Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Leafblad of Iron River, a daughter, this
morning.
Percy Armbruster of this city ran across a bear's den in the Angus
Lake region three miles east of this city one day last week, and since
then several people have visited the location to observe. There are two
bear, a large one and a smaller one. The large one is quite alert,
according to Charles Johnson. Charlie (was) accompanied by his wife
and Adolph Dahl, Charlie says Adolph would have been a little braver if he
had had a cannon with him. Adolph was not interviewed to get his opinion
about the way Charlie acted.
On Monday morning over the radio, it was announced that a
division of United States troops arrived in Northern Ireland, where they
will be stationed. It is quite definitely known that two young men from this
city, Vilas Warbalow and Ted Mellon, are in that division. Some time ago it
was announced that American troops were going to take over the defense of
Northern Ireland, relieving British troops who have been thoroughly trained
for service in another theater of war, presumably the China Sea area against
Japan.
The home Mr. and Mrs. L.H. "Prof" Merrihew is under quarantine
because their daughter, Mary, has scarlet fever. Mr. Merrihew, who is
principal of Iron River Schools, has moved to the Park Hotel. Mary was
quite ill for a couple of days, but has since been much improved.
Warren Bailey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arby Bailey of Tripp, is with the Radio
Division of the Air Corps at Scott Field, Ill. Warren graduated from Iron
River High School last spring and being interested in radio work, enlisted
at his first opportunity to get raining in that line. He would like to hear
from his old friends in the Iron River area.
Two young men from Iron River released from military service a couple of
months ago because they were over 28 years of age were
recalled into service last week. They were Reginald Tharp and Alex
Polkoski. Polkoski left Thursday night and Tharp the following day.
Neither one knew whether they would be sent back to their original
division or not when they left.

their sister, Nell Rae Machon, of Fort Wayne, Ind., to Mr. Harry Mason
of Klamath Falls., Ore., on January 26th. After the wedding a party of
eight drove down to Iron River and were served dinner at George's
Cafe. Nell Rae was born and raised in Iron River, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Hobbs, a former chairman, and has spent the last five
summers with her brother and his wife in Iron River. Mr. Mason was
also raised here. They will make their winter home in Cloquet.
Jeffrey Little, 20-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Little, Ashland,
died Sunday in Wisconsin General Hospital in Madison.
Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Linda; his paternal
grandmother Violet McCauley of Iron River and his maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cadotte of Union Grove. Services
were held yesterday morning at St. Agnes Church in Ashland.
During the year 1959, the State Drivers License Examiners Allen Bailey of
Washburn and Martin Niemi of Saxon conducted the
following business at the Iron River station: 129 inside tests conducted, 91
passed, 37 failed the law test, 5 failed the vision test; 152 road tests
were given, 119 passed, 33 failed. Thirty cars did not pass the safety
check -- the most common defects were poor brakes, turn signals not
working and lights not operating.
