Ivan Allen
Ivan "Gene" Allen, 77, Goodman, died
Sunday, Feb. 24 at Florence Villa Nursing Home.
Born June 11, 1923 in Delphi, Ind. to the late Mr. and Mrs. Luther
(Mary Ruth Beouther) Allen, he moved from Delphi, Ind. to Goodman at a
young age. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After
returning from the service, he worked for a short time for Sunbeam Co.
in Chicago. He then moved to Goodman and took over his family farm,
and worked for the Goodman Veneer Mill, retiring in 1989. He was a
member of Armstrong Creek VFW Post 7444 and St. Hubert Shrine Hunting
club.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Frank (Mary) Frzetic, Marie
Allen and Mrs. John (Thelma) Sisney, all of Chicago.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Perry, Wayne and Ethan
Allen; and two sisters, Erma Slusser Hoeper and Naomi Hooper.
Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the
Armstrong Creek Community Center. Funeral services will be there at 11
a.m. Rev. Edward Nowakowski will officiate. The VFW of Armstrong Creek
will conduct a veterans memorial service following the funeral.

Ellis Peters
Funeral services for Ellis Peters, 81,
Florence, were held Wednesday, Aug. 27 at Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral
Home. Celebrant Robert Fuse officiated with burial in Woodlawn
Cemetery.
He died Monday, Aug. 25 at the Florence Villa Nursing Home.
Born in Tipler on Feb. 3, 1922 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Ray (Irmaguard
Gilmore) Peters, he resided in Florence from 1929 to 1941, where he
did carpentry for the CCC Camps in the area. He served in the U.S.
Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945 when he was honorably
discharged. On Dec. 16, 1967 he married his wife, Marion in Milwaukee
where they resided until moving to Dunbar in 1980. She preceded him in
death on July 25, 1993. He was a member of the American Legion Post of
Milwaukee.
He is survived by one son, Edward Peters of Springfield, Ma.

Funeral services for Edward F. Malinowski, 66, Florence, formerly of Peshtigo, were held Tuesday,
Sept. 30 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Rev. Andrew Schwartz
officiated. Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home served the family.
He died Saturday, Sept. 27 at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay.
Born Feb. 18, 1937 in Marinette to the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward (Marie
Bergold) Malinowski, Sr., he married the former Bette Raatz in June of
1958 in Gillett. He worked many years as a logger, retiring in 1998.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Russ (Donna) Malinowski and Rod
(Connie) Malinowski, both of Florence; one daughter, Mrs. Todd (Kim)
Parins of Green Bay; and three grandchildren.
Memorials can be made to St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church Building Fund
in Florence.

JoAnn L. Guzowski, 65, Florence, died
Thursday, Nov. 20 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, Iron
Mountain, Mich.
Born June 28, 1938 in Kenosha to the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Betty
Wester) Skinner, she graduated from high school in Chicago, Ill. In
October of 1959 she married Bill Guzowski in Chicago. She had several
different jobs during the years, which included being the Assistant
Librarian at the Florence Elementary School.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Don (Patricia) Guzowski of
Green Bay, Mike (Mary) Guzowski of Wrights-town, Jim Guzowski of
La-Crosse; one sister, Mrs. Jerry (Delores) Eggars of Henderson, Nev.;
four grandchildren; and her mother-in-law, Helen Guzowski.
Visitation will be Saturday, Nov. 29 from 2-3 p.m. at the Jacobs-Lundholm
Funeral Home in Florence. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. at
the funeral home. Pastor Doug Johnson will officiate.

Funeral services for Bessie C. Guy, 84,
formerly of 521 Case St., Kingsford, Mich., were held Wednesday, July
10 at Kingsford Funeral Home. Rev. David Anderson officiated with
burial in Quinnesec Cemetery. Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of
Kingsford served the family.
She died Sunday, July 7 at the Florence Villa Nursing Home where she
resided.
Born July 31, 1917 in Marinette to the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank (Willian
Bennett) Dill, she married Earl Guy on July 27, 1934 in Amberg. He
preceded her in death in 1973.
Survivors include three sons, LeRoy (Kathrina) Guy of Webb, Al., Wayne
(Muriel) Guy of Omro, Robert (Carol) Guy of Iron Mountain; one
brother, Robert Dill of Kiel; two sisters, Gladys Wicklund of Felch,
Wanda Robbins of Rouge River, Or.; six grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two
brothers, Clifford and Myron Dill.

LeRoy Baker
A Memorial Service for LeRoy F. Baker,
79, Aurora, was conducted Saturday, Sept. 14 at Erickson-Rochon and
Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Deacon Don Christy officiated.
He died Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Florence Villa Nursing Home.
Born May 14, 1923 to the late Mr. and Mrs. William (Jane Barrow)
Baker, he was a resident of Aurora for the past six years, coming
from Menominee, Mich. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in
Escanaba and was a Tech Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War
II. He was stationed in London, England and fought in the Battle of
the Bulge and in Remagen. Later he retired from the Ansul Chemical
Company in Marinette. On June 23, 1987 he married Alice (Corwin)
Perkins in Menominee. He was a member of the American
Legion-Kingsford Post, Post Commander of the M&M Yacht Club in
Menomi-nee, and was a member of the Menominee Legion Post for many
years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John (Connie) Baker and
Michael (Jodi) Baker of Menominee; a daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Lynn)
Clark of Pensacola Beach, Fla.; stepchildren, Gary (Ann) Corwin of
Stephenson, Mrs. Kenneth (Sandra) Schuette of Jackson; four
brothers, James Baker, Lloyd Baker, William Baker and Jack Baker,
all of Escanaba; three grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; and 11
step great-grandchildren.

Robert Rochon
Robert J. Rochon, 79, Goodman, died Monday, Dec.
2 at his home.
Born March 4, 1923 in Alpha to the late Mr. and Mrs. Claude (Katherine Schmid)
Rochon, he graduated from Florence High School in 1942. He served in the U.S.
Navy during World War II. On April 26, 1947 he married the former Ruth Miersch
in Florence, and they lived in Goodman for the past 40 years. He was a master
plumber and owned and operated Rochon Plumbing and Heating for many years
before retiring in 1984. He was a member of American Legion Post 325 and St.
Joan of Arc Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Claude (Diane) Rochon of Goodman; two
daughters, Mrs. Bob (Peggy) Cutchins of Goodman, Bobbee Kobylarz of Oshkosh;
four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Jack (Elaine)
Rochon of Florence, Claude (June) Rochon of Arkansas, and Jim "Nap" (Marlene)
Rochon.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan Kobylarz; a brother, Lawrence
"Fritz" Rochon; and a sister, Mercedes Zaupa.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Joan of Arc
Catholic Church in Goodman. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m.
at the church. Rev. Edward Nowakowski will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

John Sherman
Funeral services for John L. Sherman,
89, of Iron Mountain, Mich., were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb.
28, at Jacobs Funeral Home. Msgr. James Kaczmarek officiated with
burial in Cemetery Park.
He died on Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Florence Villa Nursing &
Rehabilitation Center in Florence.
Born in Niagara on May 19, 1915, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam (Apolonia
Novak) Sherman, he graduated from Niagara High School and joined the
U.S. Navy during World War II. He married the former Anna Desjardin
on Nov. 12, 1977, and she preceded him in death on July 27, 2003. He
was employed at Kimberly Clark Corp. as a stack feeder for more than
30 years until his retirement and enjoyed flower gardening.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Michael (Dawn) Murphy of
Green Bay, Mrs. Richard (Patricia A.) Constantini of Iron Mountain
and Jeanne Gardipee of Norway; two brothers, Raymond of Arkansas and
Frank of Niagara, and Lawrence; two sisters, Agatha and Mrs. Elmer (Estell)
Enders; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by one
daughter, Kathryn Ball in 1988; three brothers, Felix, Joseph and
Daniel; and one sister, Veronica.

Clara Marie Schmidt, 79, died Monday, July 10 at
Florence Villa Nursing Home.
Born March 23, 1921 in South Dakota to the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew (Susie
Hofer) Walz, she married Howard Schmidt in Des Moines, Ia. on Oct. 14, 1939.
She lived in Amberg for 23 years and was previously from Milwaukee.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce of Germantown, Craig (Michelle) of Elm
Grove; one daughter, Mrs. Duane (Barbara) Dent of Iron River, Mich.; five
sisters, Mrs. Arty (Alice) Yankee of Cherokee Village, Ar., Mrs. Duffy (Sue)
Ossanna and Vi Ossanna of Florida, Virginia Jung of Waukesha, Mrs. Gunter
(Leone) Suering of Oconomowoc; one brother, Donald (Toots) Walz of Cherokee
Village, Ar.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and a sister, Darlene Buck.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 14 at 11 a.m. at the Interfaith
Bible Church in Amberg. Rev. Dale Raatz will officiate. Morasky-Messar Funeral
Home is serving the family.

Funeral services for Eugene Engebos,
67, Iron River, Mich., were held Wednesday, Sept. 5 at Langenberg
Funeral Home-Stambaugh Chapel. Rev. Thomas Wickstrom officiated with
burial in Stambaugh Cemetery.
He died Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Florence Villa Nursing Home.
Born March 4, 1934 in Green Bay to the late Mr. and Mrs. Emil (Mathilda
Christens) Engebos, he attended schools there. He served in the U.S.
Army during the Korean War. On Sept. 30, 1969 he married the former
Marilyn Kochynski, and the couple moved to the Iron River area in
1986. He was a former member of the American Legion, and helped with
the Special Olympic programs in Green Bay where he was also a former
Boy Scout leader.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; two sons, Carl (Misti) Engebos
of Burnsville, Mn., Jason Engebos and friend, Wanda Pitts, of Green
Bay; two daughters, Christine Engebos and fiance, Peter Kaepp, of
Bolingbrook, Ill., Lisa Engebos of Iron River; a sister, Mary Ann
Drew of Green Bay; five brothers, Jerome and Larry Engebos of
Crivitz, Richard, James and Robert Engebos, all of Green Bay; and
five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Engebos.

Jim C. "Skeeter" Gorr, age 49, of Caspian, Mich. formerly of Long
Lake, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2007. Skeeter was born in Stambaugh,
Mich. on June 25, 1957 the son of Bud and Gwen Gorr.
Skeeter was a member of the graduating class of 1975 from Florence High
School. After graduation, he moved to the Green Bay area and worked in
construction for Weise Construction. He moved back to the Long Lake and
Caspian area and worked as a carpenter.
Skeeter enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap shooting, and canning pickles. He was
also a big Packer fan.
He is survived by: Mother: Gwenneth Gorr (Mac Mazur) of Goodman, Wis.
Fiance: Pamela Sue Juneau, Caspian, Mich. Daughters: Jamie Gorr, Green
Bay; Lindsey Gorr, Green Bay; Carli Gorr, Pulaski; Jenna Gorr, Pulaski.
Brothers and sisters: Pete and Patti Gorr, Iron River, Mich.; Paul and Beth
Gorr, Appleton; Linda and Tom Cleereman, Laona; Tom and Lee Gorr, Long Lake;
Vicki and Bob Cleereman, Newald; Gwenda and Jeff Dantoin, Monico, Wis.;
Keith and Jackie Gorr, Long Lake; Shelly and John Criel, Goodman. One
grandchild: Tyler Ireland. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews
and close friend, "Sach" Arnel.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bud Gorr; daughter, Sarah Lynn Gorr
and infant daughter, Tonya Rae Gorr.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
at the Weber-Hill Funeral Home in Crandon (715) 478-2322. Funeral services
will follow at 7:30 p.m. with Father Dave Schmidt officiating. Interment
will be at Forest Home Cemetery, Newald.

Schuls, age 88, of Niagara, passed away Wednesday, January 10,
2007, at Dickinson County Hospital.
She was born May 21, 1918, in Sturgeon Bay, daughter of the late Frank
and Loretta (Hayes) Farley. She married Allie Schuls September 30,
1937. He preceded her in death in 1964.
Marion was a member of the Salvation Army Church in Green Bay. She
moved to Niagara in 2000. Marion enjoyed spending time with her
family, camping, and volunteer work at the VA Hospital and the
Salvation Army.
She is survived by two sons, Dale (Brenda) Schuls, Racine, Larry
(Andrea) Schuls, Caladonia; three daughters, Barbara (Charles)
Paquette, Beverly Trulock, Nancy O’Shaughnessy, all of Niagara; one
daughter-in-law, Donna Schuls, Racine; one sister, Oramae Daniels,
Wash.; 22 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, Allie, Marion was preceded in death
by one son, Allen “Butch” Schuls; two grandchildren Lori Moriarity and
Linda Williams.
Visitation was Saturday, January 13, 2007, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., at Jacobs
Funeral Home Niagara Chapel. The funeral service was at 2 p.m. at the
funeral home. Nancy Reese, Pastoral Care Director, offered a time of
reflection.
Burial is in Breitung Township Cemetery.

Cornett, 64, passed away Jan. 12, 2007 at Marymount Medical Center in
London, KY. He was born Oct. 8, 1942 in Blue Diamond, Kentucky, the
son of Carl B. and Goldie (Holland) Cornett. He was a U.S. Marine
veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. He retired after 21 years
of service as a Master Gunnery Sgt. He worked as an Electronics Tech
and C.R.I.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters Cindy L.
Cornett and Mindy L. Cornett; one son, S.F.C. Lance S. Cornett who was
killed in action in Ramadi, Iraq; and one grandson, Justin J. Chesnut.
He is survived by one daughter, Cristal Chesnut and husband Jimmy,
London, KY; one brother, Hubert C. Cornett; and two grandchildren,
Jesse L. Chesnut and Briana C. Cornett, London, KY.
Memorial service will be held at a later date in Tipler, Wis.
Burial will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Tipler. |
Edith V. Jensen, age 83, passed away Tuesday,
January 9, 2007, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford after a lengthy
battle with Parkinsons.
In passing, she leaves behind a record of successes of the mind and spirit.
Born September 11, 1923, in Rolla, N.D., Edee was the daughter of proud
Finnish parents, Charlie and Elvira (Koski) Johnson. After graduation, she met
Jack Jensen doing the waltz and the polka at a dance in Hibbing and later
married him on June 3, 1942. In raising a family of four children, she
followed and supported her husband in his Dept. of Natural Resources career
from Waskish to Pinecreek, MN to eventual retirement in Kingsford, MI in 1979.
Edee guided and gave with compassion and strength. With reason and wisdom, she
taught by example and learned along with her family. Many a time while helping
with homework her kids would need to wrestle their text books back from mom.
Each morning she’d post “the word of the day” in the kitchen, forcing the
sleepy school-agers to use it in the day’s conversations. With an oatmeal
raisin cookie, she could motivate anyone. She could best her sons at golf or
sew a prom dress that sparkled. She made us believe in ourselves when we
doubted and picked us up when we fell.
A member of the VFW Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Garden Club, church
organizations, and youth groups, Edee made her contribution to the community.
Her other interests included sewing, golfing, international curling, and
reading. She was a crossword puzzle enthusiast as well as a masterful cribbage
player with many "29" hands.
Survivors include two sons, Jack A. Jensen, Laurens, S.C., Scott (Hanie)
Jensen, Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Judith (Robert) Wicklund, Aurora,
Wis., DeeAnn (Mike) Furfaro, Pinewood, Minn.; three brothers, Walter Johnson,
Sebeka, Minn., Willard Johnson, Sebeka, Minn., Russell Johnson, Veteran, Wyo.;
three sisters, Hazel Moorman, Anna Chilgren, and Grace Hanson, all of
Baudette, Minn.; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces
and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, Jack, she was preceded in death by two
brothers, Ray and Glen Johnson.
There will always be tomorrow and will always be a way. Although we cannot see
her, she is with us still. A Mother like ours is both memory and living
presence.
Private services and burial will be held in summer of 2007 to be announced by
family.

Mrs. Randi Schmitt

FLORENCE, Wis. — Randi S. Schmitt, 87, of Florence, formerly of Racine,
Wis., woke to eternal life on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003.
She was born March 28, 1915, in Oslo, Norway, and came to Calumet in 1920.
She was the daughter of the late Arvid and Ragnhild (Helgesen) Hansen. The
Hansen family moved to the Iron Mountain-Kingsford area where she met and
married Frederick Schmitt on March 25, 1937, in Iron Mountain. In 2002 they
celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in Racine, Wis., where they had
lived since 1949. Randi worked as a certified nurse’s assistant at St.
Luke’s Hospital in Racine, retiring in 1975 to become a domestic engineer.
She was a former member of First Covenant Church of Iron Mountain and had
sung in the church choir. Randi most recently belong to Calvary Memorial
Church in Racine, where for many years she enjoyed teaching Sunday school.
She also enjoyed listening to gospel music, playing piano and reading her
Bible. She especially enjoyed spending time with her husband, children and
her sisters.
Randi was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Morris Hansen, and two
sisters, Anna Hansen and Ruth Trask.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Schmitt of Crystal Falls; four
children, Yvonne (Ed) Willis of Racine, Fred (Karen) Schmitt of Racine,
Larry (Virginia) Schmitt of Miami, Fla., and Darlene (Bob) Taylor of Crystal
Falls; seven grandchildren, Jeanne Willis of Racine, Larry (Sherri) Schmitt
of Boynton Beach, Fla., Dan (Karen) Schmitt of Fayetteville, Ga., Mike
(Julie) Willis of Racine, Steve (Karen) Schmitt of Racine, Chris Willis of
Racine, Liz (Jerry) McCann of Kenya, Africa; 11 great-grandchildren, Kevin,
Amber, Josh, Brieanna and Nathan Willis, Rebecca, Katie, Laura, Stephanie,
Brittany and Shelby Schmitt, and four sisters, Sigrid Raymond of Iron
Mountain, Lilly (Darwin) Wilson of Iron Mountain, Carole (Richard) Smart of
Quinnesec and Donna (Jerry) Kriegl of Quinnesec.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon &
Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m.
Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. Ronald Wolfe will officiate. Burial will
be in Westlawn Cemetery in Racine.

SPREAD EAGLE, WI — Georgia L. Nick, 74, of 5030 Tall Pines Rd., Spread
Eagle, formerly of Milwaukee, WI, died Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at
Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born December 12, 1928 in Milwaukee, WI daughter of the late George
and Marie (Valente) Mueller.
Georgia married Frederick L. Nick on June 12, 1948 in Milwaukee, WI. He
preceded her in death on July 1, 1995.
She is survived by two sons, Daniel Nick of Spread Eagle, WI and Frederick
(Sam) Nick of Wauwatosa, WI; a brother, Edward Mueller of Del Ray Beach, FL;
three grandchildren, Freddy D, Zachary and Kaitlyn; and several nieces,
nephews and other relatives.
Private family services were held with Rev. Martin Koeller officiating.
Burial will be at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, WI.

Judith Kermeen
FLORENCE, Wis. — Judith Ann Kermeen, 63, of Florence, Wis., died Sunday,
Jan. 26, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born Jan. 18, 1940, in Milwaukee, daughter of the late William
Kermeen and Elsie Kelly.
Judith worked for Florence Villa Nursing Home as a nurses aide. She
collected frogs and owls. She was the “ultimate mother” raising six
children.
Judith is survived by three sons, Charles (Michelle) Ranta Jr. of Iron
Mountain, William Ranta of Lafayette, Colo., and Jesse (Elsie) Ranta of

Laverne E. Underwood 2-2-03
Laverne Underwood
FLORENCE, Wis. - Laverne E. Underwood, 78, of Emmet County, Mich., since
1962, and Florence County Wis. for the past three months, died Sunday, Feb.
2, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Laverne was born Sept. 12, 1924, in Alma, Mich., son of the late Glen and
Cloa Alma (Hall) Underwood. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World
War II and served as an airplane mechanic supporting the Flying Tigers in
the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operation. He married the former Mable Gibbs
on July 2, 1943, and had celebrated 59 years together. Laverne operated his
own excavating business for more than 20 years. He was a member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Laverne enjoyed motorcycling and belonged to
the motorcycle club in Petosky, Mich. He was also an avid woodworker and
especially enjoyed fishing and boating on the Crooked River.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mable on Nov. 3, 2002, and by a
brother, Frank Underwood.
Laverne is survived by his son, Les (Jana) Underwood of Florence; a sister,
Cynthia Towns of Auburn, Ind., and three grandchildren, Adam, Haley and Zak
Underwood.
Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be
established in his memory to the Alanson Beautification Center: Hillside
Gardens.

Carol Carl
FLORENCE, Wis. — Carol H. Carl, 63, of Keyes Lake, Florence, Wis., passed
away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at her home in the loving presence of her
family.
Carol was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Walter
and Helmie (Sjostrom) Gustafson. She graduated from Felch High School in
1958. She married Charles Carl on Sept. 14, 1963, at Our Saviour Lutheran
Church in Iron Mountain. Carol worked at the Commercial Bank for 37 years,
retiring in 1996 as vice president. She belonged to the ABWA and was a past
recipient of the Women of the Year Award and also an auxiliary member of the
Masonic Lodge. Carol was always filled with energy and loved the outdoors,
particularly enjoying golf, early morning paddle boat rides, flowers,
gardening and traveling. The last six winters she and Charles escaped the
cold season with friends in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Charles Carl; two sons, Jim
(Vanessa) Carl of Kingsford and Joe (Terry) Carl of Albuquerque, N.M.; a
brother, David (Karen) Gustafson of Midland, lower Michigan; six
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Erickson-Rochon &
Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain and from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday
at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will
follow at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Rev. Doug Johnson and Rev.
Stephen Cowen will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in
Florence, Wis.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Gustafson, Andy Wickman, Dean Wickman, Chris Maki,
David Shampo and Terry Hanson.

June Anderson
HOMESTEAD, Wis. — June H. Anderson, 79, of Homestead died Sunday, March 30,
2003, at Florence Villa Nursing Home in Florence, Wis.
June was born June 16, 1923, in Aurora, daughter of the late Oscar and
Jennie Peterson, and was raised on a dairy farm. She graduated from Iron
Mountain High School in 1941. Shortly after graduation she left for
Illinois. She married Ralph Anderson in Evanston, Ill., on Feb. 22, 1947. He
preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 2003. June worked in the Chicago area for
the General Adjustment Bureau as chief clerk, Kemper Insurance as
administrative assistant and Baxter Travenol Laboratories as quality control
supervisor. She retired to Homestead in 1982, and loved her home in the
northwoods. She was a member of the Aurora Free Church, Homestead Over 60
Club and the Cozy Corners Extension Club. June enjoyed writing poetry and
reading.
She was also preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and
Al Bock; a brother, Robert Peterson; a brother-in-law, Frank Gould and a
nephew, Eric Peterson.
June is survived by two sons, Glenn (Joan) Anderson of Cary, Ill., and Gary
(Candace) Anderson of Arlington Heights, Ill.; a daughter, Gayle (Ralph)
Halberstadt of Canton, Texas; six grandchildren, Bobbie Jo, Amanda, Tracey,
Andy, Shaun and Kyle; a great-granddaughter, Margaret Ann; two sisters,
Carolyn Gould of Florence, Wis., and Nancy (Robert) Norris of Aurora, Wis.;
a sister-in-law, Miriam Peterson of Pembine, Wis., and several nieces and
nephews. She loved them all dearly.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Aurora Free Church.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Rev. Karl Utzat
will officiate. Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora Cemetery.

Elaine Goffinet
IRON MOUNTAIN — Elaine E. Goffinet, 85, of 614 Beech St., Iron Mountain,
died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
She was born Jan. 31, 1918, in Florence, daughter of the late John E. and
Anna (St. Onge) Goffinet. She moved to Kingsford at a young age and was a
graduate of Kingsford High School Class of 1936. Elaine worked as several
local businesses, including W.B. Thompson Co. She moved to Chicago in 1958
and was employed as an office clerk for Zenith Radio until her retirement in
1971. In September 1971, she moved to Iron Mountain. She was a member of St.
Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosanna (Sheldon) Johnson and
Nathalie Goffinet.
She is survived by her cousins, Ronald St. Onge of Stamford, Conn., Donald
St. Onge of Stuart, Fla., Joyce Gartland of Jupiter, Fla., Yvonne Metzger of
San Rafael, Calif., Florence St. Jacques of Pawtucket, R.I. and Lois Seelen
of Milwaukee.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Kingsford
Funeral Home. The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. at American Martyrs
Catholic Church. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery.

Marjorie McCallum
IRON MOUNTAIN — Marjorie E. McCallum, 81, of 848 East C St., Iron Mountain,
died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron
Mountain.
She was born Oct. 11, 1921, in Homestead, Wis., daughter of the late Henry
E. and Ruth (Swanson) Holtein. Marjorie was a 1939 graduate of Iron Mountain
High School. She married her husband, Max on Dec. 23, 1944, in Iron
Mountain. Marjorie loved collecting dolls. She enjoyed artwork, cooking and
scrapbooking. She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother who always
had a smile for everyone. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Henry C. “Hank” Holtein.
She is survived by her husband, Max; a son, Dan McCallum of Iron Mountain;
two daughters, Pat (Terry) Trempe of Kingsford and Debbie (William) Knutson
of Fence, Wis.; two brothers, Allyn (Janet) Holtein of Escanaba and Larry
(Marilyn) Holtein of Green Bay, Wis.; three grandchildren, Scott Trempe and
Steven Trempe, both of Kingsford and Michelle Cousineau of Iron Mountain; a
great-grandson, Jacob Cousineau; and several nieces and nephews.

Alice Miron
KINGSFORD — Alice Ruth Miron, 69, of 140 Balsam St., Kingsford, died
Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at her home.
She was born April 26, 1934, in Chicago, daughter of the late John and Suzie
(Volenchek) Zitzka. Alice married James Miron on Nov. 29, 1952, in Chicago
and he preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 1999. Alice moved to Aurora, Wis.
in 1969. She worked for Foley Marten for 17 years, retiring in 1996. After
her husband’s death, she moved to Kingsford in August of 2000. She was a
member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford. Alice loved to bake,
travel, read and she especially loved Christmas. “We will miss you so much
Mom.”
She is survived by three daughters, Karen (Douglas) Fredrickson of
Kingsford, Cynthia Krisik of Kingsford and Debra (Troy) Lysell of Indiana;
two sons, Dennis (Cindy) Miron of Kingsford and Alan (Carla) Miron of
Niagara, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Michelle, Jim, Carrie, Brian,
Christopher, Angela, Jennifer and Troy Jr.; two great-granddaughters,
Journey and Kendall; a brother, Robert (Marlene) Zitzka of Carpentersville,
Ill.; a sister-in-law, Emily Miron of Rapid River; a dear friend, Lee Milbow
of Kingsford; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Joseph, John, Adam, George
and Thomas Zitzka and a sister, Mary Butler.

Evelyn Paquin
NORWAY — Evelyn Paquin, 76, of 119 11th Ave., Norway, died Wednesday, June
11, 2003, at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.
She was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Kingsford, daughter of the late William and
Tillie (Lemay) Powell. Evelyn married Vertin “Packy” Paquin on Aug. 29,
1953. They owned and operated Evelyn’s Curve Inn in Spread Eagle, Wis., for
13 years. She also worked at the Four Lane Bar and Playboy Lounge for many
years until her retirement. Her greatest enjoyment was the many camping and
fishing trips with her husband over their years together. He preceded her in
death in 1990. Evelyn also loved spending time with her family and
grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Ron (Barb) Waeghe of South Gate, lower
Michigan, and Rick (Maureen) Paquin of Iron Mountain; a daughter, Candy
(Don) Cavaiani of Appleton, Wis.; two brothers, Fred (Cindy) Powell of
Kingsford and Jack (Marie) Veraghen of Kingsford; a sister, Vivian Powell of
Arkansas; eight grandchildren, Sheryl (Jim) Beri, Lisa Cavaiani, Dawn Marie
(Ramon) Lopez, Angela (Jeff) Hoffman, Paul Cavaiani, Rick Cavaiani, Nick and
Tony Fleury, and six great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was also preceded in death by her siblings, Agnes Jackson, Lloyd (Bucky)

Helmi Rice
KINGSFORD — Helmi (Lamprecht) Rice died peacefully in her sleep at Dickinson
County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain on Sunday, June 29, 2003.
She had been a resident of Florence Villa Nursing Home since October of
1999. Helmi was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Gladstone, daughter of the late
William and Ida (Linti) Hanson. She lived in Kingsford most of her life and
graduated from Kingsford High School in 1934. She married Louis G. Lamprecht,
in 1937, and was married for 39 years. She later married Frank G. Rice, in
1979, and was married for 19 years. Helmi worked as a nurses aide and in the
laundry department at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron
Mountain, retiring after many years of service. She enjoyed music, dancing
and reading. She was a devoted caregiver for her family.
Helmi is survived by three children, Louis H. (Rubie) Lamprecht of
Milwaukee, Irene Ackerman of Kingsford and Ken (Clare) Lamprecht of Crystal
Falls; six grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Carol Taylor;
16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Louis G. Lamprecht, in 1976,
and Frank G. Rice, in 1998; a son-in-law, Nick Ackerman, in 1998; a
grandson, David Ackerman, in 2003; three sisters and seven brothers.
Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kingsford
Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral

IRON MOUNTAIN — Wayne Hollon, 39, of Iron Mountain died Saturday, July 5,
2003, in Florence County as a result of a boating accident.
He was born March 22, 1964, in Chicago, son of the late Robert and Barbara (Holst)
Hollon.
Wayne loved composing music, writing songs and poems, playing the keyboard
and art.
He was well loved and will be sadly missed by those who knew him.
Wayne is survived by two sons, Jeremy and Peter, both of Mississippi; his
maternal grandparents, Betty (Leo) Holst of Lancaster, Calif.; two sisters,
Michelle (Michael) Barone of Kingsford and Rebecca Flanagan of Burbank,
Ill., and three brothers, Steven (Juanita) Hollon of Chicago, Mark (Lisa)

Raymond Owens
AURORA, Wis. — Raymond R. Owens, 51, of Aurora died Saturday, July 12, 2003,
at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born April 2, 1952, in Chicago, and had lived in this area for the
past 18 years. Ray worked as a deputy sheriff for the Florence County
Sheriff’s Department. He married the former Machelle Williams on Feb. 27,
2003. Ray was a gifted woodworker and loved creating things with wood. He
was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting. Ray was a great storyteller. He
was very much a people person. He loved children and had the patience of a
saint. He also loved living on the river and spending time out on his boat.
Ray was preceded in death by his father, Richard Owens.
He is survived by his wife, Machelle; his mother, Delores Owens of Elmhurst,
Ill.; a son, Michael Owens of Crandon, Wis.; two daughters, Samantha Owens
of Green Bay, Wis., and Stacey Owens of Chicago; a stepson, Tyler Austin at
home; two stepdaughters, Nicole Austin and Alexa Austin, both at home; a
brother, Glen (Nancy) Owens of Bloomingdale, Ill.; a grandson, Alexis Owens,
and a niece and a nephew.

KINGSFORD — Eric M. De Grave, 21, of Appleton, Wis., formerly of
Kingsford, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, in Appleton.
He was born Oct 18, 1981, in Iron Mountain. Eric was a tender hearted,
soft spoken person that will be forever be missed by all who knew and
loved him.
He is survived by his father, Dennis (Kathy) DeGrave of Florence,
Wis.; his mother, Roxanne Doda of Kingsford; his paternal grandmother,
Betty DeGrave of Florence; maternal grandmother, Connie Doda of Spread
Eagle, Wis.; brothers, Travis DeGrave of Kingsford, and Adam Francis
of Kingsford; sisters, Tonya DeGrave of Kingsford and Tika DeGrave of
Florence, and many cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Russell Scott
IRON MOUNTAIN — Russell “Hap” Scott, 77, of 1100 Detroit Ave., Iron
Mountain, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at his home following a short illness.
Hap was born Dec. 14, 1925, in Duluth, Minn., son of the late Russell W. and
Margaret (Burns) Scott. He was raised in Wausau, Wis. and the family moved
to Florence, Wis. in 1940. He graduated from Florence High School and
attended Michigan Technological University and the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Hap married Eileen Flatley on June 10, 1950, in Kenosha,
Wis. He owned and operated Standard Service & Supply Co. with his brother,
Jerry Scott and his father, the late Russell W. Scott, who founded the
company in 1946. The company was sold to Michigan Air Gas in 1988.
He was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain
and was a former member of Pine Grove Country Club, the Chippewa Club, the
American Welding Society, Dickinson County Pilots Association and the
Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club. He loved flying and was an experienced
pilot for more than 35 years. He also enjoyed boating and traveling.
Hap was preceded in death by a daughter, Marrijane Romagnoli; a grandson,
Thomas Reiten; and a brother, Jerold Scott.
Hap is survived by his wife, Eileen; four children, Russell “Pat” (Sally)
Scott of Merriman, Susan Reiten of Seattle, Wash., Tom (Kathleen) Scott of
Glencoe, Ill. and Carol Scott of Schaumberg, Ill.; two sons-in-law, Steven
Reiten and Dwight Romagnoli, both of Iron Mountain; two brothers-in-law,
James Flatley of Coco Beach, Fla. and Thomas Flatley of Waupun, Wis.; a
sister-in-law, Jean Scott of Spread Eagle, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral services will be at 11 a.m.

AURORA — Marie K. Smith, 96, of Aurora, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at
Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.
Marie was born Jan. 14, 1907, in Aurora, daughter of the late Ignatz and
Katherine (Kaempher) Schnieder. She married the late Herbert G, Smith in
January, 1926. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1950. Together, they
operated a dairy farm in Aurora for over 35 years. She was a member of the
Sacred Heart Church in Aurora. Marie was a excellent baker and she loved
being with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Victor and Herbert
Schnieder, Herbert Schwinn; and three sisters, Gretchen Strand, Elizabeth
Mancell, and Henrietta Schaub.
Marie is survived by her daughters, Rosebud Sunich of Antioch, Ill., Marie
(Dennis) Ahearn of Menominee and JoAnn (Ronald) Erickson of Spread Eagle,
Wis.; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-
grandchildren.

Raymond Van Haute
AURORA, Wis. — Raymond L. Van Haute, 86, of 1727 County Road N, Aurora,
Wis., died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
Ray was born Jan. 27, 1917, in Aurora, the son of the late Leo and Mary (DeClark)
Van Haute. He was a veteran of World War II, serving 3 1/2 years in the
Aleutian Islands, Italy, France and Germany. While serving his country he
received the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with one
Bronze Star, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with four
Bronze Stars. Ray married Doris Anderson on Sept. 4, 1948, at the First
Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. He delivered milk for Wahlstom’s Dairy in
Aurora for 25 years. Ray enjoyed woodworking and spending time in the woods
logging with his horses. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Aurora and the Florence Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara Weaver and LaVanna Olson, and
one brother, Leonard Van Haute.
Ray is survived by his wife, Doris; three children, Donna (Robert) Holton of
Aurora, Allen (Mary) Van Haute of Green Bay, Wis., and Marlene (Larry)
Ethier of Rock Springs, Wyo.; a brother, Henry “Cotton” (Dorothy) Van Haute
of Kingsford; six grandchildren, Paul and Tracie Holton, Kathryn and Andy
Ethier, and Amanda and Allison Van Haute; three great-grandchildren, Brian,
Nikki, and Caitlynn Holton; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon &
Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m.
Friday at the funeral home and at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Aurora. Fr. Mike Betley will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in Homestead-Aurora Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Don DeClark, Don Hoaglund, Ralph Hoaglund, Clarence
Osterberg, John Zoeller, and Bruce Walstrom.

R. Murray Newman
HOMESTEAD, Wis. — R. Murray Newman, 82, of Homestead, Wis., died, Saturday,
Oct. 18, 2003 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
Murray was born Oct. 10, 1921, in Muskegon, Mich., son of the late Robert
and Evadna (Murray) Newman. He served during World War II as seaman first
class with the United States Navy. He received his bachelor of science
degree from Michigan Technological University. He married the former
Lorraine Pavlat on July 29, 1944, in Iron Mountain. She preceded him in
death on June 3, 1997. Murray was employed for 40 years as managerial
engineer in fire research for Factory Mutual Engineering Corporation in
Norwood, Mass., retiring in 1983. He has been a resident of this area since
1983. Murray was a member of the Shriner’s. He was a life master with the
duplicate bridge and played bridge with two of the local bridge clubs. He
loved to play bridge, enjoyed fishing and was known for being a very low key
man with a tremendous sense of humor.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kendall, and
a sister, Mary Beth.
Murray is survived by his daughter, P.K. Newman of Homestead; his son, Jeff
(Jan) Newman of Boston, Mass.; three grandchildren, Nicole, Kristen, and
Eric Newman, and three nieces including a special niece, Kendra Tourre.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Erickson-Rochon &
Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Ric Butikus will officiate.

Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Myrtle Freeberg
HOMESTEAD, Wis. — Myrtle Cecelia Freeberg, 91, formerly of Homestead, Wis.
and recently of Green Bay, Wis., died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at St. Mary’s
Hospital in Green Bay.
She was born Feb. 24, 1912, in Iron River and moved to Homestead, Wis. as a
young child. She later married Evert Freeberg on Oct. 16, 1937, and they
lived in Homestead. She had been living in the Green Bay, Wis. area for the
past six years. Myrtle was a member of the Homestead Baptist Church and
attended the Suamico Methodist Church while living in the Green Bay area.
She taught Sunday school for 50 years at Homestead Baptist Church and was
active in all aspects of the church. She was past president of the Florence
County School Board, a 4-H leader for many years, served on the Florence
County Aging Board for about 15 years, and helped start an Alzheimer Support
Group in the Iron Mountain area.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Evert Freeberg and three
brothers, Albert, John and Carl Gremore.
She is survived by two daughters; Charlotte (Frank) Meshigaud of Green Bay
and Betty Freeberg of Madison, Wis.; two grandchildren, John Meshigaud of
Waupaca, Wis. and Jill Meshigaud of Coleman, Wis.; three sisters, Jeanette
(Frank) Yadro of Homestead, Berdine (Kenneth) Olson of Homestead and Marcia
(Howard) LePine of Florence, Wis.; many nieces, nephews and many others who
adopted her as their “Grandma”.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Homestead
Baptist Church in Homestead, Wis. Funeral services will be held Saturday at
11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Bradley Moore will officiate. Burial will be in
the Homestead-Aurora Cemetery.

Ethel Oman
AURORA, Wis. — Ethel Alice Oman, 97, a longtime resident of Aurora, Wis.,
died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Parmly Senior Housing Facility in Chisago
City, Minn.
Prior to that, she had lived with her daughter, Janet Bjorklund and her
family in Forest Lake, Minn. She had lived in Minnesota for two years.
Ethel was born March 25, 1906, in Aurora. She spent her working years in
Chicago and was a social case worker in the Florence County Area.
She married Clifford R. Oman and the couple lived in Iron Mountain while
Clifford worked for the Ford Motor Co. in Kingsford. They later moved to
Detroit in 1950 and Clifford continued to work for Ford. Clifford retired in
1966 and they moved back to Aurora.
Ethel was a member of the Aurora Free Church. She was very active with the
church, using her cooking and baking skills for any event the church needed.
She very much enjoyed all the people who stopped to visit her every day,
especially the Osterberg family. Knitting and sewing were some of her
favorite activities.
Ethel and Clifford did a great deal of traveling throughout the United
States, visiting 49 of 50 states, and all of the provinces of Canada. They
enjoyed hiking in mountains, including in the Olympic Mountains located in
the state of Washington. Ethel also visited relatives in Sweden and other
countries in Europe.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford in November, 1983.
She is survived by one daughter, Janet (Alden) Bjorklund of Forest Lake,
Minn.; three grandchildren, Kristine (Greg) Lilly of St. Louis Park, Minn.,
Lara Bjorklund of Oakdale, Minn., and Kraig Bjorklund of Forest Lake, Minn.;
one brother, Willard Osterberg of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister-in-law,
Margaret Osterberg of Florence, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Aurora Free
Church.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the church. Rev. Karl Utzat
officiated. The grandchildren served as pallbearers.
Burial was in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Henry Van Haute
KINGSFORD— Henry “Cotton” Van Haute, 84, of 945 Woodward Ave., Kingsford,
died, Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center
in Iron Mountain.
Cotton was born June 11, 1919, in Aurora, Wis., son of the late Leo and Mary
(DeClark) Van Haute. Cotton married June Fisher on Jan. 1, 1942, in
Milwaukee. She preceded him in death on July 7, 1992.
Cotton was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II who served in the 36th
Infantry Division-Anti-Tank Company, 142nd Infantry of the U.S. Army. He
received many awards and medals to prove his valor and service to his
country. Cotton’s collection of medals and badges includes the American
Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern
Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars, the World War II Victory
Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star, the Honorable Service
Lapel Button-World War II, the Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar and the
Marksman Badge with Tank Bar.
Cotton married Dorothy Kowalkowski on May 1, 1993, in Florence, Wis.
He loved wildlife (especially birds), enjoyed hunting and was an avid trout
fisherman.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard and Raymond Van Haute; two
sisters, Lavana Olson and Clara Weaver; and an infant son.
Cotton is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, Terry (Jan) Van Haute; a
daughter, Darcia (Phillip) Johnson; step children, Thomas (Darcy)
Kowalkowski, James (Laurie) Kowalkowski, Edward (Kim) Kowalkowski, Nancy
(Michael) Dulek, Sandra (Marvin) Freeman, David (Melissa) Tatar, Betty
(Richard) Swanson, and Tony (Barb) Tatar; 25 grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Private family services will be held.

Alvin Miller
FLORENCE, Wis. — Alvin Howard “Alvie” Miller, 71, of Keyes Lake in Florence,
Wis., formerly of Kingsford, died unexpectedly on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at
Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born May 15, 1932, in Kingsford, son of Bert and Alice (Fezzat)
Miller. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1951. He lived in
Kingsford all his life until 1993, when he and his wife moved to their
retirement home on Keyes Lake.
Upon graduation from high school, Alvie enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving
his country in the United States and in Germany.
He married Corrine (Corky) Balzola in August of 1955. They raised three
children together.
Alvie enjoyed all sports. He coached and played baseball for many seasons.
He was a constant and enthusiastic face in the stands at Flivver Field,
supporting “his” school and especially this year, proudly watching his
granddaughter cheer and her classmates play. He was also an avid golfer and
enjoyed his boat and the wildlife on the lake. Alvie and Corky wintered in
Myrtle Beach enjoying friends, golf and the ocean.
Alvie always had a kind word, a friendly hug and a huge smile for everyone
he knew. He loved people and people loved him. He enjoyed his family,
especially his grandchildren. He loved to take them boating and watch them
enjoy the water at his home. He had many friends and will be truly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jean in 1973; his
brothers, Harold and David; his sister, Viola Carlson and his favorite
mother-in-law, Margaret Balzola.
Alvie is survived by his wife, Corrine; his son, Steve (Mary) of Iron
Mountain; his son, Chris (Catherine) of DePere, Wis.; his grandchildren,
Stephanie, Nicholas, Matthew and Claire; his brothers, Norman and Arnold
(Mary); his sisters, Arvella Rudd, Shirley (William) Grailer and Rosemary
(Donald) Phillips; his sisters-in-law, Gertrude Miller and Connie Balzola
Flemington; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon
& Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

Irving G. Olsen
KINGSFORD — Irving G. Olsen, 85, of 1864 Mary’s Way, Kingsford, formerly of
Escanaba, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green
bay, Wis.
Irving was born on May 5, 1918, in Homestead, Wis., the son of the late
Einar and Ruth (Mild) Olsen. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1935
and from business school in 1938.
He served with the United States Army for four years during World War II and
was honorably discharged as a captain with the Transportation Corps.
He married Wanda Gross on Jan. 10, 1942, in Aurora, Wis.
Irving began his working career with Kalamazoo Stove and Furnace in sales
and later as Upper Peninsula district manager until 1942. Transportation was
to remain his interest for many years as he joined the Cochran Freight Lines
in Iron Mountain in 1947 as operations manager and then had the same
responsibility with Clairmont Transfer. He moved to Escanaba in 1964 to
become the executive vice president and general manager of Clairmont. In
1973, Irving retired as vice president and general manager after 25 years
with the company.
After retirement, he worked part-time in public relations for the State Bank
of Escanaba and later as industrial relations representative for the
Escanaba Foundation.
Irving was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Iron Mountain. He
was active in the Dickinson County Chamber of Commerce while in Iron
Mountain and the Delta County Chamber of Commerce in Escanaba. He had also
worked on fund-raising drives for a variety of charities.
He was active in the Masonic Order including the Consistory and Shrine. He
was past president of the Wisconsin Trucking Association and past president
of the Chippewa Club. His family was his life. He enjoyed remodeling,
carpentry, skiing and golfing. He had a hole-in-one at the Lake Bluff
Country Club in 1997.
Irving was preceded in death by two sisters, Arlene Olson and Doris DeClark.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda; his sons, Glenn (Judy) Olsen of
Coudersport, Pa., Gary (Debbie) Olsen of Escanaba, Greg (Julie) Olsen of
Strongsville, Ohio and Gene (Colleen) Olsen of Manitowoc, Wis.; a brother,
Roland (Judy) Olsen of Iron Mountain; a sister, Carol (Lloyd) Pryor of
Kingsford; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the
Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
Rev. Michael March and Rev. David Anderson will co-officiate.

Verle Klungness
SPREAD EAGLE, Wis. — Verle R. Klungness, 75, of Spread Eagle, Wis. and
Scottsdale, Ariz., died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at her home
in Scottsdale.
Verle was born in Iron Mountain on Aug. 1, 1928, daughter of the late Ruth
and Ivar Anderson. She was a graduate of Iron Mountain High School in 1946
and then continued her education at Albion College in Albion, lower
Michigan.
She graduated from Albion College, Phi Beta Kappa in 1950 with a bachelor of
science degree in home economics. She taught school in Ishpeming for one
year and then married James A. Klungness of Kingsford on June 23, 1951.
Verle continued teaching for another 1 1/2 years in Channing until the birth
of her first child. She then decided to be a full-time mother and wife.
Verle has been a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was
a member of PEO Chapter CX for more than 40 years. Education was very
important to Verle and she set up a scholarship fund for qualifying Iron
Mountain and Kingsford high school students who wished to attend Albion
College.
She was also very generous to people in need, civic projects and local
charities. She cultivated many friendships throughout her life and
maintained close contact with those she loved wherever her travels took her.
Verle is survived by her husband, Jim; two children, Kraig (Kate Alvord) and
Barbara, both of Houghton; three grandchildren, Nelson, Christine and Lorna
Sommerfeldt of Houghton and a special four legged friend, Kinzy.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11
a.m. on Saturday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron
Mountain. Rev. Dr. Meredith Rupe of Trinity United Methodist Church will
officiate.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Honorary pallbearers will be Nelson Sommerfeldt, Bob VanLaanen, Larry Meyer
and John Meyer.

Kenneth Bailey
AURORA, Wis. — Kenneth H. Bailey, 80, of Aurora, died Monday, Feb. 2,
2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born on March 10, 1923, in Ladysmith, Wis., the son of the late
Fred and Ida (Nelson) Bailey. Ken was a resident of this area for most
of his life.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and he had worked for
Boeing Aircraft for 15 years. He also worked for Schultz Equipment for
16 years before retiring.
Ken married Dorothy (Jacobson) Hord on June 28, 1969, at First
Methodist Church in Iron Mountain.
He enjoyed salmon fishing, gardening, and the coffee crew at B’s Cafe.
Ken is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Carol Ann
(Maynard) Engeland; and one granddaughter, Alica Engeland, all of
Renton, Wash.; one brother, Neil (Audrey) Bailey of Enumclew, Wash.;
one sister, Nathalie Miller of Crivitz, Wis.; and one sister-in-law,
Katherine Bailey of Waterloo, Iowa; two stepchildren, Corinne (John)
Dibiasi of Bark River and Doug (Bonnie) Hord of Aurora; three
step-grandchildren, Jason and Jesse Hord of Milwaukee and Andria (Cris)
Nichols of Bamberg, Germany; and two step great-grandchildren, Kalvin
and Kelina Nichols.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Lillian; two brothers, Arthur
“Bud” Bailey and Allen Bailey; and one step-grandson, Darren Dibiasi.

Donya Freeberg-Dobinski
FLORENCE, Wis. — Donya Joyce Freeberg-Dobinski, 38, of Florence, Wis.,
died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay,
Wis.
She was born Jan. 13, 1966, in Iron Mountain, daughter of Gary and
Sharon (Wood) Freeberg.
She graduated from Kimberly High School Class of 1984. She formerly
lived in the Fox Valley area, and was employed at Copps Food Market.
Donya was a very loving and caring individual. She enjoyed making
floral arrangements, walking in the woods with her dog Duce, reading,
and listening to music. She collected crystal sun catchers, Beanie
babies, unicorns, bears, and snowmen.
Donya is survived by her parents, Gary and Sharon Freeberg; her fiance’
and special friend, Bruce Wood and his daughter Megan of Sheboygan,
Wis.; her uncles, Vance (Frances) Freeberg of Homestead, Wis., Ernest
(Kim) Freeberg of Iron Mountain, and Clark (Patricia) Wood of Deltona,
Fla.; her aunt, Helen (Larry) Marheine of Kimberly, Wis., and numerous
cousins. Other survivors include; aunts Patricia Wood and Marilyn
Wood, both of Iron Mountain and Vivian Wood of Spread Eagle, Wis. and
an uncle, Joseph Groleau of Iron Mountain.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Leonard and
Lottie Wood of Kingsford; her paternal grandparents, Karl and Ardith
Freeberg; four uncles, Lyle Wood, Marvin Wood, Floyd Wood, and John
Trulock; two aunts, Joyce Groleau and Delores Trulock; and a special
cousin, Debbie Duncan.

August Heirman
AURORA, Wis. — August George Heirman, 95, formerly of Aurora and of
Evergreen Assisted Living, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at ManorCare
Health Services in Kingsford.
He was born on May 20, 1908, in Norway, son of the late Henry and
Florentine (Gyselinck) Heirman.
He and his family moved to Chicago in 1916, and that was where he was
raised. He married Mary (Marie) Kuchan on Oct. 31, 1936, in Chicago,
and she preceded him in death after 40 years of marriage.
August’s jobs included driving movie stars around the city of Chicago,
the Aragon Ballroom as a dance instructor, Mills Industries as a
supervisor making airplane parts during World War II and at Victor
Adding Machines as a supervisor, where he retired at the age of 63.
Upon retirement, he moved to Aurora and has lived there for 36 years.
August enjoyed fishing and dancing. He was an avid Cubs fan and loved
cars.
He is survived by a daughter, Sheila Pielach Cummings of Kingsford;
three grandchildren, Susan P. (Robert) Bauske, Judy P. (Terrence)
Taaffe and Stephen Pielach; five great-grandchildren, Kyle and Jazz
Bauske, and Cayley, Conlon, and Luke Taaffe; a sister, Bernice Adams;
a very special friend, Viola Christenson; and a special sister-in-law,
Lenore Heirman.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur, George, and Albert
Heirman.
Visitation will be on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the
Kingsford Funeral Home in Kingsford.
The funeral service will be on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral

Duane Lidbeck
IRON MOUNTAIN — Duane R. Lidbeck, 71, of 724 East D St., Iron Mountain, died
Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Duane was born May 26, 1932, in Aurora, Wis., son of the late Simon and Florence
(Markosen) Lidbeck. He had been a lifelong resident of the area.
He married the former Janet Uren on Sept. 18, 1954, in Iron Mountain. Duane
operated the family farm in Aurora for many years and also worked for Hancock
Wood Products for more than 30 years, retiring in 1994.
He loved to camp and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and building model

Christopher Michaud, Robert Michaud, Tyler Uhazie, Alyssa Uhazie, Dawn Marie
Meyers, and Jason (Jessica) Lidbeck; and three great-grandchildren, Makenna,
Preston and Marcus.
Duane was also preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey; and two brothers, Warren
and Curtis Lidbeck.

Caryl Ann Powell
SPREAD EAGLE, Wis. — Caryl Ann Powell, 81, of Tall Pines Road, Spread Eagle,
died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Dickinson County Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Caryl was born Dec. 21, 1922 in Chicago Heights, Ill., the daughter of the late
Angus James and Margaret (Hoberman) McLaughlin. She graduated from Bloom
Township High School in 1941.
She married Jack Eslick Powell at the family home in Chicago Heights, in the
garden, and he preceded her in death on June 28, 1978.
Caryl worked for Victor Chemical in Chicago testing bomb components during World
War II, and because of this job her finger prints are on file with the FBI.
She also worked for the City of Fort Wayne in the auditing department, helping
them convert to computers. Caryl also worked for Basil Smeester at True Value in
plumbing, and as a kitchen designer.
She was also an excellent seamstress and upholsterer. In her spare time she
enjoyed golfing.
Caryl is survived by four children, Christy Powell of Kingsford, Rae Powell of
Lakeport, Calif.,Caryl Powell of Santa Rosa, Calif. and John (Debbie) Powell of
Rolling Meadows, Ill; a brother, James McLaughlin of Chicago Heights; sisters,
Patricia Campbell of Houston and Janet Egan of Sedona, Ariz.; grandchildren,
Ashley and Travis Jones, and Jacob and Jeremy Powell.
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the
Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

IRON MOUNTAIN — Judy J. Thom, 65, of Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, May 19,
2004, at Florence Villa Nursing Home following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on Jan. 30, 1939, in Ironwood, the daughter of the late Wilson and
Esther (Johnson) Coxey. She graduated from Ironwood High School.
Judy worked as a home health worker for the state of Michigan. She enjoyed
reading, knitting, gardening, camping, and her cats. She loved her children and
grandchildren very much.
She is survived by four sons, Peter Thom of Orlando, Fla., Gary (Lauri) Thom of
Aurora, Wis., David Thom (Karen Nichols) of Aurora, Wis., and Wayne (Ellen) Thom
of Aurora, Wis.; a daughter, Jodie Anderson of Niagara, Wis.; one brother,
Griffen Coxey of Reedsburg, Wis.; two sisters, Patty Kauppi of Lawrenceville,
Ga. and Amy Thom of Clearwater, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Kelsy Rae Thom, Aimee
Thom, Adam Thom, Mathew Thom, Andy Thom, Jill Anderson, Erin Salamone, and Becky
Anderson.
Graveside services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Homestead-Aurora

IRON MOUNTAIN — Alfred “Fritz” Cerasoli, 87, of 104 E. Fleshiem St., Iron
Mountain, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Florence Villa Nursing Home.
Fritz was born Aug. 23, 1916, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Alphonse and
Bambina (Fontecchio) Cerasoli. He resided in the area his entire life.
Fritz married Nora McMahon on May 4, 1938, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Iron
Mountain.
He worked as a truck driver for the city of Iron Mountain for 35 years, retiring
in 1978. He was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Fritz
enjoyed gardening and hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nora; a son, Ron (Patricia) Cerasoli of
Kingsford; a daughter-in-law, Sheri Cerasoli of Iron Mountain; a sister, Nelda
Fornetti of Iron Mountain; five grandchildren, Todd (Patti Kramer) Cerasoli,
Rhonda (Roland) Beeck, Lisa (Pete) Weaver, Lora Cerasoli and Richard A. “Rick” (fiance’
Jen Tyrrell) Cerasoli; and three great-grandchildren, Trish, Krista and Miranda
Steinbrecher.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard “Dick” Cerasoli; three brothers,
Tony, Faust and Victor Cerasoli; and three sisters, Mary Secinaro, Theresa
Biedrezski and Peggy Ganga.

She was born June 19, 1916, in Chippewa, Wis., the daughter of the late Joseph

Laura enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, fishing, reading books, and doing
crossword puzzles. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

great-grandchildren.

Hazel Hellman
AURORA, Wis. — Hazel Hellman, 89, of Aurora, Wis., found peace on Wednesday,
July 14, 2004, at Florence Villa Nursing Home.
Hazel was born on May 21, 1915, daughter of the late Jack and Mary (Koebler)
Johnson.
On Jan. 25, 1935, Hazel married Robert Hellman. He preceded her in death in
1980.
Hazel’s love and affection will be missed by her daughter, Donna (Edwin)
Weinfurter of Aurora and her three grandchildren, Randy (Michelle) Weinfurter,
Terry (Lori) Weinfurter, both of Aurora, and Jody (David) Bigalke of Niagara.
Her love and affection will also be missed by her great-grandchildren, Daniel
and Kaitlin, Andrea, Sarah and Adam, Amanda and Ashley and her
great-great-grandchildren, MiKayla and Cody; her sister-in-law, Berdine Johnson
and all of her very special friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her
brother, Clifford Johnson; and a sister, Ethel Johnson.
Hazel loved to go golfing, bowling, going to the casinos, her flowers and making
afghans.
Hazel touched the hearts of each and every one of us and will continue to live
in our hearts forever.

COMMONWEALTH, Wis. — Oliver E. Holmberg, 91, of Commonwealth, Wis., died Monday,
Aug. 23, 2004, at the Florence Villa Nursing Home.
He was born on March 2, 1913, in Homestead, Wis., the son of the late Gustave
and Amanda (Johnson) Holmberg.
He married June Fraker on April 3, 1939. She preceded him in death on Aug. 14,
2002. He was a life long resident of the area.
Oliver is survived by two sons, Delore (Penny) Holmberg and Terry (Jeanne)
Holmberg, all of Commonwealth; one sister, Judith Moore; four grandchildren,
David (Sandy) Holmberg, Darren (Pam) Holmberg, Daniel Holmberg (Rhonda Rochon)
and Michelle Holmberg; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael, Haley, Kyle,
and Christopher Holmberg.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.

Robert Larson
KINGSFORD — Robert Larson, 57, of 412 Hooper St., Kingsford, died, Saturday,
Aug. 21, 2004, at Florence Villa Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
Bob was born Jan. 1, 1947, in Iron Mountain and been a lifelong resident of this
area. Bob worked as a pulp cutter in the forests of the Upper Peninsula and
Northeastern Wisconsin for many years.
He enjoyed the outdoors and spent many happy days hiking, hunting, and berry
picking in the surrounding area. He will be fondly remembered as a gentle man
who led a life of quiet simplicity and his family will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his mother, Beatrice Larson of Kingsford; five brothers and
sisters, Janet Schuirmann of Iron Mountain, Christine Larson of Iron Mountain,
Dale Larson of Kingsford, Bernard (Mary Jean) Larson of Kingsford and Kenneth
Larson of San Diego, Calif. and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, Allan.

Jody worked as a kitchen aide at Evergreen Assisted Living. She enjoyed playing
bingo, camping and going to rummage sales.
She married Jerry Rose on Nov. 1, 1986, at First United Methodist Church in Iron
Mountain.
Jody was preceded in death by her son, Calvin and her mother-in-law, Joan Rose.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry; two daughters, Brittany and Amanda, both
at home; three brothers, Randy (Denise) Larson of Iron Mountain, and Rick
(Joanne) Larson and Kenny Larson, both of Beloit, Wis.; four sisters, Marlene
(Tom) Leinen of St. Joseph, Mo. and Christine (Mike) Rousseau, Laura (Amos)

Dr. John Rahm
SPREAD EAGLE, Wis. — Dr. John Paul “J.P.” Rahm, 77, of Spread Eagle, died
Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
He was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Iron Mountain, son of the late J. Paul and Violet
(Sandine) Rahm. He was a graduate of Iron Mountain High School, class of 1945.
John served in the Navy during World War II.
J.P. did his undergraduate studies at Northern Michigan University and graduated
from the University of Michigan — School of Medicine. John began his career as a
surgeon in 1958 in Monona, Wis.
He married Betty Alaxson on Oct. 28, 1966, and they resided in Monona until his
retirement in 1995.
John was proud of his medical practice and enjoyed being a caregiver. He also
enjoyed golf, tennis, boating, and photography. Since retiring, they have
resided in Spread Eagle and Long Boat Key, Fla. John was a member of the First
Covenant Church and Longboat Island Chapel.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Rahm of Spread Eagle; four sons, Paul
(Cindy) Rahm of Sussex, Wis., Stig Rahm of Verona, Wis., Tory (Darcy) Rahm of
Denver, and Tim (Andrea) Rahm of Sheboygan, Wis.; one brother, Stan (Mary Ann)
Rahm of Minneapolis; six grandsons, Travis Hefty, Shawn Hefty, Justin Rahm,
Anders Rahm, Erik Rahm, and Jakson Rahm.

AURORA— Violet Wahlstrom Krans, 93, of Aurora,
Wis. died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron
Mountain.
She was born July 23, 1911, in Aurora, daughter of the late Gust and Anna
(Nelson) Wahlstrom. Violet graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1929, and
attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
She married Robert D. Krans on July 19, 1932. He preceded her in death on June
3, 1987.
Violet was a lifelong resident of Aurora. She was a long-standing member of the
Aurora Free Church and was a treasurer for the ladies aide for many years. She
was a member of the over 60’s Club of Homestead. She and her husband operated
the Quality Dairy Farm for many years. She enjoyed baking, traveling, and
spending time with her grandchildren.
Violet is survived by five daughters, Marilyn (Jack) Watson of Aurora, Audrey
(John Arvid) Carlson of Aurora, Loraine Larson of Aurora, Gayle Trible of Aurora
and Karen Andrusco of Sun Prairie, Wis.; 17 grandchildren; 41
great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Elmer, Alf, Leonard, and Lawrence
Wahlstrom and three sisters, Vera West, Eva Smail, and Ida Ringblom.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Aurora Free Church
and on Thursday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the church.

Neil Verberg
AURORA, Wis. — Neil Verberg, 71, of Aurora, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at the
VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
He was born Feb. 19, 1933, in Milwaukee, son of the late Walter and Alice (Bourdeau)
Verberg.
Mr. Verberg graduated from Kingsford High School in 1951. He served in the U.S.
Navy during the Korean War. Pick was a construction laborer for union Local 1329
of Iron Mountain.
He was very patriotic and was proud to be a member of the American Legion Post
136 of Niagara, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3635 of Florence and the 40et8
Voiture 659 of Iron Mountain. He was a very dedicated member of the American
Legion and ran its raffle for many years.
Pick enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his friends and family.
He married Irene Vivio on Jan. 17, 1959, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; two daughters, Rose (Roy) Allard of Kingsford
and Mary (fiancee Mike Stec) Verberg of Goodman, Wis.; one sister, Elizabeth
Courier of Elgin, Ill.; one granddaughter, Kimberly Allard of Kingsford; and
many nieces and nephews.

KINGSFORD — Marie D. Peters, 92, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at ManorCare
Health Services in Kingsford.
She was born June 9, 1912, in Florence, Wis., daughter of the late Fred and
Freda (Pultz) Miller. Marie helped raise many of the 10 children while living in
Alpha, helping her mother with many chores and duties.
She was married to Gera Peters of Fairbury, Ill. and he preceded her in death in
July 1996. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Rev. John Miller,
Fred “Fritz” Miller and Wilbur Miller.
Marie was an active member of the home extension programs, Royal Neighbors of
America and a faithful member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She was very well
liked by all that knew her and was always willing to help others.
She loved crafting and enjoyed driving her friends to church, rides in the
countryside, or to the fair and many other doings. She loved the outdoors,
fishing, berry picking with her brother, Bob and many other activities and
events.
Marie is survived by a son, Michael (Trish) Peters of Fairbury, Ill.; three
daughters, MaryLou (Bud) Burkart of Bloomington, Ill., Betty (Earl) Steffan of
Fairbury, Ill. and Charlotte (Stuart) Griffan of Fortville, Ind.; five brothers,
Charles, Bill and Jim Miller, all of Alpha, Clarence Miller of Wayne, lower
Michigan and Bob (Jeanne) Miller of Kingsford; a sister, Mae Nicholson of

Edwin Chrisman
AURORA, Wis. — Edwin C. Chrisman, 80, of Aurora, Wis., died on Tuesday, Nov. 23,
2004, at his home.
He was born Feb. 21, 1924, in Walker, Minn., son of the late Verne and Elizabeth
(DeGraaf) Chrisman. Edwin was raised in Aurora and was a graduate of Kingsford
High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the
Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
He married Virginia Isely on July 13, 1946, in Milwaukee, Wis.
Edwin worked for more than 30 years with the United States Postal Service. He
retired in 1979 as the postal operations specialist in Milwaukee.
Edwin was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church and a life member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), having served as charter commander and
quartermaster of the Aurora VFW Post.
He was also a life member of the American Legion. Edwin enjoyed golfing at Oak
Crest Golf Club and bowling at Recreation Lanes. He loved football and was an
avid Green Bay Packer fan.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his son, Ralph Chrisman of Milwaukee; two
daughters, Georgiann (Robert) Gelhar of Aurora and LeaAnn Chrisman of Fond du
Lac, Wis.; daughter-in-law, Frances Chrisman of Green Bay; four brothers, Rodger
(Linda) Chrisman and Ray (Pat) Chrisman, both of Aurora, Dick (Dolly) Chrisman
and Walt (Betty) Chrisman, both of Mukwonago, Wis.; four sisters, Joyce Pintar
of West Allis, Wis., Ollie Pedersen of Colorado, Frances (Duaine) Schaut of
Aurora and Vera (Marvin) Craig of Colorado; 12 grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Chrisman in 1998, four brothers,
and one sister.

Beatrice Malmberg
AURORA, Wis. — Beatrice Flesch Malmberg, 83, of Aurora, died Monday, Nov. 22,
2004, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
She was born May 18, 1921, in Eagle River, Wis., the daughter of the late Frank
and Rose J. (Vlach) Mills.
Mrs. Malmberg worked at Hancock Wood Products. She was an excellent cook and a
member of First Covenant Church. Beatrice was also fond of her dog, Max.
She married Richard Flesch in Chicago, and he preceded her in death in 1973. She

married in Florence.
Bea is survived by seven children, Donald (Sharon) Flesch of Brookfield, Wis.,
Terry (Betty) Flesch and Duane Flesch, both of Aurora, Sheryle Karcz of Green
Bay, Wis., James (Sue) Flesch of Kingsford, Robert Flesch of Aurora and
Rosemarie Flesch of Juneau, Wis.; two brothers, Douglas (Beatrice ) Mills of
Aurora and Edward (Joanne) Mills of Iron Mountain; two sisters, Shirley Wolsker
of Aurora and Bonnie (Darrell) Doggett of Lucedale, Miss.; eight grandchildren,
Nicole (Josh) Learned, Steven Flesch, Jamie Flesch, Amy (Jay) Pawling, Sara and
Nicolas Karcz, Richard Flesch, and Jennifer Flesch; four great-grandchildren and
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, George Flesch.
Visitation will be held Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Tondin-Ross &
Freeman Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First Covenant
Church. Rev. Peter Erickson will officiate the service.
Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora Cemetery.

Roy A. Hord
IRON MOUNTAIN — Roy A. Hord, 93, of Iron Mountain, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004,
at Manorcare Health Care Services in Kingsford.
He was born on Dec. 30, 1910, in Homestead, Wis., son of the late Fred and Signe
(Lindquist) Hord. Roy has been a lifelong resident of this area.
He married Lorna Opal Davis on Feb. 19, 1936, in Iron Mountain. She preceded him
in death on Nov. 1, 2004.
His family was the center of his life and he fully enjoyed his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Roy was a member of the First Covenant Church and active in the Gideons. He
retired in 2003 from Izzo’s Home Improvements after 50 years of dedicated
service.
Roy is survived by two sons, Duane (Lois) Hord of Cape Coral, Fla. and Crystal
Falls and Lloyd (Patty) Hord of Kingsford; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Hord; a
brother, Donald Hord of Lake Geneva, Wis.; three sisters, Dorothy (Albert)
Stenfors of Iron Mountain, Vera Rouse of Iron Mountain, and Gertie Bergstrom of
Hyland Nursing Home; a sister-in-law, Ethel Bryngelson of Marshall, lower
Michigan; seven grandchildren, Steve, Jeff, and Tammy Hord, Susan Brown and
James Hord, Scott and Jerrod Hord; nine great-grandchildren, Jason, Meagan,
Lisa, Mari Lee, Kaitlyn, Austin, Jaydon, Tyler, and Peyton.
He was preceded in death by a son, Fred in 1995 and three brothers, Herold,
Wilbur, and Willard Hord.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at First Covenant
Church in Iron Mountain. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the
church. Rev. Peter Erickson will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Jim Hord, Steve Hord, Scott Hord, Jeff Hord and Jerrod Hord.
Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

Robert Holton
AURORA, Wis. — Robert J. Holton, 58, of Aurora, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at
the V.A. Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
He was born on Oct. 1, 1946, in Crystal Falls, son of the late John and Gloria
(Gribble) Holton. Bob has been a lifelong resident of this area and graduated
from Florence High School.
He served with the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division
of the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1964-67. As a Specialist 4, his service
decorations include the Army Commendation Medal with V Devise for Valor, the
Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, National
Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 devise,
and the Purple Heart.
Bob married the former Donna VanHaute on July 6, 1968, at First Lutheran Church
in Iron Mountain.
He worked for 20 years for Hosking Tire Co. and 15 years at Michigan Airgas.
Bob was a member of Homestead Baptist Church. He served as Quartermaster for the
Aurora Veterans of Foreign Wars for many years. He was also a member of the
Aurora Volunteer Fire Department and was the fire warden in Aurora for 20 years.
Bob enjoyed hunting, working in the yard and plowing snow in the winter.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; his son, Paul (Roxanne) Holton of Niagara;
his daughter, Tracie (Daniel) Watts of Kingsford; two brothers, Greg (Sue)
Holmes of Niagara and Worth Holmes of Niagara; two sisters, Mary Jane (Richard)
Spade of Niagara and Geraldine (Gary) Smith of Homestead, Wis.; three
grandchildren, Brian Baldwin, Alyssa Holton, and Caitlynn Holton; and his
mother-in-law, Doris VanHaute of Aurora.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Carl Holmes; a
brother, John Holton; and his father-in-law, Raymond VanHaute.
Visitation will be on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon &
Nash Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be at noon on Saturday at the Homestead Baptist Church in
Homestead. Rev. Brad Moore will officiate.
Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora Cemetery.
A memorial will be established in his memory.

Donnell Mitchell
SPREAD EAGLE, Wis. — Donnell R. “Mitch” Mitchell, of Spread Eagle, died,
peacefully in the arms of family in his winter home in Fort Myers, Fla., Dec. 3,
2003, after a long battle with cancer. He was 79.
Born July 20, 1924, in Iron Mountain to Fredrick John and Ruth Johnson Mitchell,
he graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1942, then served as a ship’s
cook, 2nd class in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
After the war, he married Elizabeth Ebel and they settled in Kingsford, where he
served on the city council from 1953 to 1956, and as mayor in 1956. Later, he
served on the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors.
Mitch owned and operated the Iron Mountain Credit Bureau for more than 40 years,
retiring in 1997. He was an active member of Associated Credit Bureaus. He was a
longtime member of the American Legion, the Elks, 6-7-8 and the Chippewa Club
(serving as president in 1975).
Mitchell was the current president and served for many years as treasurer of the
Menominee Range Historical Foundation, which he founded in 1969 with Al and
Robert Hoyle. He devoted years of personal effort to renovating the current
museum and building its collection. He also chaired the Iron Mountain Centennial
Committee and spearheaded the effort to preserve Iron Mountain’s Cornish Pump
and have it placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
Mitch was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. He was a founding and longtime
member of Sundog Hunting Lodge and made many big-game trips to Canada, Alaska,
and the Rocky Mountains.
Mitch belonged to the Pine Grove Country Club, and, in recent years, played golf
almost daily in Florida during the winter and around the U.P. in the summers. In
1993, his foursome (along with Ralph Carlson, Guido Jafolla, and Tim Endelman)
won the Wisconsin Regionals of the Oldsmobile Scramble, qualifying to play in
the Net Division National Championship in Orlando, Fla. He was proud of his
three holes-in-one, the most recent in 2001.
A Green Bay Packers season ticket holder since 1959, Mitch spent many Sundays at
Lambeau Field and attended the first two Super Bowls to cheer the Packers to
victories.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth; six children, Maureen Piper
of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jeffrey (Christina) of Lindenhurst, Ill., Frederick of
Iron Mountain, Mary (Tim) Endelman of Iron Mountain, Michael of London, England
and Patricia (Jeff) Lemke of Cary, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; a brother, William of
Saginaw; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Erickson-Rochon &
Nash Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the
funeral home. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Ralph Carlson, James Verrette, Robert Rigoni, Dr. Newton
McCollough III, Brian Lucas, Zorba, Frederick Mitchell III, and Jordan Mitchell.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to
the Menominee Range Historical Foundation.
