Dunn County was formed in 1854 out of Chippewa County. The State of Wisconsin Census of 1855 is the first inventory of persons residing there. The 1860 Federal Census should be consulted for more complete information regards a better assignment of townships and persons dwelling there. For information about those living within the Dunn County area prior to 1855 consult the 1850 Federal Census for Chippewa County.

The microfilm of this 1855 census was filmed in reverse order from the pages in the original book. there are 17 pages and the page numbers listed in this index should be counted as one reads the microfilm. The census taker listed the townships at the top of each page:

Page 1, 2 = Dunnville

Page 3 = Mud Creek

Page 4 = Iron Creek

Page 5 = Stump Prairie

Page 6, 7 = Ogally

Page 8-17 = Menomine (Menomonie)

Census taken effective June 1, 1855

State of Wisconsin, Dunn County, ELIJAH G. STEVENS, appointed by the Secretary of State, states he has completed the census June 1, 1855 and that there are 1,096 males and 619 females in said county.
