| |
Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Headlines -- Throng Sees U.S. Highway No. 2 Dedication
The darkening shadows of evolvement (sic) of our country in
World War II and the designating of U.S. Highway No. 2 as a military
and strategic standpoint were largely responsible for the completion this
season of the concrete pavement all the way across Northern Wisconsin
-- a gap 12.7 miles reaching from Iron River to a point one-half mile or so
east of Ino. The reception committee, consisting of J.L. MacRae,
Roland Mellon and Ernest Chantelois, broke the ribbon held in the
hands of former Governor Fred Zimmerman at 2 p.m. Sunday last. A 25
piece band from Superior provided music for the onlookers and a
motorcade proceeded to Ashland, there joined by the Ashland Band (to
go) back to Iron River for the formal ceremony at the Iron River Gym at 7:30
p.m. After Miss Jean Yeakey and Leslie Bundgaard sang two
numbers, Mr. Zimmerman responded with many words of praise for a
job well done. Radio station WEBC, with Announcer Ben Leighton at
the helm, broadcast the ceremonies live.
Louis Pomish is erecting a garage with dimensions of 26x60 feet on his lots
on Franklin Street. Harry Jardine of Jardine Construction has the contract.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Willoughby and Mrs. Willoughby’s mother,
Mrs. Oas, left Monday morning to motor out to Spokane, Wash., where
Mr. Willoughby has accepted a position with the Marshall-Wells
Hardware Company. His brother-in-law, Earl Oas, is working for that
company there.
Frank Berube and Herman Hoving returned Friday from Webster,
South Dakota, where they spent five days hunting upland game birds,
water fowl and prairie jack rabbits, and they brought home about all the law
would allow of the different varieties. They said they never had quite as
pleasurable a hunting trip before.
Herbster -- This village is making preparations to celebrate
Armistice Day with a special dance and program for the people of
Clover Town an their friends from nearby points at the Herbster Gym
next Tuesday evening. Donald Sauve, former Iron River musician, and
his swing band, a group that is in much demand in the Head of the
Lakes territory, will furnish music for the occasion. A lunch will be
served by the PTA ladies, with dancing from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. This
celebration is another made possible by the newly organized Clover
Boosterines of the township.
