Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Iron River Memories

March 24, 1938
A meeting of the Iron River High School Alumni Association will be held at
the town library in the Town Hall Friday Evening, March 25th, to make plans
for the annual banquet. All members are urged to be present. James C. Moran,
president.
Some 30 Bayfield County men took the examination for highway
patrolman in the county last week, and Howard Fuhrmann of the town
of Tripp proved to be the successful applicant. He will start on the job
April 1st. Howard is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fuhrmann, and his home is
2½ miles north of Iron River. Howard’s friends are extending
congratulations.
Another and important step in securing a school gymnasium for
Iron River was taken on Tuesday night when the electors of Iron River,
by a vote of 218 to 34, authorized the school board to borrow $7,500
from the State Trust Fund for the purpose of paying that portion of the
expenses to be borne by the district in the erection of the new
gymnasium. The actual beginning of work to be done by the WPS will
commence as soon as possible.
The equalized value of both real and personal property in the town of Iron
River for the year 1937 was $397,485. Total for all of Bayfield County was
$11,794,555.
Monday afternoon at about 2 p.m., a fire alarm was sent in that the
home of Mr. and Mrs. William Ferguson was ablaze. When the firemen
arrived on the scene a few minutes later, they found the kitchen roof
pretty well enveloped in flames, and also some fire had penetrated under the
roof of the main building. The fire was gotten under control without much
difficulty, but nevertheless the home suffered considerable damage.
Seventy-one degrees above on March 21st, according to the
government thermometer in Iron River, establishing a record for that
date.
The Iron River Rebekahs motored over to Ashland Tuesday
evening for a 6:30 p.m. supper with members of the Ashland lodge. In
the evening, the Ashland Lodge Degree Team initiated seven new
members for Iron River Lodge: Namely, Mrs. Cathryn Tuttle and Mrs.
Lucy Hendricks, daughters of Mrs. Irene Schram, and Mrs. Celia
Wilkins.
March 25, 1948
Mrs. George (Helen) Holly of this city called up the Pioneer office last
Saturday afternoon, March 20th, and reported seeing a robin in the yard of
her home in this city. She was the first one to report seeing a robin this
spring in Iron River. Congratulations, Mrs. Holly!
Everyone is looking forward to the smelt season. Many people like smelts
fully as well as they do brook trout, which is generally regarded as “tops”
when it comes to fish par excellent!
Mr. Victor Lussikka and Miss Mildred Johnson, both residents of Oulu, were
married March 20th, and that evening a wedding dance was
held at the Iron River Gym in their honor, with the hall packed to
capacity by friends from all over the countryside.
Earl Carrick, proprietor of Carrick’s Magic Bar, has gone to
Excelsior Springs, Mo., where he expects to remain for a couple of
weeks.
The Alice B. Knowles cottage on the Muskeg River has been sold
to Stanley and Margaret Kolling of Toledo. They expect to take
possession April 15th.
Willard Roe, a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Roe, was seriously
injured a few days ago when he fell from a scaffold while hanging a
neon sign at International Falls, Minn. He was rushed by ambulance to
St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, where it was found he had a broken pelvis
bone. He will be confined to the hospital for several weeks.
Little Patty Ness of the first grade recently did a fine job of singing on
the Kiddie Carnival over radio station WEBC in Duluth.
Incidentally, he is also the leader of the first grade rhythm band. In the
area forensics contest, we had two first place winners: Mary Crase, humor
declamation, and Kenneth Durr, non-original orations. They will be going on
to Hurley. Our best magazine salesman in the whole school was Charlie
Mitchell, who sold $46.75 worth of subscriptions.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred P. (Wigs) Lund announce the birth of a
daughter March 13th. She has been named Candace Jean. The Lunds
reside at Sherburne, Minn., where Wigs is a teacher of music.
March 28, 1968
District Forest Ranger Bernard Klugow of Brule states that plans are now
under way to relocate the Iron River Ranger Station. The new site will be in
the Town of Barnes.
