The History Center and Archives is the newest in the statewide network of Area Research Centers (ARC's) all linked to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. The Ashland ARC is the northern field office for the State Historical Society and is linked with the Madeline Island Historical Museum.

The counties that are covered are: Ashland, Bayfield, Forest, Iron, Oneida, Sawyer, Price, Vilas and Washburn. Collection items of most interest to genealogists are the naturalization papers (for all counties except Iron); the pre-1907 registrations of birth, death and marriage; area newspapers on microfilm (for obits); census rolls for Ashland and Bayfield Counties; court records; tax and assessment rolls. We don't have everything for every county, so it is a good idea to call first. We don't have an individual web-page yet, though information about our site can be accessed through the State Historical Society's Archives Division home page: www.shsw.wisc.edu/archives/ -- Searching in ArCat, the Archives' On-Line Catalog will allow you to search our collections.
