The Cumberland Milling Company

O.A. Ritan and S.W. Hines incorporated a steam grist mill, The Cumberland Milling Company in 1890 with O.A. Ritan as President, O.W. Mosher, S.W. Hines and Frank Algeo. Their buildings were located at the corner of Front and Elm Streets and consisted of a hay warehouse, a mill, elevators ad store house. The company manufactured all kinds of milling stuffs and were dealers in flour, hay, grain and bulky produce. Later F.W. Miller and B.H. Waterman became stockholders; Waterman soon selling back to the company when he left Cumberland. Improvements were made over the years and about 1919 steam power was discarded in favor of electricity, obtained from the lines of the Apple River Milling Company. Mr. Ritan retired to Oregon and the officers in 1922 were O.W. Mosher, President, F.W. Miller, Vice President, S.W. Hines, Treasurer, and Frank Algeo, Secretary and Manager. The company manufactured all kinds of flour and feed, their brands of flour being known as
"Veribest" and "White Rose."

This company was in business until 1935 when J.H. LeJeune became manager and it became the Farmers Co-op of today.
