| Florence Mining News Frank Ottlinger IRON MOUNTAIN — Frank M.”Dutch” Ottlinger, 89, loving husband of Carol Bouche Ottlinger of Iron Mountain, went to meet his Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at Florence Villa in Florence, Wis. Frank married Carol on Aug. 30, 1958, in Iron Mountain. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Frank worked as a mechanic for Peninsula Beverage for 25 years. Following his retirement from Pepsi, he worked a Les-Cove Cabinets and Rocconi Ace Hardware. Dutch enjoyed building and flying gas operated model airplanes. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol, who cared for him in his long illness for five years; sons Ken (Joleen) Ottlinger of Kansas, Mike (Wanda) Ottlinger of Dearborn, lower Michigan, and Rallund Ottlinger of Munising; daughters Linae (Francis) Rittenhouse of Appleton, Wis. and Kim Marie (Jeff) Wierikko of Sheboygan, Wis.; grandchildren, Kevin and Keith Ottlinger of Kansas, Joshua (Amy) Chodak of Appleton, Danielle Wierikko of California, Paige LeAnna Weirikko of Sheboygan, Hayley DoBas of Sheboygan, Desiree Ottlinger of California and Wendy and Jennifer Ottlinger of Dearborn, lower Michigan; great- grandchildren, Joshua Jr. and Elijah of Appleton, Wis. and Connor of Dearborn, lower Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Kathryn (Bering) Ottlinger; his brothers, Pete and Nick Ottlinger; and a sister, Marie Thorsen. | Florence Mining News Beatrice Neuens KINGSFORD — Beatrice L. Neuens, 85, of Evergreen Heights Assisted Living in Kingsford, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. She was born Aug. 28, 1920, in Santa Rosa, Calif., daughter of the late James and Charlotte (Eickmeyer) Clark. Bea graduated from Santa Rosa High School. She married Jacob Neuens on Jan. 20, 1940, in Aurora, Wis. He preceded her in death in 1950. Bea worked as a secretary for Wisconsin-Michigan Power Co. for many years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was active in the altar society. Bea volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop in Florence for several years. She enjoyed gardening, camping, basket weaving and playing cards with friends. Bea is survived by a daughter, Beverly (John) Whitley of Trenton, Mo.; two sons, Martin J. (Cindy) Neuens of Tucson, Ariz. and David L. Neuens of Castle Rock, Colo.; four grandchildren, Gerri Whitley of Chicago, Cara Whitley of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Tyson Neuens of Castle Rock, Colo. and Corey Neuens of Luke Air Force Base, Ariz.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Theodore Prosser Sr. and James Leland Clark. A memorial Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aurora. Fr. | Florence Mining News Herbert Christesen BREITUNG TOWNSHIP — Herbert J. Christesen, 90 of N3795 Bass Lake Road, Breitung Township, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at ManorCare Health Systems in Kingsford. He was born on Aug. 3, 1915, in Florence, Wis., son of the late Ellis and Elizabeth Christesen. Herbert graduated from Kingsford High School in 1933. He was married to his wife, the former Ada Knudsen, in 1937. They spent 68 wedded years together. He was employed with the Hoyle/Newberg Construction Co. and Lakeshore Inc. until his retirement. Herbert was member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. As a member through the years he served in various capacities. He was member of the council for many years, usher, and a member of the finance committee. Gardening, lawn work and visiting with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his favorite pastimes. Herbert was a devoted husband to his wife, Ada; father of three sons, Gerald, James (Noreen) and David (Carol), all of Iron Mountain; one daughter, Linda (Doug) Dodd of Norway; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Ellis (Norma) Christesen of Green Bay, Wis.; two sisters, Vivian (Joseph) Safranek of Waukesha, Wis. and Betty (Jerome) Molitor of West Village Lake, Calif. and many nieces and nephews. Herbert was preceded in death by his brother, William, of Milwaukee. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. at the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate. Burial will be at Iron Mountain Cemetery Park. Colantonio, 89, of 1820 Mary’s Way, formerly of 504 Norway St. in Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. She was born on Dec. 19, 1915, in Aurora, Wis., daughter of the late Axel and Anna (Carlson) Olson. She has been a lifelong resident of this area. She married Louis Colantonio on April 27, 1935, in Iron Mountain. They celebrated 70 years of marriage together. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the United Methodist women’s organizations. Bernice enjoyed reading, traveling, cooking and baking. She loved to knit and was known for her rose garden. Bernice was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching bowling, golf and football. She is survived by her husband, Louis; her son, Russell Colantonio of Iron Mountain; daughters, Jan (Gary) Pilon of Orlando, Fla. and Cheryl (Ben) Storey of Kirkland, Wash.; grandchildren, Scott, Kristie, Mark, Kelly, Stephen, Christopher and Matthew and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon in 1948 and by two brothers and two sisters. | Florence Mining News Orpha Blockland CHANNING — Orpha M. Blockland, 77, of Channing, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility. She was born on March 8, 1928, in Oconto, Wis., the daughter of the late Richard and Marion (Forstel) Peterson. Mrs. Blockland was a certified nurse’s aide at Florence Villa for more than 20 years. She was a longtime member of Grace Presbyterian Church and had a very strong faith. Orpha always liked to keep busy baking, especially pasties, cooking, canning, sewing, and embroidering. Orpha married Bert Blockland in Iron Mountain on Feb. 1, 1947. He preceded her in death on May 28, 1985. Orpha was a wonderful mother to Robert (Jayna) and Paul (Sandy), both of Channing, Ruth (Jerry) Leonard of Las Vegas, Nev., Marion (Rod) Johnson of Crystal Falls, and Naomi Blockland of Channing. She was the loving grandmother of Scott Blockland, Sean (Jessica) Blockland, Richard (Michelle) Blockland, Sherri Blockland, Dennis (Heather) Blockland, Kristina Blockland, Faith (John) Kuzak, Jason (Michelle) Johnson, and David Johnson. She is also survived by two sisters, Manette Devroy of Green Bay, Wis. and Marlene (Conrad) Kramer of Sagola; one brother, Richard (Betty) Peterson, nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was born Oct. 13, 1935, in Peshtigo, Wis., son of the late Gustav and Emma (Gove) Krause. Herb lived most of his life in the Marinette-Menominee area. In 1999, he moved to Aurora and has been a resident there ever since. He loved hunting and fishing, and enjoyed early American heritage and history. The past few years, Herb enjoyed traveling. | Florence Mining News Clarence Walstrom QUINNESEC— Clarence E. Walstrom, 85, 1014 Lake Ave. of Quinnesec, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at his home. He was born Nov. 9, 1919, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Charles and Anna (Swanson) Walstrom. Mr. Walstrom served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was a welder at Lake Shore Inc. Clarence picked pinecones to collect seeds for nurseries for more than 40 years. He also enjoyed using his metal detector and camping. He married Laverne Corsi on July 13, 1946, in Florence, Wis. Clarence is survived by his wife, Laverne; three sons, Terry (Virginia) of Green Bay, Wis., David of Iron Mountain and Robert (Phyllis) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; four daughters, Patricia (Kevin) Whaley of Iron Mountain, Susan (Gerald) West of Niagara, Wis., Mindi (Carl) Hockberger of Iron River, and Elizabeth (Daniel) Franklin of Quinnesec; one sister, Helen Filliger of Las Vegas; 23 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. | Florence Mining News Carolyn J. Gould FLORENCE, Wis. — On Jan. 1, 2006, Carolyn J. Gould, 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and to be reunited with many loved ones who have gone on before her. Her family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Florence Villa Nursing Center for their part in making the last four years of her life as comfortable and fulfilled as possible through their diligent, compassionate care. Carolyn, first born of Oscar and Jennie Peterson, was born on March 10, 1914. Her sister, Margaret joined the family two years later. In 1921, the Petersons moved to Aurora, Wis., where CarolynÂ’s brother, Bob and sisters, June and Nancy were born. Caring for the needs of her family were always CarolynÂ’s foremost concern, so when she was 19 she moved to Winnetka, Ill., to work and help out the family. While there, she met Frank Gould. They were married May 4, 1937. Their marriage of 61 years resulted in many happy memories including the birth of their three children, Frank, Janice and Marcy. Carolyn served the Lord in many ways. She was a wonderful homemaker, always making sure the needs for her family were met. She was a faithful member of the Winnetka Bible Church and after moving to Kingsford in 1990, she attended the Aurora Free Church and later the Homestead Baptist Church. She also attended weekly services at the Florence Villa. Over the years, her quiet ways of giving and encouraging others touched many lives and she will be greatly missed. She leaves behind many who loved her dearly, including her dear sister, Nancy (Robert) Norris of Aurora, Wis.; a son, Frank (Karen) Gould of Annapolis, Md.; two daughters, Janice Gould of Kingsford and Marcy (Mark) Newell of Aurora; five grandchildren, Lisa (John) Binford, Brian (Ginger) Gould, Stephen (Kathryn) Gould, Dixie (Michael) Youngs and Scott (Jeanette) Newell; 12 great-grandchildren, Lauren, Adam, Christopher, John, Rebecca, Jack, Sarah, Brandon, Kyle, Mark, Benjamin, and Jackson; sister-in-law, Doris (Robert) Schneider of Elgin, Ill.; sister-in-law, Miriam Peterson of Rice Lake, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Homestead Baptist Church, located on Highway N in Homestead, Wis. Services will be held at 11 a.m., officiated by Pastor Bradley Moore. | Florence Mining News LaVerne Anderson AURORA, Wis. — LaVerne L. Anderson, 82, of 1930 Grandview Drive, Aurora, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. LaVerne was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of the late Roy and Gertrude (Basche) Grimord. She was a 1940 graduate of Iron Mountain High School and attended Dundons Business College. She worked for several years at Allis-Chalmers in Milwaukee. LaVerne married Benjamin Anderson on Feb. 14, 1946, at Homestead Baptist Church. She was a homemaker on the family farm in Homestead. From 1965-72, she was employed by the Northeast Wisconsin Community Action Agency. She helped bring several community housing projects to northern Wisconsin. LaVerne was a member of the Homestead Baptist Church where she was involved with the Ladies Aid and later the Women’s Missions. She also served many years as the church treasurer and Sunday School superintendent. She served several years on the Florence County Board of Education. She was kind, often reaching out to help others. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Benjamin; two sons, Ken (Lynda) Anderson of Manitowoc, Wis., and James (Christine) Anderson of Kingsford; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Grimord of Brookfield, Wis.; son-in-law, Vaughn Francar of Hobart, Wis.; grandchildren Scott Francar of Green Bay, Wis., Kevin (Yvonne) Plekan of Appleton, Wis., Neil Plekan of Manitowoc, Joe Supa of East Kingsford, April Supa and Jacob Supa, both of Kingsford; great-grandchildren Daniel, Sara, Stephen, Stella, Sean, Emma, Zachary, Molly and Dennis; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Connie Francar, in 1998, and her brother, Richard Grimord, in 2003. She was born in Milwaukee on Feb. 22, 1928, daughter of the late Benjamin and Catherine (Bradley) Isely. Virginia graduated from South Division High School in Milwaukee. She married Edwin C. Chrisman on June 13, 1946, in Milwaukee and he preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 2004. Virginia worked as a bookkeeper for many years. She was member of American Martyrs Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, working crossword puzzles, bowling and playing golf. Virginia is survived by her son, Ralph (George Chars) Chrisman of Milwaukee; daughters, Georgiann (Robert) Gelhar of Aurora and LeaAnn (Larry) Haralson of Fond du Lac, Wis.; a brother, Richard (Tina) Isely of New Holstein, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Frances Chrisman of Green Bay, Wis. and many nieces and nephews. | Iron Mountain Daily News George Weber AURORA, Wis. — George G. Weber, 82, of Aurora passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. He was born on June 10, 1924, in Aurora. He was the first born of six children to parents John and Gerta (Roos) Weber. George attended grade school at the Golden Rule School in Aurora and graduated from Kingsford High School in 1942. By trade, he was a carpenter starting his career in 1948 at the V.A. Medical Center with Proksch Construction. At the end of that project, he joined Nat Bolognesi House Builders. From there he transferred to Marinette to work with Noah Poquette building schools and the jail. When K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base was first conceived, the prospects of employment looked reassuring, and he renewed a position with Proksch Construction as a foreman and later as a project superintendent. In all, about seven years was spent at Sawyer, then 30 years throughout the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin. He retired on July 1, 1988. Among other endeavors George was so proud of, was being the Aurora town supervisor from 1977-1980 and Aurora town board chairman from 1981-2004. He also served on the Wisconsin Towns Association for 24 years and the Florence Economic Development. George worked very hard to make Aurora a good place to live. His family could not have been more proud of him and his accomplishments. George was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Florence County Lions Club. He had the friendship and respect of many people. Of his hobbies, he enjoyed woodworking the most. George got great joy in making special gifts from wood for his children and grandchildren. George leaves his wife of 63 years Deloris “Dee”; his children, Kay (Jack) Wedin, Mary (Larry Hoya) Raketich, and Rose (Gary Vandeville) Schneider; grandchildren, Kevin (Dawn) Wedin, Kirt (Jennifer) Wedin, Bobbie (Steve) Povolo, Toni (Joe) Scarp, Kevin (Karen) Raketich, Michael (Amy) Raketich, Eric (Michelle) Schneider, and Amanda Holzbauer; a brother, Edward (Betty) Weber; sisters, Margaret (Ron) Olson, Janet (Harry) Lucas, and Doris Brown; a sister-in-law, Gerri Weber; 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Weber. Visitation will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Kingsford Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at 12 noon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aurora. Fr. Michael Betley will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. | Iron Mountain Daily News Daniel Nick SPREAD EAGLE, Wis. — Daniel C. Nick, 51, of 5028 Tall Pines Road in Spread Eagle, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. He was born on Aug. 27, 1955, in Milwaukee, son of the late Frederick and Georgia (Mueller) Nick. Dan graduated from Brookfield Central High School in 1973. While growing up, Dan enjoyed spending summers with his family at their home in Spread Eagle, and has resided there for the past 23 years. He will be missed by all who knew him. Dan is survived by his brother, Frederick (Sam) Nick of Wauwatosa, Wis.; his special life companion, Florence “Cookie” Liddle of Commonwealth, Wis.; nieces and nephews, Frederick, Zachary and Kaitlyn; and many friends. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. A memorial service will follow at 12 noon at the funeral home. Rev. | Iron Mountain Daily News William Veraghen KINGSFORD — William “Jack” Veraghen, 75, of 440 Case St., Kingsford, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s followed by a series of complications. His loving wife and children were at his side. Jack was born on Nov. 19, 1931, in Kingsford, son of the late William Veraghen and Tillie Powell. He lived lived in the area for his entire life. Jack married the former Marie Voris on March 8, 1952, in Kingsford. He worked for the Markell Co. as a roofer for 37 years, retiring in 1987. Jack was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his 4-wheeler “wheelie,” and spending time at his camp in Felch. He was very involved in his grandchildren’s sports and school activities. Jack was a quiet, honest and hard-working man who enjoyed all of the simple pleasures in life; his garden, his dogs, and watching the birds come to his bird feeders. He will be greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, fishing buddies and all those who loved him. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marie; a son, Danny (Jean) Veraghen of Green Bay, Wis.; three daughters, Debbie (John) Ellis of Iron Mountain, Danette (John) Quick of Sagola and Diane Brey (Ken Raska) of Green Bay; a brother, Fred (Cindy) Powell of Iron Mountain; a sister, Vivian “Bebo” Powell of Jonesboro, Ark.; two sisters-in-law, Bessie Simpson of Florence Villa Nursing Home, and Martha Powell of Kingsford; 15 grandchildren, Jamie (Kathi) Ellis, Jeremy Ellis, Kelli (Nick) Vardigan, Staci (Ron) Laakonen, April, Sara, Mikky, Summer and Chad Veraghen, Amy (Jim) Stanchina, Casey and Jenna Faccio, Katie Brey, and Brad and Brianne Hazelwood; a step-grandson, Lincoln Quick; eight great-grandchildren, Hailey and Hanna Ellis, Kayla Laakonen, Damian and Bryce Veraghen, Kamen Cabana, Kali Stanchina, and Kaile Faccio; and several nieces and nephews. | Florence Mining News February 14, 2007 Sydney Rosholt Peterson, 73, of Niagara, died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 11 at Marion General Hospital in Marion, Ohio, with his family by his side. He was born Nov. 19, 1933, in Wausau, the son of the late Raymond G. and Stella A. (Syvertson) Peterson of Wittenberg. On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, 1955, he was united in marriage to Nancy Lou Timm, daughter of the late Edward and Hilda (Schroeder) Timm, in Birnamwood. Sydney is survived by his wife, Nancy; five children, Lucy (Darrell Ortivez) Lopez, Niagara, Jill (Donald) Mongold, Manassas, Va., Timothy Peterson, Crivitz, Cheryl (Kris Schaefer) Peterson, St. Paul, Minn., and Candy (Joe and Mary Milquette Family) Peterson, Crooked Lake. He also leaves four grandchildren, Lisa Lou Lopez (special friend, Joel Bougie) and Caprice Ortivez, both of Milwaukee, Elliott and Regan Mongold, Manassas, Va. In addition he is survived by three sisters, Carol (Willys) Folsom, Wittenberg, Priscilla (Merritt) Wilkins, Spring Valley, Fla., Sylvia Griggs, Bogota, Columbia, South America, along with their children and grandchildren. Sydney graduated from Wittenberg High School in 1952, and served two years in the United States Army stationed at Fort Caron in Colorado Springs, Colo. As a child, Sydney began his life work in the footsteps of his father in the telephone business, at the Wittenberg Telephone Company and subsequently, the Niagara Telephone Company, where he became President, Manager, and Owner. He has been regularly committed to the Wittenberg Telephone Company where he has been President and Owner since 1972. Having never retired, both companies continued to be Sydney's avid livelihood that he enjoyed up to the present day. Sydney was an active person not only in the telecommunications industry but was a member of many organizations, boards, and committees both local and national. These include: Former President of the Niagara Businessmen's Association, Former President of the Niagara TV Coop, Board of Directors for Maryhill Manor, Niagara Lions Club Member, Florence County Business Association, Marinette County Business and Industry Association, Wisconsin State Telephone Association, United States Telephone Association, Board of Directors for Locally-Owned Telephone Association, American Station Wagon Owners Association, and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church committees. Sydney had many interests and hobbies such as traveling and spending time with his family and friends, but one of his most passionate pastimes was polka music. He played accordion and concertina with numerous bands and musicians throughout his life including the Amidon Follies, the Jammers Accordion and Concertina Club of the Wausau area and was a founding member of the North Eastern Wisconsin Concertina, Accordion, and Buttonbox (NEWCABB) club. Sydney also petitioned and testified in Washington DC for various causes he considered important, such as: telecommunications policies, mental health issues, postal rates, and estate taxes. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 15, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford. Funeral Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m. at the church. Rev. Chad Ott will officiate. | Florence Mining News February 14, 2007 Jerry J. Pearson, 60, of Aurora, died Weds. Feb. 7, 2007 at the Beverly Living Center in Florence. He was born on March 22, 1946 in Aurora, the son of the late Holden and Christine (Schneider) Pearson. Jerry served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Jerry was very proud of his service to our country. Jerry had a big heart and was very generous. He loved giving to others. In his younger years he enjoyed woodcarving and clock/watch making. He is survived by his sister Dolly Baiochhi of Wadsworth, Ill., his “adopted family” Tom and Kathi Krans of Aurora, many aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members, and dear friends. | Florence Mining News February 7, 2007 Arlene D. Lenz, 63 of the town of Hull, Marathon County, died peacefully at her home with her family by her side, under the loving care of Ministry Hospice. A memorial service was held Thursday Feb. 1 at Peace Lutheran Church, Edgar. The Rev. Jeff Tarrus officiated. Sarah Lemmer provided music for congregational hymns. Interment of ashes was in the church cemetery. A time of fellowship and luncheon will follow the service. Hansen Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Mrs. Lenz was born Dec. 19, 1943 in Iron Mountain, Michigan, the daughter of Earl and Mary (Whaley) Bush. She attended Florence County schools. The former Arlene Bush was united in holy marriage to Gerald L. Lenz on Jan. 9, 1965 at St John’s Lutheran Church in the town of Wein. Arlene was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. In addition to being a homemaker she enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, reading and gardening. She especially cherished the time she could spend with her grandchildren. Mrs. Lenz was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. Arlene is lovingly survived by her husband, Gerald Lenz, Colby, children, Ronald Lenz, Colby, Deborah Lenz, Abbotsford, Joan (Joseph) Berg, Stetsonville, John (Cynthia) Lenz, Dorchester and Jill Lenz, Colby. Three grandchildren, Kimberly, Lauren and Madyson. Two sisters, Mildred (Joseph) Wiegan, Rib Mountain and Florence Glick of Indiana further survive Arlene. | Iron Mountain Daily News 2/15/2007 Albert Grell FLORENCE, Wis. — Albert A. Grell, 89, of Florence, passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. He was born June 23, 1917, in Florence, son of the late Anthony and Margaret (Gammey) Grell. He married Patricia Richards on June 30, 1941, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Florence. Albert was a lifelong resident of Florence and graduated from Florence High School in 1935. Albert served in the U.S. Army during World War II stationed in the Aleutian Islands and Philippines. Upon being honorably discharged from the service, Albert received numerous medals for valor, including the bronze star with two oak leaf clusters. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Florence, the church building committee, the American Legion Post No. 211 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3635 of Florence, as well as the Knights of Columbus. Albert worked as a logger for Goodman Lumber Co. and Louisiana Pacific, retiring in 1982. He was an avid hunter and trout fisherman and enjoyed spending time outdoors with his wife and grandsons. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; three sons, Robert (LeAnna) Grell of Sun City West, Ariz., Richard (Marie) Grell of Florence, Michael (Lori) Grell of Snohomish, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Lois Grell of Florence; 11 grandchildren, Lori (Troy) Hall, Terri Grell, Robert (Mary) Grell, Anthony (Maureen) Grell, Steve (Stephanie) Grell, Travis (Jennifer) Grell, Tim (Shannon) Grell, Michael Grell, Frank (Amy) Renzoni, Mark (Tina) Renzoni, and Torin Miller; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. James Huffman, he preceded her in death on Nov. 17, 1988. Ginny will be
remembered for her love of music, playing the trumpet, and being an avid

| Florence Mining News February 21, 2007 William J. Person, 82, of 208 Lane Ave. Kingsford, died Friday, Feb. 16 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain. William was born Jan. 20, 1925 in Iron Mountain, son of the late Oscar and Leona (Manley) Person. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1943 and was a lifelong resident of the area. William was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII serving with the 791st squadron of the 467th bomber group and obtaining the rank of sergeant. He was wounded over Lille, France on Aug. 3, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Caterpillar Club because of an emergency parachute jump he made over England from the crippled B-24. William married Dorothy Eckelaert on June 7, 1947 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain. William worked at the Niagara Paper Mill for 39 years, retiring in 1987. William and Dorothy lived on Lake Elwood in Florence for many years until moving to Kingsford three years ago. They enjoyed traveling and spent 15 winters at Feather Rock mobile home park in Valrico, FL. William was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, a 50 year member of the Florence Masonic Lodge, and a life member of the Florence VFW and the Disabled American Veterans in Iron Mountain. He enjoyed spending time with his family and summers at Lake Elwood. William is survived by his wife of 59

Hertig, 46, a Wisconsin State Trooper, Menomonie, formerly of Niagara, passed away on Feb. 13, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital at 10:30 a.m. He was born on Dec. 11, 1960, in Iron Mountain, the son of Donald and Marilyn (Leonard) Hertig. David graduated from Niagara High School in 1979 and from Northwest Technical College with a degree in accounting. David was a dedicated Wisconsin State Trooper for 18 years. He was very proud of his work and knew the importance of it. He worked at Newton on Interstate 43, Highways 441, and 41 while living in Green Bay. He also worked in Marinette and Oconto counties (out of the Wausau District) and lived in Crivitz. He then went to work in the Northwest region of Menomonie and Eau Claire, living in Menomonie. He was a certified state firearms instructor and professional communication skills instructor. He taught the State Troopers and the county and city police officers firearm safety at the state training facility in Tomah. David had a passion for guns and hunting. He enjoyed hunting deer, elk, pheasant, and partridge. He went on many hunting trips to one of his favorite places, the Rocky Mountains. He also enjoyed horseback riding and making saddles. David is survived by his father, Donald Hertig, Niagara; his sisters, Denise (Dan) Duke, Sobieski, and Dani (Mike) Poquette, Iron Mountain; his niece Casey Poquette, and his nephews, Josh Poquette, Aaron, Colin, and Ian Duke; his uncle, Harold (Sharon) Hertig; and many cousins. David was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Hertig, in 2002. Visitation will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Premiere Center in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at the Premiere Center. Rev. David Snyder will officiate and The Wisconsin State Patrol Honors System will have an Honor Guard. February 21, 2007 Albanna D. Sartori, 103, passed away Friday Feb. 16, at Maryhill Manor Nursing Home in Niagara. Albanna was born on Jan. 22, 1904, in Norway, daughter of the late John and Parmelia (Pariseua) Chamberlain. She married Arthur Cardinal, he preceded her in death. Albanna later married Dominic Sartori, and he preceded her in death. She resided all of her life in Niagara. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony Council of Catholic Women, Dart Ball League, where she belonged for many years, along with her sisters and daughter. She especially enjoyed a friendly game of Polish Poker with her sister Elizabeth, unless she lost. Albanna worked many years at the Kimberly Clark Cafeteria and enjoyed visiting with all the people that would come in. She is survived by two sons, Richard Cardinal, Kenneth (Joyce) Cardinal, one daughter, Aileen (Wayne) Lowis, all of Niagara; one brother, George Chamberlain of Auburn Hills, Mich., one sister, Elizabeth Cudnohufsky of Victorian Pines, 19 grandchildren, many great- and great-great-grandchildren and a special goddaughter, LaVerne Quick of Kingsford, Mich. Besides her husbands and parents, Albanna was preceded in death by a son and daughter at birth, five brothers, Harry, Andrew, John, Fred, Joseph; three sisters, Margaret, Marie, Blanche, and one grandson, Darryl Cardinal. Albanna would like the memory of her to be a happy one. She’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. She’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. She’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun of happy memories that she leaves when life is done. Visitation was held Tuesday Feb. 20 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Niagara. St. Anthony Council of Catholic Women offered a memorial service at the church. The Funeral Mass was at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Fr. Michael Betley officiated. Burial was in the Niagara Cemetery. | Florence Mining News February 21, 2007 Doris Mae Kelsey, 84, former resident of Athelstane and Florence, died Friday, Feb. 16 at Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette. She was born March 3, 1922 in Athelstane, the daughter of Elmer and Selma (Lundberg) Hutchens. In May of 1965, she married Rolin Kelsey in Florence where she lived for 30 years before coming to Crivitz in 1996. Doris was employed as a bookkeeper for the DNR for 20 years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Society of the Church and loved music, for both the piano and organ. She is survived by on sister: Alice (Richard) Hanson of Racine, and several nieces and nephews, two stepsons, Duane (Linda) Kelsey, and Alvin (Jeannie) Kelsey, two stepdaughters, Barbara (Mike) Taylor, and Susan (Joe) Gazza, 16 step grandchildren, and 18 step great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers Lyle, Stan, and Bud Hutchens, and her stepdaughter Arlene Phillips. Visitation was held at Messar Funeral Home in Wausaukee on Tuesday, Feb. 20 with funeral services that followed. Rev. Rick Marcy officiated. Burial was in Forest Home Cemetery in Athelstane. |
