Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

If all winters were as mild up this way as this one has been to date, the
Florida bathing beauty ads in the magazines would not look so alluring to
northerners as they otherwise do. What little snow has fallen was gone by
Christmas, and the temperature has not been low up here to his time.

from Camp Walters, Texas, Co. A, 1st Platoon, 60th Training Battalion, from
a few of the admirers of the Pioneer that you have here in Texas. We were
especially interested in the story of the blackout in Iron River. We wish to
inform the girls back home that our addresses are all the same and that any
letters they send us will be appreciated and answered. Signed -- Sincerely
yours, Privates Ted Kidkowski, George Davis and "Sport" Dargie, committee.
Lowell R. Tharp of this city, a graduate of Iron River High School,
has enlisted in the Air Force and expects to spend a year learning
airplane mechanics before being shifted to the flying force -- this on
account of the fact that he has not attained the age when they will allow
him to do any flying, but Lowell has ambitions to be a flyer. Good luck to
you, Lowell.
