H. J. Chicago: Western Historical Co., 1881. p. 72 H. J. JAMES, lumberman, Ashland, was born in Portage Co., Ohio, Oct. 23, 1830. He lived at home until 1849, having learned the carpenter's trade of his father. He then came West and located at Neenah. He first worked at his trade, and then went into lumbering and saw-milling. In 1878 he came here and bought a share in the sawmill now owned by the Union Mill Company, of which he is president. The mill has a capacity of 60,000 feet of lumber and 30,000 shingles a day. In 1855 he was married to Miss Mary Scanlon, of Ireland. They have five children—Joseph H., Edmund (now in Waco, Texas, farming), Jennie, Helen and Alice.
