Bayfield County Journal Memories Column
| |
Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

A five minute blackout drill will take place in Iron River on Friday
night. So tomorrow night, sometime between the hours of 8 and 9:15
p.m., the fire siren will be blown in a manner similar to that sounded at
noon every day, and when that takes place, the street lights will be turned
off promptly and every responsible head of every home and every business
establishment in the village are asked to turn off every light so as not to
be visible from the outside until such time as the town siren will give an
all clear signal a few minutes later.
Suggested gifts for our soldiers, Navy and Airmen can include
candy, cigarettes, money, subscriptions to hometown papers and
magazines; non-perishable things to eat are recommend as well as cakes
and cookies, as only mothers and grandmothers can make them.
Frank Moore, a resident of Iron River and vicinity for 49 years, died at
his home Tuesday. The deceased was born in Brookfield, Mo., Jan 17, 1878. He
married Amelia Leuder, stepsister of William Klino, and his wife and two
children survive: Lee of Chicago and Earl, chief of the Coast Guard Patrol
in Manila, where active fighting is now going on
in repelling a Japanese invasion attempt. (Note -- Earl and his family
were prisoners of the Japanese all during the war. Earl never fully
recovered and died shortly after the war.) Mr. Moore's funeral will be
conducted at the Congregational Church by the Rev. Robert Black of
Iron River, and Rev. Otto Simon of Drummond. The Oddfellows will
attend the funeral in a body, and burial will follow at the Iron River
Cemetery. The pallbearers will be members of the Forest Rangers Dept.
of the Wisconsin Conservation Commission, where Mr. Moore was a
retiree.
Thanks -- Again I want to thank our citizens for their efforts in another
emergency, the height of whose ambition has been to assist in these cases.
How could anyone get discouraged in a community like this? The road over the
hill may seem long, but when occasion demands my friends surprisingly cover
it in a fraction of a minute from seemingly nowhere, and that doesn't mean
maybe! Ben Upson.
We are throwing out, burning up and destroying and all
merchandise made in Japan, Germany and Italy from our stock. You
cannot buy anything made by an enemy country from us. MacRae Drug
Co. (Please remember, readers, this was nearly 60 years ago and another
time, so do not judge too harshly, as many are yet alive who remember these
dark days.)
