Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.

web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

On Friday of next week (March 27), Mr. and Mrs. John Niell of this city will observe their golden wedding anniversary. They were married at Park Falls, Wis., on March 27, 1892, and they were informed at the time of their marriage that it was the first such ceremony ever performed in that new hamlet. They moved to Iron River shortly after their marriage and have made their home here ever since. Mr. and Mrs.
Niell reside on a farm a mile northwest of town, near the fairgrounds, and Mr. Niell delivers milk and cream to town customers every day. They have two daughters, Mrs. "Babe" Nimmo, who resides in L'Anse, Mich., and Mrs. Ethel Howley (Woerle) who resides here. Mrs. Niell is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Upson, pioneer residents of Iron River and a sister to Mrs. Maybelle Chantelois.
(Writer's note -- someone gave me an article from the L'Anse, Mich., paper recently, and Mrs. "Babe" Nimmo had celebrated her 104th birthday!)
James Owen,(sic) who lived here for some time, was suddenly
killed while employed with a crew in razing Elevator X at Superior. It
seemed that a clam bucket crane was employed in picking up the debris
and loading it on the gondolas and somehow the bucket was opened at
the wrong time and the contents fell on Mr. Owens (sic), who was on
the opposite side of the car from the crane operator. Death was
instantaneous. The deceased is survived by his widow, two daughters,
and a son, Joe, who is an MP in the Army and is located in a western
state. The funeral was held Monday and interment was in St. Michael's
Cemetery.
The Northland College choir, now in the eastern states on its
annual tour, sang over a Boston radio station yesterday afternoon and
the program was broadcast over the country in a nationwide hookup.
Iron River folks got a special thrill since Robert Black, of this city, is
a basso singer in that choir.
Father John Dzurko, pastor of St. Michael's Church in this city,
was among the 200 clergy who, with thousands of laity, attended the
ceremony of the enthronement of the Most Rev. William Patrick
O'Connor as bishop of the Superior Diocese of Wisconsin. Bishop
O'Connor was a chaplain in the United States Army and saw many
months of service at the front in France is World War I.

Vern Knapp and Rosie, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Aho, Rod, Marilyn and
Larry, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brozovich, Alyce O'Brien, Mark Thompson,

Roger had a medical checkup.
Mrs. Jennie Hanson returned Friday from a month's visit with her daughter
and son-in-law, Ilene and Leonard Blomgren of North
Hollywood, Calif. While there, Mrs. Gladys Fox Lemos of Stockton, a
former Iron Riverite, spent a weekend with them. The Arnold Haacks
have been spending the winter months near there, too.
Appointment of crew leaders for the 1960 Census of Population

Census Bureau's temporary district office in Superior. Bayfield County
