The History of the Charles Hepburn Family

Charles Proctor Hepburn b. 21 April 1822 Williamsport, Lycoming PA - d. 30 Nov 1887 at Prairie Farm, Barron Co, WI. Buried at Prairie Farm Cem.  On September 12, 1832, after the death of his father in abt 1827,a guardian was appointed for Charles, a Peter Vanderbelt Jr (1786-1871), whose father Peter Sr (1767-1838) operated Williamsport's first blacksmith shop and whose wife was Mary Wyckoff. Mr
Vanderbelt may well have been a grand nephew/uncle to the young CP. In 1840 the Vanderbelts lived at
Loyalsock Twp, Lycoming Co.

Charles P Hepburn married Margaret Jane McAllister/McCollster in abt 1840 in Williamsport PA. She was born 1822- d 19 Dec 1898, the dau of Joseph and Mary Jane (Zeluff) McAllister. Charles P was a constable at the time of the 1850 Williamsport, PA census, later he was a lumberman/overseer for Knapp, Stout Co in Wisconsin, having moved there in abt 1870 and where he acquired land in 1877 and was a farmer. He and his wife were separated for about 20 years but re-united in Wisconsin, repeating their vows of marriage in Menomonie, Dunn Co in 1883 in the Protestant Episcopal faith. During the years of separation Charles P fathered a child named Elizabeth __ by a woman named Elizabeth (___) Hepburn - she died 5 Sept 1881 and is buried at Prairie Farm Cem.) with whom he had lived from the time of the smallpox epidemic of about 1863 to her death. Charles P Hepburn and his first family was living in Williamsport PA at the September 1850 census.

Seven children born Williamsport, Lycoming Co, PA as follows:

  • Sarah Hepburn b 1841 Williamsport, PA- d 1904 Cherokee, AB. married abt. 1859 Williamsport, PA Patrick Hastings (1830 Ireland-1891 Cherokee,AB.).  Sarah and Patrick had 10 children.
  • Mary Jane Hepburn 22 Jan 1843 Williamsport. PA-17 June 1900 Dovre, Barron Co, WI, buried Prairie Farm Cemetery, Barron Co, WI. Ref. copy of death certificate. Married Charles Covert (1836- died after 1900) Charles & Mary Jane Covert are listed on the Duboistown PA census for 1870 (they lived there to about 1888) and the Barron Co, WI census for 1895, living beside their daughter Laura Jane and her husband Peter Field Stafford (Jan 28, 1857 Maine -March 31, 1931 Sask, Canada).   • Eliza Ellen Hepburn b March 12 1844 Williamsport, PA d August 1927 State Veterans Home, Waupaca,WI married Samuel W.Campbell b 8 Mar 1832 - d Jan/April 1925 m in 7 Oct 1863 in Williamsport, PA. Died State Veterans Home, Wepaca,WI. Samuel served in the Civil War and was a member of the GAR . Children unknown.
  • Rebecca Hepburn b September 24 1849 Northumberland, PA d: November 1895 Prairie Farm, Barron Co, WI married John Mann b: Sept 24 1845 Williamsport, PA d June 03 1910 Prairie Farm, Barron County, WI.  John and Rebecca had 2 children:
    • John Hepburn Mann b Jan 22, 1871  married Lilly James b: Feb 01 1878; and had four children:
      • Eva Mae Mann b Dec 03 1893 d Rice Lake,WI
      • John Arthur Mann b Oct 13 1895 d March 23, 1897
      • James Leslie Mann b February 01 1901 d March 21 1901
      • Lyle Mann b August 11 1906 d June 28, 1943 married Esther________  and had two children:
        • Marilyn Mann
        • Lyle Mann.
    • Harry Garfield Mann b July 03 1881
  • James Perkins Hepburn b June 11 1847 Williamsport, PA d September 30, 1914 Prairie Farm, Barron Co, WI married Sarah Harriet Smith (1851-1938) on December 20 1868 Northumberland,PA. James Perkins Hepburn served in the Civil War. James and Sarah had nine children:
    • Margaret Jane Hepburn b October 01, 1869 Northumberland,PA d: May 27, 1944 in Prairie Farm,WI married Romanzon Abraham Kellogg b 1868 Prairie Farm, WI d 1950 Amber,WA m December 25 1889
      • Romanzon Abraham Kellogg b January 03 1889 - d 1977 married Ethel E Herron-Jones M b May 14 1889.
      • Luella Ruth Kellogg b October 31 1908 - d 1991 married Elmer Theodore Howlett m December 14, 1929.
      • Frank Romeo Kellogg b November 25 1891 d 1954 married Alice Eugenia Henry.  Frank and Alice had 4 children.
      • Charles Perkins Kellogg b August 08 1893 d: November 06 1958 married Helen Paterson.  They had three children.
      • Francis Elmer Kellogg b September 27 1895 married Ethel Keller. They had two children.
    • Cornelius Smith Hepburn b June 24 1872 Sunbury, PA d: October 08 1956 Vancouver, BC Sadie Pelton d July 03 1950
    • Eliza Ellen Hepburn b March 20 1875 d May 08 1956 Minneapolis, MN married Paul Hull d November 03 1906 m December 06 1893 Prairie Farm,WI. Eliza and Paul had 6 children:
      • Esther Ann Hull b November 24 1894 d December 22 1964 Ocean Springs, WI married Alvin Gustave Olson b April 10 1885 Nelsonville, WI d March 18 1965 Ocean Springs WI July 26 1916.
      • Paul Wesley Hull b July 14 1896 Greenwood, WI d August 12 1896 Greenwood,WI.
      • Justin Gladstone Hull b June 02 1898 Greenwood,WI d April 20 1899 Greenwood,WI.

      • Constance Vivien Hull b January 06 1903 married Clinton E. Mershon b May 24, 1900 d March 07 1960.
      • Linda Ellen Hull b May 01 1907 Prairie Farm, WI d April 04 1938 in Milwaukee,WI married Walter Henry Flynn II b August 1907 m October 29.
    (Eliza's obituary reads - Besides Mrs. Hull and their three daughters, there were present Mrs. Hull's father, Mr. Hepburn of Prairie Farm, her brothers, Neill and Harry of St. Paul, the former accompanied by his wife, Bert Hull of Chicago, a nephew of the deceased, and a Mr. Norris and Mr & Mrs Staples of Hammond. Rev. Hull was born in England some forty-one years ago and came to this country in 1891.)

    • Mary Estella Hepburn b August 20, 1883 Northumberland, PA d December 19, 1954 Omaha, Nebraska  married Dr. Charles Guy Goman d: January 15 1964 Auburn, Nebraska m November 28, 1901 Prairie Farm, WI.  They had two sons.
    • James Perkins Hepburn II b March 16 1887 Prairie Farm, WI d July 01 1969 Prairie Farm, WI married Estella Dorland d Chauvin, AB,Canada.  They had three children:

    • Maude Edna Hepburn b September 20 1889 in Brainerd, MN d January 03, 1962 in Minneapolis, MN  married Theodore Teigen d: April 19 1959 in Minneapolis, MN m August 20 1912.  They had three children.
    • Arthur Raymond Hepburn b April 18 1892 Wadena, MN d May 08 1946 St.
    • Paul, MN  married Eva _______
