Pastor Barikmo (probably from Adams County)
agreed to hold services for eight or nine families in the area. They met in their homes and later in
schoolhouses as often as there was an opportunity.
In 1896 a new pastor took over the field; the congregation was organized and given the name Armenia
Norwegian Lutheran Congregation. Neighboring churches contributed to the construction of a building and
the women's organization was credited with being of great help. In 1899 the church was dedicated. In the
early 1900s the congregation began to decline and it could no longer maintain the church. It disbanded in
1912.
The building was taken over by St. Paul's German Lutheran Congregation of New Miner.
