Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Mr. and Mrs. John J. "Jack" Farry are mourning the sudden and
unexpected death of their little daughter, Patricia, who died at her home
Jan. 4th after but a brief illness. She was seven years old at the time and
in the second grade at the Iron River School. Besides her parents, Patricia
is survived by three sisters, Josephine, Gertrude and Katherine. After lying
in state at the Lenroot Funeral Home, the funeral occurred at St. Michael's
Church at 1 0 a.m. (no date given) with Rev. Fr. John Dzurko officiating.
The family has the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
Charles Vojacek, who has been confined to St. Mary's Hospital in Superior
for the last six weeks, is able to be around in a wheelchair for a short
time each day. Although greatly improved, he will have to remain in the
hospital for some time. He wants to thank everyone who brightened up the
holidays for him. Charles was badly injured in a hunting accident in
November.
Miss Berdine Hanson, who has been employed in the Iron River
Post Office for many months, enrolled as a student in the Duluth
Business University.
The Rationing Board, the members of which serve without pay,
has been named for Bayfield County and consists of Albert Swanson,
chairman; Carl Ungrodt and Lloyd Vienneau, all of Washburn. Since no
gas allowance is paid, and all gas is needed, it was thought advisable to
appoint members who could get together with minimum expense. The
government is getting its machinery in motion to put into effect its
drastic motor vehicle tire rationing program to conserve rubber,
important for war requirements.
Several residents and former residents of Iron River met together
and had a New Year's party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Smith
(Laura Esswein) of Fontana, Calif. Mr. Frank Esswein had just arrived
for the winter. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Blomgren, on their way to Los
Angeles, stopped off in the late afternoon. Then Mrs. Smith Called Mr.
and Mrs. L.C. Matthews (Maxine Yeakey) and had them drive over for
the evening. They agreed that the chief topic of conversation for the
evening was not the war, but the old home town.
Roy Ellis wasn't forgotten -- "Dear (Editor) Savage: Each card and present
I received over the holiday was greatly appreciated and I wish I could thank
everyone personally. Thank you all again and thank you, Mr. Savage, for your
courtesy. Wish all of you could enjoy the Alabama sunshine."
