Available for on-site research at the Resource Center is a collection of  records of genealogical value to Barron County, WI residents. A few of these records include the Rice Lake Chronotype and the Barron News Shield, 23 volumes of obituaries, church directories and histories, township and community histories, plat books, telephone directories, an extensive military records collection, local family histories, photographs, cemetery abstracts, school and township records, Barron county Pioneer and Century Certificate proofs, Barron County Century Farms and any records that name people and put them in a certain place at a certain time. BHGS-BC welcomes donations of old Barron County telephone books, fraternal society membership records, cemetery information and records, plat books, school records, family histories, journals, diaries, family trees and notes often inside of a Bible, etc.    "To help us grow our collection; we encourage anyone who has Barron County records of genealogical value to donate them to the Society."

Monthly Meetings are the second Monday of the month February thru November at:

Membership Registration and Meeting   6:30 pm
Feature Program or Speaker is  7:00 to 9:00 pm

which is an informative or educational program with a wide variety guest speakers.
Our feature program is free (unless otherwise stated) and the general public is welcome to attend.

About our Presenter: Lori Bessler has worked at the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) Library Archives since 1988.  She is a Reference Librarian and Outreach Coordinator.  Lori has lectured throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest on genealogical topics for over 30 years and has been researching family history for over 40 years.  She specializes in breaking down brick walls and locating hard-to-find resources.

 Lori Bessler will speak on two 1-hour topics:

1.  Collections and Services of the Wisconsin Historical Society

Library, Archives and Collections


The Wisconsin Historical Society holds one of the top 5 genealogical collections in the country.  The scope is North American collections so it includes all of the United States and Canada.  The staff and services makes this collection very accessible to distant researchers.  Lori Bessler, Reference Librarian, will provide instruction on how to navigate the WHS website, online catalog and what you will find in the phenomenal collections!


2.  Immigration Research


Almost everyone has an immigrant story to uncover.  There are a variety of sources to use to find those stories.  Lori Bessler, Reference Librarian, will show you the research methods for uncovering your immigrant story and where to find the records online and off.

Our Mission

The purpose of the Society shall be to encourage and teach aspects of genealogical research and to preserve records of Barron County genealogical relevance within geographical boundaries of Barron County, WI.

Our Goals

encourage the preservation of genealogically relevant materials regarding Barron County WI,
educate persons in appropriate genealogical research methods
aid persons in conducting the research of their Barron County WI roots
encourage membership in the society
support existing resources in Barron County that contribute to this purpose


The Blue Hills Genealogical Society - Barron Co., Inc. offers two types of memberships:   
Membership Dues (within the USA) for one year are: $18.00 (single) or $27.00 (dual)
Dues are payable in US funds only!
Our membership year runs from April 1 of one year until March 31of the following year.

*Dual memberships have all of the above privileges except they will receive one hard copy of the society bylaws and a digital copy of THE ECHOES newsletter (US mail version upon request).

Paid membership includes the following privileges:

Voting privileges at regularly scheduled society meetings
Copy of Blue Hills Genealogical Society Bylaws
Quarterly Society Newsletter "The Echoes"
One free query in "The Echoes" newsletter
Unlimited on-site lookups in the Resource Center collections which includes:  Surname File, Obituaries, Cemetery abstracts, Christeson Civil War files, and the 1922 History of Barron County.
Unlimited free lookups from all the on-site Resource Center materials
 $10/hour for all Barron County Research done outside of the Resource Center. One hour minimum charge for all off-site services.

Volunteer opportunities are available.  Members are encouraged to make a contribution of their time and/or talents by participating in the fund raising activities of the society. For more information contact us at .
